二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Science fiction is probably the only type in which anything can happen. From cities in space to robots taking over the earth, the future is never a dull place in sci-fi novels or movies. However, the task of this popular type is not only to predict the future, but also to reflect real life.

Just take a look at The Stone Sky, written by US author N. K. Jemisin, which won the Nebula Award for Best Novel of 2017. One of the reasons why the book was recognized was that it matches up with reality and shows modern social mentality. The Stone Sky tells a story happening on a broken earth, which often suffers natural disasters. In the novel, the earth “is not simply damaged, it is broken: its current condition was actively inflicted (强加) upon through the foolishness of humankind”, sci-fi blog Skulls in the Stars noted.

Faced with the earth’s constant changes, the characters in the book react in many different ways. Essun and her daughter Nassun both try to save the planet. Essun wants to repair the broken world, but Nassun desires to wreck it and create a new one. This difference casts light on the cultural anxieties in the real world, in which rebellious (叛逆的) young people want to break rules and traditions, while the elders try to keep them, the New York Times commented.

Generational idea aside, the book also includes real-life race issues and even adds some sarcasm (讽刺) to them. In the story, the dark-skinned people from the hot regions of the earth are regarded as the advanced race, while the paler people from the Antarctic are viewed as inferior (较差的). Yet the unconditional love between Essun and Nassun brings warmth to readers’ hearts. As Jemisin notes at the end of The Stone Sky, “Where there is pain in this book, it is real pain; where there is anger, it is real anger; where there is love, it is real love.”

1Why is science fiction special according to the first paragraph?

    A.It reflects our real life.

    B.It excites people easily.

    C.Anything can happen in it.

D.People often suffer a lot in it.

2The underlined word “wreck” in Paragraph 3 probably means “   ___”.

    A.abandon B.ruin C.change D.improve

3How do the characters in The Stone Sky react to the constant changes of the earth?

A.The younger wants to build a completely new world.

B.Most of them would like to get along well with nature.

C.The older waits hopefully for the earth to improve itself.

D.Few of them think it possible to save the earth from its fate.

4What makes The Stone Sky stand out from other sci-fi novels?

A.Its prediction of the future world.

    B.Its description of unconditional love.

C.Its reflection of reality and social problems.

D.Its explanation of the foolishness of humankind.

  • 27、   Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said, “The British are the only people who like to be told how bad things are.” This is definitely true of British comedy. Most people think humor is about happy things, but for the British, the opposite is true. We love to use our sense of humor to complain and be negative.

British comedy, for example, draws a fine line between comedy and tragedy. BBC’s The Office is a TV showfamous for its dry humor. The main character, David Brent, is a foolish man, and the show's comedy comes from his delusions. For example, he often tells himself that he is loved by everyone but the viewer can see that everyone hates him.

Stupid characters for the audience to laugh at are an old tradition in Britain. In Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night, the character Malvolio is an old man whom people play tricks on. The audience will laugh away, although the reality is that this man is a truly tragic individual.

This side of British humor is reflected in friendships as well. At university, my friends and I would always laugh at one another. I had an American friend who actually found this sarcasm(挖苦)quite upsetting. She didn't realize that in Britain, the better friends you are with someone, the more you laugh at them. This approach—laughing at everything—may sound rather depressing, but our strange humor played a big part in British history. In the second World War, along with a stiff upper lip,  the British got through it by laughing. What else was there to do?

There is a saying in English: “Laugh and the world laughs with you; cry and you cry alone.”  If you are ever on the receiving end of British sarcasm, you may feel like crying, but it's best to just laugh it off!

1How is British comedy different from other types?

    A. It is often surprising and boring   .

    B. It often laughs at human nature.

    C. It is often about the bad things in life   .

    D. It often makes people feel depressed.

2What does the underlined word “delusion” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A. strong abilities B. fun characters

    C. wrong beliefs D. deep doubt

3Why is Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night mentioned in the article?

    A. To show one of the best examples of British comedy.

    B. To explain how Shakespeare's comedy is different from others'.

    C. To show how difficult it is to make people accept British comedy.

    D. To prove Britain has a long tradition of laughing at stupid characters.

4How does the author advise people to react to British sarcasm?

    A. Learn from it. B. Don't take it seriously.

    C. Forget about the upsetting things. D. Be careful not to make stupid mistakes.

  • 28、When I graduated from high school, I wanted to major in comparative literature. But, once I found out my friends were going into “real” majors, like marketing, nursing, and engineering, I figured I needed to do the same to ensure a good career. So I changed my mind and chose Business Management as my major. I forced myself to believe that I would enjoy it and succeed in the future, but eventually I exhausted myself understanding the economy and trying new marketing techniques. Coming out of this experience, I realize it is ok to be different from others and to study things like classcs, art history and other majors offered in the College of Humanities(人文学科)!

