21、If you put a buzzard(秃鹰) in a pen(围栏) six to eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be a prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten to twelve feet. Without space to run, it will not even attempt to fly, but remain a prisoner for life in a small prison with no top.
The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkably nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is to shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight height from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.
A bumblebee (大黄蜂), if dropped into an open tumbler(平底玻璃杯), will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but insists on trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists until it completely destroys itself.
In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat and the bumblebee. They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations, not realizing that the answer is right there above them.
【1】Why does a buzzard choose to stay in a pen?
A. Because it is safe to live there.
B. Because it gets used to living there.
C. Because it cannot take off within an limited area.
D. Because it lost its ability to fly.
【2】 The underlined word in the second paragraph probably means “ .”
A. to run slowly B. to move slowly
C. to pace slowly D. to fly slowly
【3】A bumblebee will completely destroy itself for .
A. it does not look for a way out above
B. it is dropped into an open cage
C. it does not try to find a way to escape
D. it hurts itself while flying
【4】 In which way are many people similar to a buzzard, an ordinary bat and a bumblebee?
A. They are overcoming all their problems and frustrations.
B. They are all content with the things as they are.
C. They choose to give in to problems and frustrations.
D. They do not seek new ways to deal with difficulties.
22、 Genghis Khan remains to this day one of the most accomplished men. But there are no accounts of the events that surrounded his death and burial — only a mystery focused around an area known as the Forbidden Zone.
Scientist Albert Lin was obsessed by the story of Genghis Khan. He decided to organize a tomb hunt. Some of his best friends were experts in various fields — UAV3 design, remote sensing, and geographic information systems — that could, if applied in combination, provide an old-fashioned archeological expedition with cutting-edge advantages. Not only that, but almost all of these friends were enthusiastic rock climbers used to camping in the wilderness, ready for any adventure.
In July 2008, Lin and his team found themselves driving north from Ulaanbaatar. On maps, it looked like their initial destination- the Forbidden Zone- was about six hours away. But then came the mechanical breakdowns and deep mud pits, the injured goats and stuck vehicles, and the stubborn guards at the entrance to the Forbidden Zone. After two days, they established their first base camp and began exploring.
For the next three weeks, they explored the entire Forbidden Zone and beyond, spreading out across the wilderness on foot and on horseback. They faced challenges such as wolves, exploding UAVS and unexploded bombs buried in the earth. They ate goat steak, goat stew, and something called goat bread, and they drank fermented horse milk.
At first, they experienced much disappointment. A few days later, they arrived at the location of an ancient temple that had never previously been studied. Although they didn’t do any digging, by simply scanning the earth near recently fallen trees, they found plenty of impressive artifacts, among them a clay medallion with the face of a lion on it dating from the Khan's time.
The team identified dozens of potential burial sites. Rather than digging, however, Lin’s approach is to scan the earth below using imaging technology. This is because of Genghis Khan’s importance for the Mongolian people. Not only considered by many to have been the greatest military leader of all time, Genghis Khan also has great religious significance for many Mongolians.
Some believers even worry that digging up his tomb could cause the end of the world.
“Using traditional archeological methods would be disrespectful to believers,” Lin says. “The ability to explore in a noninvasive way lets us try to solve this ancient secret without overstepping cultural barriers.” Lin also believes the search for Genghis Khan’s tomb has importance. “By locating his tomb, we hope to emphasize how important it is for the world to protect such cultural heritage treasures.”
【1】What advantage did Albert Lin’s expedition team has?
A.It showed great interest in finding the tomb.
B.It consisted of experts from a variety of fields.
C.It was the only team to use modern technology.
D.It had previous experience working in the wild.
【2】What can we infer from the third and fourth paragraph?
A.The explorers got used to the lifestyles of the local people.
B.However challenging the work was, they had enough food.
C.The expedition conditions were unfamiliar and challenging.
D.The scientists gained respect from the guards with hard work.
【3】Why didn’t Albert Lin dig up any artifacts they found?
A.Digging was likely to destroy the artifacts.
