  • 21、Practicing gratitude can increase feelings of happiness and life satisfaction while decreasing depressive symptoms. 【1】 To start improving your gratitude skill, try the following gratitude challenges.

Reflect on the gifts of hardship. There is no question that life can be challenging, as things don’t always turn out the way we’d hoped.【2】 It may seem difficult to reflect on challenging times and find a reason to be grateful, but in making our pain purposeful, we can find meaning in the experience.

Express gratitude to others in writing.【3】 Send each of them a quick but considerate correspondence in the form of a handwritten note, email or even a thoughtfully composed text. Remind them of why they are special to you and how worthwhile they are in the world. As a result of your effort, those on the receiving end will experience the mood-boosting benefits of being appreciated. They won’t be the only beneficiaries. Writing letters of gratitude has a positive effect on the author, increasing feelings of happiness while decreasing depression, studies have shown.

【4】 An important aspect of practicing gratitude regularly is becoming aware of opportunities throughout your day to express gratitude. Acknowledge at least two times a day that someone spreads a small act of kindness toward you. These acts could be a delivery person bringing a package to your door, a coworker offering assistance at work or your significant other getting you a coffee.【5】

When you finish the challenges, hopefully you’ll be inspired by the mood-boosting benefits and continue actively practicing gratitude on a daily basis.

A.Catch the chances of acting kindness.

B.Notice and appreciate the small stuff.

C.Think of three people in your life that you truly appreciate.

D.All of us experience dilemma at different points in our lives.

E.The benefits of thankfulness extend to both the giver and receiver.

F.Gratitude takes practice to realize its full potential, just like any other skill.

G.Once recognizing their efforts, you can consistently show your appreciation better.

  • 22、Humans may not have landed on Mars (火星) just yet, but that isnt stopping a European company from devising a plan to send four people to the Red Planet within the next few years. This project, called Mars One, aims to send a small group of people to Mars in 2022 and eventually establish a permanent colony on the planet.

“Everything we need to go to Mars exists,” said Mars One co-founder Bas Lansdorp in March 2014. “We have the rockets to send people to Mars, the equipment to land on Mars, the robots to prepare the settlement for humans. For a one-way mission, all the technology exists.” Yet the four astronauts chosen for the trip will be stuck on Mars—forever. And despite Mars Ones thorough planning, there are a number of challenges that may prevent the mission from ever taking place. The biggest road block could be the mission's huge cost ($6 billion). However, Lansdorp is confident that Mars One will be able to fund the project by selling the broadcast rights for the mission and subsequent experiences living on the planet.

Those broadcast rights will also play a part in helping to select the people who will be sent to Mars. Lansdorp said the company will hold a selection process similar to a reality show. Lansdorp is expecting at least 1 million applications from people around the world. In addition to the cost, several other potential problems could inhibit (阻止) the mission to Mars.

“Its even more challenging to send people there with life support, with food, with air, with all the other things like books, entertainment, means of communication and of providing for their own resources for a long stay on Mars,” said Adam Baker, senior lecturer in space engineering at Kingston University in London. “The size of the rockets youd need to do this would be absolutely colossal.

【1】According to Project Mars One, humans could send four people to Mars within the next ________years.

    A.seven   B.eight   C.ten D.six

【2】According to Bas Lansdorp, which of the following is NOT TRUE?

A.Robots are prepared for the settlement for humans.

B.He could not come up with the fund for Mars One.

C.We humans have the rockets to send people to Mars.

  • 23、If you’re gathering your teenage kids in the living room to watch “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” on Disney+, just know there’s a good chance they’d rather be playing “Fortnite”, a popular game.

That could totally be the case according to a new study from a consulting firm in Deloitte, which analyzed the generational divide in at-home entertainment.

The study, based on an online survey of more than 2,000 consumers, showed preferences are changing rapidly between millennials and the younger generation when it comes to how they want to spend their leisure time.

For Gen Z, defined as those born from 1997 to 2007,video - whether movies or television shows - is not a priority, the study found. 26% of Gen Zers in the survey said playing video games as their favorite entertainment activity, compared to 14% for listening to music, 12% for browsing the Internet and 11% for engaging on social media. Only 10% said they would rather watch a movie or TV show at home.

That compares to millennials (born 1983 to 1996),18% of whom chose watching movies and TV shows as their preferred mode of entertainment. Video games were the the entertainment option of choice for 16% of millennials.

“Gen Z would much rather spend time gaming, listening to music or using social media,” Jana Arbanas, entertainment leader at Deloitte, said. “That was a really alarming contrast that we saw relative to the shift that's happening and how Gen Z will impact this industry.”

“Millennials took the behaviors they developed as teenagers, and they've taken them forward into their early 30s, and so if Gen Z is anything like that, their behaviors may change slightly, but I don't see a complete aging out of their behaviors,” said Kevin Westcott, technology, media and telecom leader.