The   worries   most   people   have   about   a   Humanitie degree   and   finding   a   career afterwards are that the majors are too abstract, and one will not obtain any applicable skills. Actually ideas discussed in Humanities classes, which are occasionally different from what people commonly believe, offer a broad perspective(视角). How could one effectively be an unbiased(无偏见的)writer with only a knowledge of the popular opinion of society? How could one speak persuasively ith closed minds? Only seeing the world through a single perspective leads to missed learning, missed friendships, and missed growth! With a broader perspective, we wl be more free, more open-minded, and less limited in what we can become!

STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) graduates learn actual skills in their studie, while humanities majors learn “soft skills” like communicating effectively through writing critically and speaking persuasively, synthesizing(综合)ideas through gathering and interpreting information, and developing cultural awareness. Do those soft skills sound useless and inapplicable to you? Think of it. How often do you communicate with others? Produce ideas? Encounter people from other cultures? Every day. Every SECOND of every day. So why not master these skills?

If you choose a major in the College of Humanities, you will be needed. The job market is quietly creating thousands of openings a week for people who can bring a humanist’s grace to our rapidly evolving high-tech future. Your skills will be valuable to any workplace you hope to be in. Chase after your dream major with all your energy, no matter what other people think.

【1】Why did the author choose Business Management as his major at first?

A.He was tired of learning comparative literature.

B.He came to enjoy learning marketing techniques.

C.He wanted to go to the same university as his friends.

D.He believed Business Management was more practical.

【2】According to the author, what is a possible way to gain a broad perspective?

A.Making more friends and learning from them.

B.Exchanging ideas in a philosophy seminar.

C.Opening your mind to future possibilities.

D.Getting to know the popular opinion of society.

【3】In which of the following situations do soft skills play the most important role?

    A.Writing a software program.

    B.Performing a heart operation.

    C.Playing a musical instrument.

    D.Negotiating with a business partner.

【4】The author believes the job market for Humanities graduates is .

    A.recovering

    B.depressing

    C.promising

    D.challenging

【5】What could be the best title for the passage?

    A.Stick to Your Desired major

    B.Broaden Your Perspective

    C.How to Acquire Soft Skills

    D.Humanities vs. STEM

Smell the flowers before you go to sleep and you may just end up with rosy dreams. Have a whiff of rotten(腐烂的)eggs during the night and your dreams may be1(pleasant). So says researcher Dr. Boris Stuck, 2invited sleeping volunteers to a rose vs. rotten egg test in the University Hospital Mannheim in Germany. The subjects didn’t dream about roses3eggs, but rather he found that what they smelt affected the emotions of4(they) dreams.

And if you think5(smell) have a say in dreams, wait for what TV tells us. A UK study reveals that people exposed6black-and-white film and TV in their youth are to have monochromic(单色的)dreams throughout their life more7(probable). Eva Murzyn from the University of Dundee tested two age groups— one half 8(age) over 55 and9other half under 25.

The result? Under 5% of the dreams of the under-25s were in black and white. 10(watch)color TV in childhood seems to be the reason why.

The Internet E-commerce and globalization are making a new economic age possible. In the future, capitalist markets will largely be replaced by a new kind of economic system based on 1 relationships, contractual arrangements and access rights.

Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? I have asked this question of hundreds of CEOs and corporate executives in Europe and the United States. Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 2.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 3 supporting.

The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 4 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 5.

If an earlier generation was preoccupied with the quest to enclose a vast 6 land, the .com generation, it seems, is more caught up in the colonization of time. Every spare moment of our time is being filled with some form of commercial connection, making time itself the 7 of all resources.

And while we have created every kind of labor-and time-saving device to service our needs, we are beginning to feel like we have less time available to us than any other humans in history. Maybe we need to ask what kinds of connections really 8 in the e-economy age. If this new technology 9 is only about super efficiency, then we risk losing something even precious than time-our sense of what it means to be a(n) 10 human being.

  • 41、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I sat in the breakfast corner with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. I was still recovering from a surgery. I hoped for strength and happiness. But the future seemed so hopeless , I’d always wanted five or six kids. Three surgeries later, that dream would never come true.

Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to the sliding door. Sure enough, there was a white dove (鸽子)seated on a rubber tree. It sat there a few moments, and then flew away. I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.

When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying twigs(嫩枝).”Look, Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They're going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on the top of the rubber tree. Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he'd run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. As much as I was grieving(感到悲伤),I couldn't help but look forward to the doves’   visits too. We watched their progress as if it were a real-life soap opera unfolding before us. I’d do the cooking and for a moment, my pain disappeared, replaced by joy.

Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree's broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew through, throwing the doves' nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn't blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch(从头开始), though the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.
