二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、There are many famous museums throughout the world where people can enjoy art. Washington D.C. has the National Gallery of Art (美术馆); Paris has the Louvre; London, the British Museum. Florida International University (FIU) in Miami also shows art for people to see. And it does so without a building, or even a wall for its drawings and paintings.

FIU has opened what it says is the first computer art museum in the United States. You don’t have to visit the University to see the art. You just need a computer linked to a telephone.

You can call the telephone number of a University computer and connect your own computer to it. All of the art is stored in the school computer. It is computer art, produced electronically (采用电子手段) by artists in their own computers. In only a few minutes, your computer can receive and copy all the pictures and drawings.

Robert Shostak is director of the new computer museum. He says he started the museum because computer artists had no place to show their work.

A computer artist could only record his pictures electronically and send the records, or floppy discs (软盘), to others to see on their computers. He could also put his pictures on paper. But to print good pictures in paper, the computer artist needed an expensive laser (激光) printer.

Robert Shostak says the electronic museum is mostly for art or computer students at schools and universities. Many of the pictures in the museum are made by students. Mr. Shostak says the FIU museum will make computer art more fun for computer artists because more people can see it. He says artists will enjoy their work much more if they have an audience. And the great number of home computers in America could mean a huge audience for the electronic museum.

    A.floppy discs

    B.a computer and a printer

    C.pictures and drawings on paper

A.Paintings drawn by means of computer.

    B.Different styles of paintings.

C.Drawings done by art students of FIU.

    D.Old paintings

A.Robert Shostak wanted to do something for computer scientists

B.Robert Shostak wanted to help computer artists

C.art students needed a place to show their works

  • 27、Over the centuries the French have lost a number of famous battles with the British. However, they’ve always felt superior in the kitchen. France has for centuries had a reputation for cooking excellence, and Britain for some of the worst cooking in the world. But according to a recent survey, that reputation may no longer reflect reality.

In the survey, 71% of the Britons said they cook at home every day, while only 59% of the French said they cook daily. British home cooks spend more time cooking each week and also produce a greater variety of dishes than French home cooks.

The reaction in London was predictably enthusiastic. British food has greatly improved since the 1990s. Once upon a time, the menu for many family meals would have been roast beef, potatoes and over-cooked vegetables, but not now. Home cooks are experimenting with the huge range of ingredients now available in British supermarkets and are preparing all kinds of new dishes, using the cookbooks that sell millions of copies every year. As a result, there’s much more diversity in British food now, compared to French food, which tends to be very traditional.

Some French people say that the survey did not show the whole picture. They agree that during the week French women don’t cook as much as they used to because most of them work and don’t have much time. They tend to buy ready-made or frozen dishes, but many of them make up for it on the weekend. There’s also a difference between Paris and the countryside. It’s true that people in Paris don’t cook much, but elsewhere, cooking is still at the heart of daily life.

For many French people, opinions about British food have not changed. When Bernard Blier, the food editor at a magazine, was asked about British food, he replied: “I don’t go out of my way to try it. It is not very refined. You can say that I’m not a fan at all.”

【1】According to the passage, nowadays British people ______.

A.cook less at home than the French every day.

B.no longer eat roast beef and over-cooked vegetables.

C.are more willing to try cooking all kinds of new foods.

D.buy more cookbooks than French people do.

【2】What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?

A.French women cook less often now.

    B.The French prefer ready-made dishes.

C.French women seldom cook on the weekend.

D.Cooking is at the heart of people’s life in Paris.

【3】What is Bernard’s attitude towards British food?

A.He would love to try it.

B.He shows no interest in it.

C.He considers it worse than before.

D.He considers it better than before.

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A.The history of British food.

    B.The history of French food.

    C.The change in British food.

    D.The change in French food.

  • 28、   Humans take first place when it comes to making long-term changes to the earth, but we aren’t the only species to make a mark with infrastructure(基础设施).A new look at an 1868 map has shown that beaver dams (河狸坝)in Michigan have been holding strong for at least 150 years.

The map is the work of Lewis Henry Morgan, who first traveled to Michigan in the late 1850s for his railroad work and started studying the beavers in what is now the city of Ishpeming. The resulting book, 1868’s The American Beaver and His Works, had a map that included 64 beaver dams and their ponds (池塘).It was Carol Johnston of South Dakota State University who realized the value in Morgan’s map to modern ecologists (生态学家). She created an updated version using air photos and compared the two, discovering that about 72 percent of the dams and ponds still exist.

While not all of the dams are still in active use, the findings show the unusual engineering abilities of the North American beaver. The fact that so many structures are still standing after all this time is truly impressive; they are even older than many of humankind’s most beloved structures, including the Eiffel Tower. “The findings prove that beaver works have been changing the North American landscape for centuries,” Johnston says.

