二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Yesterday I started the Year of Giving, my first day of a year-long journey into exploring the act of giving and the meaning of charity. I chose December 15 as the starting date, which marked three years since my mother died from heart disease. She was one of the most generous people that I have ever known. She always thought of others first and certainly serves as an inspiration to me.

I had a rather busy day yesterday, ironic (具有讽刺意义的) for someone who is unemployed right now. In the morning I went to the gym, and unsuccessfully got the phone call from the unemployment office for some job searching. Before I knew it, it was noon. I grabbed a quick lunch and rushed down to a meeting. On my way to Connecticut, I wondered if I would see someone that I would feel forced to give my first $ 10 to. I was running late and decided to do it afterwards.

After the meeting I had about half an hour to find the first person of my Year of Giving! I decided to check out DuPont Circle. I had met a guy there named Jerry once and thought he would willing accept my $ 10. He wasn’t there, but I did see a man sitting by himself who looked really lonely, so I approached him. Now I had to figure out what I was going to say, I think I said something like, “Hi, can I sit down here?” “I would like to know if I could give you $ 10?” He asked me to repeat what I had said, I did, then he looked at me funny, got up and left.

I then started walking south where I spotted a man standing by the bus stop on Connecticut Ave. He appeared to be in his 60s. I don’t know what drew me to him, but I thought I would make my second attempt. I was a bit nervous and asked him which bus came by that stop. Then I explained that I was starting a year-long project to give $ 10 to someone every day and that I wanted to give my $ 10 for today to him. The gentleman, I later found out that his name was Ed, responded without hesitation that he could not accept my offer and that there were many people more deserving the money than him. This was exactly one of the things that I hoped would happen. People would think of others before themselves.

【1】The author set the starting date on December 15 to ____.

    A. help the charity B. remember his mother

    C. make an explosion   D. fulfill a wish if his mum

【2】 In the author’s first attempt to give away the money, ____.

    A. he was considered ridiculous

    B. he hesitated for a long time

    C. he was forced to donate the money

    D. he had no time to take action

【3】In the author’s second attempt, the gentleman refused his offer because ____.

    A. he didn’t need other’s help

    B. he thought more for others

    C. he didn’t care about money

    D. he wanted to get more money

【4】We can refer that the author was inspired by ____.

    A. true friendship   B. his own kindness

    C. generous donations D. human’s good nature

  • 22、Earth’s geologic ages---time periods defined by evidence in rock layers----typically last more than three million years. We’re barely 11,500 years into the current age ,the Holocene. But a new paper argues that we’ve already entered a new one—the Anthropocene, or “new man”, age.

The name isn’t brand-new. Nobel Prize winner Paul Crutzen, a co-author of the paper, coined it in 2002 to reflect the changes since the industrial revolution. The paper, however , is part of new push to formalize the Anthropocene age.

Recent human impacts have been so great that they’ll result in an obvious boundary (界限 ) in Earth’s rock layer, the author’s say. “We are so skilled at using energy and exploiting the environment that we are now a defining force in the geological process on the surface of the Earth,” said co-author Jan Zala, a geologist with the University of Leicester in the UK. Even so, it could take years or even decades for the International Union of Geological Science to formalize the new age.

If the concept of the Anthropocene age is to be formalized , scientists will first have to identify and define a boundary line ,or marker, that’s set in stone. “The key thing is thinking about how—thousands of years in the future---geologist might come back and actually recognize in the deposit in the UK.” It’s not as straightforward as you might think. The market has to be very precise, and it has to be recognized in many different parts of the world,” said Haywood, who wasn’t involved in the new study.

One candidate for the market is the distinctive radioactive signature left by atom bomb tests, which began in 1945. “The fallout (沉降 ) is basically across the world,” Haywood said. In a similar way, scientists used traces of the element iridium () left by shooting star strikes to help define the boundary between the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods---the time of the great dinosaur extinctions.

The push for a formal declaration of the Anthropocene age is about more than just scientific curiosity. The move the scientists write in the last issue of the journal Environmental Science & Technology, “might be used as encouragement to slow carbon emissions and biodiversity(生物多样性)loss” or “ as evidence on protection measures” Just as Haywood said, by underlining how much we're changing the environment, the formalization would be "a very powerful statement”.

