二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Often in Scotland it can feel like the only difference between summer and the rest of the year is that it doesn’t snow. (This isn’t a guarantee!) But when the weather is good, it’s a truly special place-here are some things you can do in summer when the weather is nice.

    See

With the richest wildlife across the UK, take the chance to see some of the less common sites. On the West coast of Scotland there are lots of places where you can take a boat trip to see many kinds of whales. If you prefer dolphins, you can see the most northerly colony of bottlenose dolphins (海豚) in the world just off Inverness in the Moray Firth. Of course it’s likely that you’ll see seals (海豹) and many other animals on these trips too.

    Do

The waves of Thurso right in the north of Scotland are just great. If you’re not feeling brave enough to go in the water and prefer to watch from the safety of the shore then there’re several major surf contests held there.

Another very Scottish activity ideal for good weather is “Munro Bagging”. Named after Sir Hugh Munro, the 218 mountains in Scotland over 914m high are called Munros and walkers try to see how many they can climb in a set amount of time. This is not easy though — conditions can change suddenly and many of the routes are very tough (艰难的).

    Eat

Thanks to a large Scottish-Italian population, there are far too many specialist ice cream sellers. One of the most famous of them is Nardini in Largs, Ayrshire. Not only can you watch people actually make ice cream but you can sit and eat in a beautiful refurbished (翻新的) 1930s building facing the river Clyde. There’s even a piano player at the weekends.

【1】What are you recommended to see in Scotland during summer?

    A.A former colony.

    B.A variety of boats.

    C.Beautiful snow scenery.

    D.Animals living in the wild.

【2】What do we know about Munro Bagging?

    A.It is very interesting.

B.It suits people of all ages.

    C.It is a challenging activity.

D.It was named after a mountain.

【3】What can you do in Nardini?

    A.Watch surf contests.

    B.Enjoy great ice cream.

    C.Learn to play the piano.

    D.Make ice cream by yourself.

  • 22、You don’t need to be a world-class mountaineer to stand out in a job interview. Here’s my advice on how to nail the most common interview question.

Most people are so eager to show off what they’ve been involved in. Don’t worry, and there will be time for that. The interviewer has reviewed your resume and will ask you plenty about your expertise. “Tell me about yourself” is a question you’re certain to be asked at any job interview. 【1】However, sharing something that shows who you really are beyond a piece of paper is a good idea. It will allow the interviewer to know something about your life outside of work.

Everyone has something interesting to share about themselves. I’ve heard people talk about everything from being a world-class sushi chef to an ice carver.【2】Such as you participate in competitive sports, you’re an accomplished(技艺高超的)pianist and you’re writing your first detective novel. If the information showcases a unique aspect of yourself, and especially if you can link it to what you can bring to your next job, then go for it.

Another way to think about the question is: “What gets you up every morning?” The person also wants to know what your sense of passion and purpose is. That volunteer work on a farm cooperative in South America, for example, shows you have a global perspective. 【3】 It doesn’t matter how big or small the accomplishment is, as long as it shows you’re struggling to improve yourself. When people are motivated by contributing to something bigger than themselves, they get more satisfaction.

【4】Relax, be yourself and tell the truth. Don’t approach the interview like you’re trying out for Broadway. It’s more than obvious when someone is trying to memorize their lines and “play the part”. Also, if you overstate what you’ve done or fully invent a story about yourself, you’ll be exposed. 【5】

A.It’s also important to tell it in a way that makes you memorable.

B.And then everything you say about yourself will be questioned.

C.Take a risk to get personal.

D.Showing honesty is one of the most important things.

E.“Tell me about yourself” is an invitation for you to share brief information.

F.Running your first 10 kilometers shows you like a challenge.

G.Too many people respond to it by giving a recital of their resume.

  • 23、Some Chinese students born in the 1990’s created a microsatellite that took a stunning picture of the moon and the Earth in space, an image praised as one of the best of the two celestial bodies and one that Science magazine also used on Feb.15, 2019.

The photograph was done by the camera on Longjiang 2, a microsatellite developed by students at the Harbin Institute of Technology in Northeast China's Heilongjiang province.

Before its publication in the leading scientific journal, the picture had been widely circulated on mainstream media worldwide, with some foreign media outlets even praising it as one of the best photos of the moon and the earth so far.

Wei Mingchuan, born in 1991, was the chief designer responsible for the sub-system of Longjiang 2, a microsatellite launched last year together with Queqiao, the relay satellite for the Chang'e 4 lunar probe. Wei successfully developed LilacSat 1 -- the country's first microsatellite independently designed, developed and controlled by students -- and has been dubbed China's "youngest chief designer", despite being the oldest in his team.

Tai Mier, one of Wei's team members who was born in 1996, designed the camera on Longjiang 2 that captured the amazing picture of the moon and the Earth. Tai was only 20 years old when work on the project began.

The youngest member in the team is 20-year-old Huang Jiahe, who handled software design for the Longjiang 2 ground station. Beginning in primary school, Huang would buy all kinds of electronic components and parts. At first, he just simply disassembled and assembled the parts, but now he can design and create things. This young man, considered a genius by some, said that he is just curious and passionate about aerospace technology.

In their dormitory, aerospace-related items are everywhere. A postcard on the wall is printed with the words "we were born for our dreams", a reminder that the future has just begun for this youngest team of the Chang'e 4 mission.

  • 24、Schoolchildren across the United Kingdom will learn how to fend off loneliness. In January, British Prime Minister Theresa May appointed the first “minister of loneliness”. This week, her administration released an 84-page plan detailing the actions it will take to prevent loneliness. Starting in primary school, students will have lessons in “relationships education”.

The Brigham Young University psychologist Julianne Holt-Lunstad, one of the foremost scholars on loneliness in the United States, warns that the U.S.has a significant loneliness problem of its own and that schools desperately need to follow the U.K.’s lead and include preventive measures into their lessons.

Indeed, according to a recent report by the health-care company Cigna, nearly half of adults in the U.S. reported feeling alone. Marriage rates and religious-participation rates are also dropping and both are risk factors for social isolation and loneliness. The prevalence (普遍) of loneliness seems to be especially acute among young adults. One study found that Americans aged 21 to 30 reported feeling lonely twice as many days as adults aged 50 to 70. Studies suggest loneliness results in a variety of health issues, such as decreased immunity to viral infections, poor sleep, and cardiovascular (心血管的) issues.

The ideal school curriculum (课程) for teaching loneliness prevention would target social isolation as well as the cognitive processes that make people feel lonely. “Recognizing that it’s something that we need to take seriously for our health is a primary and critical step,” Holt- Lunstad says. She advocates for a sort of “social education” that would be put into existing health-education curriculum to teach students how to build and maintain friendships and relationships.

【1】How does Holt-Lunstad find the loneliness problem in the United States?

A.It is not serious and easy to deal with.

B.It is serious and needs measures to control.

C.It is not as serious as in the United Kingdom.

D.It is more serious than it is in the United Kingdom.

【2】What does the underlined word “acute” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Popular.

    B.Average.

    C.Severe.

    D.Frequent.

    【3】What result may loneliness cause?

    A.Poor sleep.

    B.Higher religious-participation rates.

    C.Lower marriage rates.

    D.Increased immunity to viral infections.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Finding the Cause of Loneliness.

B.Learning to Fight Loneliness at School.

C.Loneliness — the Cause of Many Health Problems.

D.Loneliness — a Serious Problem in Modern Society.
