26、 If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the features and apps available on smart phones these days and miss the good old days when mobile phones were simple communication tools, you’ll probably love Light Phone 2, a stylish “ dumb phone” designed to remove time-wasting distractions(使人分心的事物) from your life.
The original Light mobile phone could only be used to make and take phone calls, but its creators recently decided that in order to improve its usefulness while still keeping users safe from smart phone distractions, it needed a few extra features. They recently announced Light Phone 2 is just as tiny and stylish as the original ones, but also features text messaging functions and an alarm clock.
Data from company Flurry shows that people in the US spend around five hours a day on their smart phones, while a study from the firm Asurion found that Americans check their phones an average of 80 times per day. Those are some pretty alarming numbers, and to make matters worse, scientists report that too much screen time has a bad effect on our brains, especially those of children.
Light Phone 2 will never replace your Apple phone, but it can at least help you mitigate the effects of smart phone addiction by allowing you to “go light” every once in a while. You can stay in touch with the important people in your life, but you’ll be free from the apps distracting you from the wonders of the colorful world.
But becoming free of smart phone distractions doesn’t come cheap. The Light Phone 2 is expected to be priced at around $400, which is far more expensive than some smart phones. However, a lot of people seem to think the phone and what it promises to do are worth the price, as evidenced by the success of Light’s latest crowd funding(众筹) campaign. With 24 days left until deadline, the company has already raised $360,000, blowing past its $250,000 goal.

27、Ever stopped to consider the upside of volcanic eruptions? It’s not all death, destruction and hot lava — scientists have a plan to cool the planet by simulating one. It would probably work, but it could have disastrous consequences, and there is nothing to stop any country or company from using the technology.
Solar geoengineering involves simulating a spewing volcano by spraying aerosols into the atmosphere. When they combine with oxygen, droplets of sulfuric acid form. These droplets reflect sunlight away from Earth, cooling the planet. All good in theory, but the consequences are largely unknown and a few could be disastrous. In a study recently published in Nature Communications, researchers led by Anthony Jones, a climate scientist from the University of Exeter, found that using this technology in the Northern Hemisphere could reduce the number of tropical cyclones hitting the U.S. and Caribbean but there would be more cyclones in the Southern Hemisphere and a drought across the Sahel region of Africa. That’s because the entire climate system is linked — disrupting one region will inevitably affect another. How would a nation react if another was causing its weather to get much worse? Would that be an act of war?
There is, however, a case for using solar geoengineering on a global scale. Jones says it could be used to reduce the temperature increases scientists are predicting. It could be used while the world searches for more effective strategies.
The study also highlights a far bigger problem with solar geoengineering: its complete lack of regulation. “There’s nothing that could stop one country just doing it,” Jones says. “You only need about 100 aircraft with three flights per day. It would cost $1 billion to $10 billion per year.” He adds, “It’s deeply disconcerting that we have this technology that could have such a massive influence on the climate, yet there’s just no regulation to stop countries or even organizations from doing it.”
Jones cautions that there is much about the climate system we do not understand, as well as far more work that will need to be done before solar geoengineering is considered safe — or too dangerous to even discuss.

28、Paperless office was first coined in 1975.Four decades later, we're still chasing(追逐) the paperless office dream. Take the financial(金融的) industry for example—it is one of the slower industries to hug digital transformation. Many financial institutions today still send out trade confirmations by mail. I can tell you from first-hand experience that going paperless is by no means impossible. The Centric Digital office is a paperless work environment where all the office operations go digital, which has amazed our business partners.
Actually, companies need to stress the benefits of a digital culture for communications. Going paperless can save time and money. You could say goodbye to costly repairs, office supply orders, wasted employee time and so on. Besides, forbidding paper in the office forces information to be 100% digital, where you can make endless amounts of backups(备份), which easily increase transparency(透明). Not to mention, top talents want to work for digital companies.
You might think the secret to a paperless company is purely technology. Well, not really. Thanks to products like iPads, smartphones and cloud services, the ability to go paperless is highly accessible. Yet, even with all this technology, companies continue to rely on paper. It's not because they don't have access to the technology, but because they're lacking the policies, organizational structure and a strong desire to change. In order to go paperless, companies need to change the way they think and operate. The decision needs to be made and carried out and everyone needs to work together to make it.
Yes, the paperless office has been a very long time in the making—but it no longer has to be. With numerous amounts of software, services, apps, and technology available today, the only thing we need to do is make the decision to go paperless and see it through.
【1】The practice of going paperless in the financial industry is________.
A. encouraging B. disappointing
C. satisfying D. disgusting
【2】A paperless company can ________.
A. raise staff salary
B. attract talented staff
C. promote product sales
D. increase time consumption
【3】What actually prevents people from going paperless?

B. Operational research.
C. The company policies.
D. Technological limitations.
【4】The writer believes going paperless ________.
A. still needs a long time preparation
B. offers people a lot more chances
C. should be made to happen right now
D. brings convenience and trouble as well

30、Face shape lets AI spot rare disorders
People with genetic syndromes sometimes have revealing facial features but using them to make a quick and cheap diagnosis can be _______ given there are hundreds of possible conditions they may have. A new neural network that analyses photographs of faces can help doctors _______ the possibilities.
Yaron Gurovich at biotechnology firm FDNA in Boston and his team built neural network to look at the overall impression of faces and _______ a list of the 10 genetic syndromes a person is most likely to have.
They _______ the neural network, called DeepGestalt,on17,000 images correctly labelled to match more than 200 genetic syndromes. The team then asked the Al to _______ potential genetic disorders from a further 502 photos of people with such conditions. It included the correct answer among its list of 10 responses 91 per cent of the time.
Gurovich and his team also _______ the neural network’s ability to distinguish between the different genetic mutations(变异) that can lead to the same syndrome. They used photographs of people with Noonan syndrome, which can result from mutations in any one of five genes. DeepGestalt correctly identified the genetic source of the physical appearance 64 per cent of the time. It’s clearly not _______ but it’s still much better than humans are at trying to do this.
As the system makes its assessments, the facial regions that were most helpful in the determination are _______ and made available for doctors to view. This helps them to understand the relationships between genetic make-up and physical appearance.
The fact that the diagnosis is based on a simple photograph raises questions about_______. If faces can reveal details about genetics, then employers and insurance providers could, in principle, secretly use such techniques to ________ against people who have a high probability of having certain disorders. ________, Gurovich says the tool will only be available for use by clinicians.
This technique could bring________ to those who have genetic syndromes. The real value here is that for some of these ultra-rare diseases, the ________ of diagnosis can be many, many years. This kind of technology can help narrow down the search space and then ________ the diagnosis through checking genetic markers. For some diseases, it will cut down the time to diagnosis dramatically. For others, it could perhaps add means of finding other people with the disease and, ________ help find new treatments or cures.