For more, check out Morgan’s work in full on the Internet Archive, which includes lovely passages like this one, “As the dam is not a necessity to the beaver, his normal living place being rather natural ponds and rivers, and holes in their banks, it is an amazing fact that he should have voluntarily worked himself, by means of dams and ponds of his own construction, from a natural to an artificial way of life.”

On that note, don’t forget that International Beaver Day is April 7. These guys deserve some serious praise.

【1】Which word best describes the beaver dams according to the text?

    A.Huge.

    B.Common.

    C.Simple.

    D.Strong.

【2】What can Morgan’s map be used for?

    A.Helping scientists study environmental changes.

B.Helping railroad builders avoid dangerous areas.

    C.Helping Johnston remap Michigan’s rivers.

D.Helping researchers study how ponds are formed.

    【3】What do Johnston’s findings show?

    A.Beavers are dying out.

    B.Beavers are born engineers.

    C.Beavers are teamwork animals.

    D.Beavers are important to humans.

【4】What does the passage mentioned in paragraph 4 show?

A.Morgan’s joy of figuring out the dams’ function.

B.Morgan’s wish to start International Beaver Day.

C.Morgan’s pride in finding beavers’ natural habitat.

D.Morgan’s surprise at beavers’ willingness to build dams.

  • 29、As the coronavirus (冠状病毒) outbreak continues, many Americans are fearful of using public transportation. They are also looking for ways to get exercise without going to a gym. So, it may not be surprising that the pandemic (流行病) has led to a major increase in bicycle sales.

In the US, bicycles at big stores have sold out. And small bicycle stores cannot keep up with demand for "family-style" bicycles: the low-cost, easy-to-ride models. "The bicycle industry has seen its biggest sales increase since the oil crisis of the 1970s," said Jay Townley, an industry expert. He compared the sale of bicycles to the rush to buy products like toilet paper at the start of the pandemic.

The rise in bicycle sales is not happening just in the US. Italy has created bicycle paths for the growing number of people who want to avoid public transportation. In London, city officials plan to ban cars from some central roads. Bike shop owners in Manila say the demand is even stronger than what they see at big festivals.

Of course, you can only buy a bicycle if you can find one. In the US, the shortage now means it may take many months to get a bicycle. High demand is not the only reason for the shortage. Many bicycle factories were shut down to stop the spread of COVID-19. The increase in demand for bicycles began in March. In April, the sales of bicycles increased by 200 percent in the US.

Joe Minutolo is the co-owner of Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop in Maine. He said he hoped the increased sales meant a change in the way people think about transportation. "People are having a chance to rethink things," he said. "Maybe well all learn something from this, and something really good will happen."

【1】What caused the increase in bicycle sales?

    A.People's fear of natural disaster.

    B.The shortage of public transportation.

    C.People's desire to defeat disease.

    D.The outbreak of the epidemic.

【2】What change has the pandemic caused in Italy?

A.New bicycle paths have been built.

B."Family-style" bicycles are in great need.

C.Cars are banned from some central roads.

D.More bikes are sold than during holidays.

【3】What can we know from Paragraph 4?

A.It's impossible to buy a bike.

B.High demand for bikes began in March.

C.Bike factories were closed in April.

D.It takes many months to produce a bike.

【4】What is Joe Minutolo's attitude towards the increase in bicycle sales?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Uncertain.

    C.Critical.

    D.Positive.

A small robot may help children who are recovering from a long-term illness in the hospital or at home.

These children may feel1from their friends and classmates. The robot takes their place ‘ at school. Through the robot, the children can hear their teachers and friends.

Norwegian researchers have2a clever way to keep children recovering from long-term illness connected to their friends and their education. Now, these children may have a high-tech friend.-a robot.

The robot is called AV1. AV1 goes to school for a child who is3while recovering from a long-term illness. And the child’s school friends must help. They carry the robot between classes and place the robot on the child’s desk.

A Norwegian company called No Isolation created the robot. Karen Dolva was one of the co-founders. She explains how the robot AV1 works. From home, the child uses a tablet’ or phone to start the robot. Then they use the same device to control the robot’s4. At school, the robot becomes the eyes, ears and voice of the child.

The student can take part in classroom5from wherever they are recovering, whether at home or from a hospital bed. The robot is6with speakers, microphones and cameras that make communicating easy.

The robot was designed to be 7. It is water resistant and can take a fall from a desk without damage. Inside AV1, there is a small computer connected to a 4G network A small camera8up to a small computer could do the job. But that would not be the same.

AV1 is large and looks like a human for a reason. Dolva says this is important because the robot is9to be a friend to the children. And robots are, quite simply, cool. The robot just became10to the public. Hopefully AV1 will help some children feel less lonely while they are absent from class.
