  • 27、Imagine looking for your lost dog. You step into a cave(洞穴). But instead of the dog, you find beautiful cave paintings. You see paintings of horses, deer, and bison that are drawn in black, brown, red and yellow. Your first question would probably be "Who did this?"

This is what happened to four French boys in 1940. They found the Lascaux caves. The paintings the boys discovered in those caves are 17,000 years old. They were drawn by the ancient people called Cro-Magnons.

Cro-Magnons looked much like people of today. They used tools, such as fishing nets. But their art was extremely good. The main cave at Lascaux is called the Great Hall of Bulls, which has a picture of bulls and horses in many colors. The largest animal is 18 feet long. There are smaller animals, such as bison, stags(雄鹿) and a bear. There is also a strange spotted two-horned (两只角的) animal.

To the left of the main cave are the most famous paintings that are the drawings of multicolored animals. One painting is called Little Horses. On the ceiling are horses and cows. The most unusual sight may be in the Shaft of the Dead Man where there is a thinoceros (犀牛), a carefully drawn dead man, a wounded bison and a bird.

Why did Cro-Magnon artists do these beautiful drawings on cave walls? Did the drawings call upon some magical power? Did the Cro-Magnon people hope that the drawings would bring good luck? There is one thing the paintings seem to tell us. The Cro- Magnons were interested in the world. They looked at beauty and they understood it.

【1】The author uses the word "you" in the first paragraph to _____.

    C. give the reader good directions to find the caves

    D. compare present-day readers with the Cro-Magnon people

【2】Most of the drawings in the caves are about _____.

    A. boys   B. tools C. dead men   D. animals

    C. The Lascanx caves hold ancient colorful paintings.

    D. Drawings of horses are on the walls of the Lascaux caves.

  • 28、   After finishing my teaching for a school year, I thought that I should go back to Montreal, Quebec, my hometown for a visit. My main goal was to relax in preparation for the challenges of my retirement in the coming year.

Through my stay in Montreal, I met lots of Chinese who were struggling to succeed and then led a better life in Canada.

Some travelled thousands of miles to get knowledge. When I spoke with some of them about the major barrier they had to face after they arrived in Canada, they all talked about the two official languages of Canada. But I was impressed by their ability to express their ideas while they switched between English and French.

Almost all of those people said they often felt homesick. They missed their families and friends. Though Montreal had lots of Chinese restaurants, they longed for a home-cooked meal.

I met some tourists who were trying to realize their childhood dreams of experiencing the life in a developed country. When I asked them if Montreal had lived up to their expectations, they hesitated. They said that reality never agrees with fantasies. However, they were glad to have the opportunity to visit Montreal and didn’t regret taking the trip.

Not all the Chinese people I met were happy. I once met a young lady who met a gentleman through the Internet. However, to her disappointment, he disappeared after he promised to marry her in Montreal.

I was served by another Chinese person who could not handle the challenges of studying in an English environment and ended up working in a restaurant with minimum pay.

Exploring different parts of the world, without any doubt, is an amazing experience. However, one should be realistic when it comes to leaving his hometown to set up a new life in a foreign country. One should take the time to examine the advantages and the shortcomings of the venture before they decide to chase an uncertain dream of achieving success or leading a better life.

1The writer went to his hometown to   .

A.meet his old friends B.prepare for his retirement life

C.go on with his teaching D.study a new language

2The main barrier for some Chinese to get knowledge in Canada is   .

    A.food B.homesickness

    C.income D.language

3What is the author’s attitude towards one’s chasing dreams abroad?

    A.worried B.cautious

    C.neutral D.positive

4What is the best title for the passage?

A.Struggling for a Better Life in Canada.

    B.Exploring Different Parts of Canada.

    C.Improving Life Skills in Canada.

    D.Going to CanadaYour Ideal Destination.

  • 29、Have you ever thought of taking a train and having an adventure(奇遇)? Riding the train can be a real adventure. That is how I feel every time I take Amtrak. I often take a four—hour trip to visit my children. Every time I take this trip I never know what will happen.

Last week when I was on the train and over an hour into the train ride, there was a man sitting by himself in the back of the train carrying on a mobile phone conversation—in another language. It was loud and disturbed most of the people on the train. I think it was annoying.

Fortunately I sat next to a wonderful old lady who was taking a two-day trip by train. She said her two daughters were distraught at the thought of her driving for three days to reach her home, although she had no trouble driving. The train ride was the only choice for her. She loved to look out of the window and watch the world go by on the train.

She was fun to talk to and asked me when my children started being parents. That is a very good question. Both of us are old and have children. She asked that same question from time to time.

There are always many people on the train from all walks of life, different countries, and many languages. Riding the train is a great way to increase your knowledge and take in all kinds of cultures. If you get hungry, you can buy food in the food car at any time. If you need to use the restroom there is always one available.

It sure beats driving the car, which has to stop for food and restrooms. And it is better than taking the bus.

【1】According to the passage, the purpose of the author’s train ride was__________.

    A.to do business

    B.to see her children

    C.to visit places of interest

    D.to see her old friends

【2】Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word

    “distraught” in Paragraph 3?

    A.Disappointed.

    B.Satisfied.

    C.Concerned.

    D.Pleased

【3】In the author’s opinion, on the train Amtrak__________.

    A.the services are quite good

    B.the food is terribly expensive

    C.all the passengers are polite

    D.all the passengers are American

【4】What is the best title for this passage?

    A.Train ride—a real adventure

B.A painful experience on the train

    C.The history of Amtrak

    D.A wonderful lady