【1】What does paragraph 1 tell us about teenagers today?

    A.They are addicted to Fortnite.

    B.They prefer games to movies.

C.They don't like being told what to do.

D.They tend to spend leisure time alone.

【2】How will the entertainment industry develop according to Jana Arbanas?

A.It will offer fewer games and more music.

B.It will see a decline in the use of social media.

C.It will be impacted by the need of millennials.

D.It will be influenced by the preference of Gen Zers.

【3】What can we infer about Gen Zers from Kevin Westcott’s words?

A.They may outgrow their behaviors over time.

B.They’ll stop watching movies and TV shows.

C.They may not change much in their behaviors.

D.They’ll develop the same behaviors as millennials.

【4】Where is the text mostly taken from?

    A.A medical report.

    B.A shopping website.

    C.A popular newspaper.

    D.An entertainment fiction.

  • 24、Software expert James Curran helped rewrite Australia’s new curriculum(全部课程)for information technology subjects. He said the changes to the current curriculum could stop teenagers avoiding computing and maths subjects in high school.“Kids are naturally curious, but we don’t set up the curriculum in a way that awakens their curiosity so that they can learn the things they want to, and the things they have to,”Curran said.“Teaching maths and computing in a new way makes a very big difference.“

As more and more high school students drop out of advanced maths subjects, Dr Curran warned that computing subjects were in an even more difficult position than them. Only 1,748 year-12 students enrolled(登记)in software design and development in New South Wales last year—about half the 3,300 who studied the subject 10 years ago. Enrolments in information technology have declined sharply, from 10,000 in 2001 to just 1,939 students in 2021.

“Students are not taking computing subjects at the senior level because the subject is a bit out of date,”Curran said.“Computing is a subject that changes all the time and needs to be changed every few years, so I would like to see a continuous process of smaller changes and updates to it.”

As schools struggle to make students stick with the subjects of information technology, engineering and maths,1,000 primary schools across Australia have signed up for a new pro-gram to get young kids interested in high-tech jobs. The program uses online lessons to show children as young as six the process of designing the Olympics logo, and how Netflix collects information to decide which movies to make.

11-year-old student Mia Lucas had fun completing a model on UX design.   It is the“user experience”process that design teams use to create products.“I’ve always been interested in creating a website or an app but didn’t know the first step in doing that,“ she said.“The pro-gram helps me a lot.”

【1】What is the new curriculum supposed to be according to Curran?

    A.Typical.

    B.Controversial.

    C.Appealing.

    D.Challenging.

【2】What can we know about computing subjects in Australian schools?

A.They are less popular with today’s teenagers.

B.They are valued negatively by many schools.

C.They are harder than advanced maths subjects.

D.They are keeping a continuous rate of updating.

【3】How does the new program encourage the students to take computing subjects?

A.By offering high-tech jobs to them.

B.By turning lessons into virtual ones.

C.By letting them choose subjects freely.

D.By showing applications of the subjects.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.Australian students are deserting the computing subjects

B.A new curriculum fails to work with Australian students

C.How did an Australian student fall in love with computing?

D.Why did Australian schools stick with computing subjects?

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“I’ve taken up quilting,” my mother announced proudly over the phone one day.

    “That’s great, Mom,” I said.

My 70-year-old mother was undergoing chemotherapy for her cancer. It is a battle that I knew she would someday lose. Maybe soon. It broke my heart for more reasons than one.

“I’m working on a quilt for your sister now,” she said. “Once I’m done, I’ll make one for you.”

    “Thank you.”

She asked about the kids. We chatted about the weather. Then we said our goodbyes. The conversation was short, polite and surface level, as always.

Mom and I had never had what you would call a warm relationship. We never hugged. Never said “I love you”. I didn’t know why. Nothing bad had ever come between us. We just weren’t close the way I was with my kids. For years, I’d longed to break down that wall and to hear those three words. I just didn’t know how to start. We’d been this way for as long as I could remember. Finally, I came up with the idea to schedule regular lunch dates together. Maybe by sharing a meal we might share more of ourselves.

Then the pandemic hit. Suddenly I was on the front line of the COVID-19 battle. No way could I risk infecting Mom, especially with her weak immune system. I settled for daily phone calls instead. It wasn’t quite the bonding experience I’d hoped for. She promised she was working on that quilt for me, though.

My quilt was Mom’s last one.

On a Thursday in June, I got the call from my dad. He was so upset that all I could understand were the words “She’s gone”.

In the weeks that followed, I was torn between thankfulness that she was no longer suffering and an overwhelming desire to see her again, to connect, as if the pandemic had robbed me of that chance. If we’d only had more time. If she’d only said, “I love you.”

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

A few months later, I thought of the quilt Mom made for me, and decided to give quilting a try myself.