B.The team had achieved their original purpose.
C.It showed no respect and would cause offence.
D.The artifacts were located in an ancient temple.
【4】Which of the following can best describe Scientist Albert Lin?

23、 It is 4:45 am in Samasati village in north-western Zambia and the Chimwanga family, champion beekeepers of the village, are already on their way to collect honey from one of their many hives(蜂房). Samasati has been famous for beekeeping but it is only in the last ten years that the business has begun to make a difference to the lives of the producers, since they began to trade through an organization guaranteeing them a fair price for their crop.
Samasati is a beautiful place, where nature provides and pollution is non-existent. Here, 61 miles from the nearest telephone or source of electricity, the 322 inhabitants support themselves from the forest and rivers and the only income available to the villagers is from selling their honey.
It is a half-hour walk from the Chimwangas’ house to the hive. On reaching the site, the Chimwangas tear off low, leaf-covered branches from nearby trees. They place these in a pile on the ground as a bundle(捆)and put some dry plants in the middle. A match then sets the plants alight and thick smoke is produced as the fire spreads from the dry plants to the green leaves.
Mr. Chimwanga climbs quickly up the tree trunk and moves carefully along a branch towards the hanging hive, carrying the smoking bundle with him. When he reaches the hive, he waves smoke into the entrance to calm the bees. The bees circle his head continuously. Unafraid, he pulls up a bucket and fills it with the precious delicious honey, fragrant but not too sweet ‒ the result of hundreds of wild flowers the bees have enjoyed in the forest.
This honey is sold straight to the exporting company, North West Bee Products, through Bon Malichi. He is the vital middleman for the beekeepers. Bob believes the honey is Zambia’s future. “Our honey is produced without adding anything.” he says. The honey is transported to Dares Salaam, in neighbouring country Tanzania, for export. Within a month of a Zambian beekeeper climbing to his hive, his honey can be spread on bread anywhere in the world.

A.get light and see the hives clearly
B.scare away the bees by thick smoke
C.produce smoke to protect him from the bees
D.keep warm by the burning plants
【3】Why does Bob believe the honey is Zambia’s future?
A.It is popular for its superior quality.
B.It has a large quantity of production.
C.He can guarantee a fair price for it.
D.He can help export it to neighboring countries.
【4】What can we learn about Samasati from the text?
A.It enjoys beautiful nature and less pollution.
B.It has an abundant supply of electricity.
C.It is well known for processing honey.
D.It is a small, poor and backward village.
24、Lately, I’ve been traveling around the world. No longer am I waking up far away from my home, tired from a late night of writing down the stories I collected the day before. Things are different now, and each day my travels begin like this: I sit down at my dining table, usually early in the morning or late at night when nobody else is awake, and I listen to the radio.
The radio station is always from somewhere that isn’t here in New York, and most often it comes from a free-to-use website called Radio Garden. Move your mouse and maybe you will land in Bujumbura, Burundi; in Dibrugarh, India; or on the edge of the South Pacific. Seemingly no matter how large or small the broadcaster is, if it sends out a signal online, it can appear on the site and you can listen to it.
During the pandemic, Radio Garden, which is now available as an app, at times attracted as many as 15 million monthly listeners. “We received many heartwarming emails from people stuck at home expressing their gratitude for the service,” said Jonathan Puckey, the site’s founder.
Radio Garden began as a project of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, where designers and computer programmers overlaid (覆盖) station streams with their geographical locations on a 3-D map of the world. As a result, there is more than one way to transmit. Visiting a country like Colombia brought back memories of past trips - - romantic accordion music reminding me of bus rides on the rural roads.
Where will you visit first on the Radio Garden globe? For me, thrilling as it is to drop in on Ouagadougou or Ulaanbaatar or the Azores, it’s all about personal history: I was born and raised in New York, but my family is from everywhere—Latin America, the Middle East, and places in between. My ancestors were merchants who traded in goods and cultures. Now, because of their wanderings, pieces of six languages still fly across our dinner tables. Thanks to Radio Garden, my family can cross planes of space and time without worry!