1Which of the following is TRUE about the new paper?

    A. It denies the existence of the Holocene age.

    B. It documents the recent human impacts on earth.

    C. It pushes for the formalization of the Anthropocene age.

    D. It serves as a warning against the current mineral exploitation.

2Haywood's words in paragraph 4 indicate that___________________.

    A. the key to formalizing the new age is to find a deposit record set in stone

    B. the marker has to appear in various places globally to be considered valid

    C. finding a marker is a straightforward way to define the beginning of an age

    D. future geologists may find it hard to recognize the markers we choose today

3What can you infer from the passage?

    A. The element iridium may work as a marker for the Anthropocene age.

    B. The Nobel Prize winner Crutzen invented the name Holocene in 2002.

    C. The formalization of the new age may send a message for eco-protection.

    D. Human activities have resulted from the change of boundaries in rock layers.

4What is the best title for the passage?

    A. Humans Are Destroying the Earth, Geologists Warn

    B. Too Early to Set Things in Stone, Authorities Say

    C. More Evidence Is Needed, Universities Require

    D. A New Earth Age May Begin, Scientists Argue

  • 23、Some Chinese students born in the 1990’s created a microsatellite that took a stunning picture of the moon and the Earth in space, an image praised as one of the best of the two celestial bodies and one that Science magazine also used on Feb.15, 2019.

The photograph was done by the camera on Longjiang 2, a microsatellite developed by students at the Harbin Institute of Technology in Northeast China's Heilongjiang province.

Before its publication in the leading scientific journal, the picture had been widely circulated on mainstream media worldwide, with some foreign media outlets even praising it as one of the best photos of the moon and the earth so far.

Wei Mingchuan, born in 1991, was the chief designer responsible for the sub-system of Longjiang 2, a microsatellite launched last year together with Queqiao, the relay satellite for the Chang'e 4 lunar probe. Wei successfully developed LilacSat 1 -- the country's first microsatellite independently designed, developed and controlled by students -- and has been dubbed China's "youngest chief designer", despite being the oldest in his team.

Tai Mier, one of Wei's team members who was born in 1996, designed the camera on Longjiang 2 that captured the amazing picture of the moon and the Earth. Tai was only 20 years old when work on the project began.

The youngest member in the team is 20-year-old Huang Jiahe, who handled software design for the Longjiang 2 ground station. Beginning in primary school, Huang would buy all kinds of electronic components and parts. At first, he just simply disassembled and assembled the parts, but now he can design and create things. This young man, considered a genius by some, said that he is just curious and passionate about aerospace technology.

In their dormitory, aerospace-related items are everywhere. A postcard on the wall is printed with the words "we were born for our dreams", a reminder that the future has just begun for this youngest team of the Chang'e 4 mission.

  • 24、The rest of your daily routine is probably something like mine:Divided among streaming movies on Netflix, watching home improvement videos on YouTube and playing video games. There has to be more to life than this. With the holiday season upon us, now it is a good time to take a breather and consider a digital detox. 【1】 Here’s what we can do.

    Come Up With a Plan.

【2】 — after all, many students are attending school via videoconferencing apps. So Step One is assessing which parts of screen time feel toxic and make you unhappy. Step Two is creating a realistic plan to minimize consumption of the bad stuff.

    Create NoPhone Zones.

“My No.1 piece of advice is no phone in the bedroom overnight,” Dr. Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University, said. “Have a charging station outside the bedroom.”【3】 The dinner table, for example, is a prime opportunity for families to agree to put phones away for at least 30 minutes and reconnect.

    【4】

Social media sites create goals to keep users engaged. Those include the number of likes and followers we accumulate on Twitter. YouTube automatically plays the next recommended video, not to mention the neverending Twitter scrolling. For starters, we can resist the hooks by making our phones less intrusive. Turn off notifications for all apps except those that are essential for work and keeping in touch with people you care about. 【5】

    A.Resist the Hooks.

B.Not all screen time is bad.

C.Say no to Facebook or Twitter.

D.So I turned to psychology experts for their advice.

E.Whenever we are at home, we can put phones away.

F.Outside of our bedrooms, we can create other NoPhone Zones.

G.If you feel strongly addicted, take an extreme measure and turn the phone to grayscale mode.
