His father was often out-of-work because he was an alcoholic and his mother was a maid. His two sisters and only brother died young. As a young boy, Gehrig helped his mother with her work. However, he never let his tough start hold him back. He started playing for the Yankees in 1923 after attending Columbia University, setting many major league records during his career. • 22、Selena Gomez and I are scheduled to meet at a low-key coffee shop in Encino. Not wanting to keep the superstar waiting, I arrived at nine, 20 minutes early. As I was catching up on e-mails, Selena quietly scooted into the seat next to me. No bodyguard. Not even a drop of makeup. She was ten minutes early and so inconspicuous that no one else in the restaurant looked up so much. Selena was wearing Bebe shorts. She had a baby face and ordered a hot chocolate.

After making small talk about what she wore for the shoot, she dived into the subject of her career. Selena declared 2012 the year of movies. She filmed three: Spring Breakers, a drama; The Getaway, an action flick; and Hotel Transylvania, a comedy. Each is a marked move away from the teen style that made her a household name.

Now that her Disney days are behind her, Selena is at that unstable point in a child star’s career where she is trying to grow up---both as a person(she turned 20 in July)and as an artist. “Being part of the Disney Channel was such a blessing, and I’m super happy with what my show accomplished, but acting is something I would like to take on more seriously.” She continued, “I don’t necessarily feel accomplished. I want to creat a whole different persona when it comes to acting.”

Selena has been working fulltime since she was seven years old and scored a role on Barney&Friends. In 2007, when she was offered the lead in Wizards of Waverly Place, Selena, her mother, and her stepfather uprooted from Grand Prairie, Texas, to LA, where they are settling now.

【1】When was it that Selena arrived at the low-key coffee shop?

    A. At ten.

    B. At ten to nine.

    C. At ten past nine.

    D. At thirty past nine.

【2】Which of the following statements is ture according to the second paragraph?

    A. Selena went into her film career as soon as we met in the coffee shop.

    B. Three famous films filmed in 2012 have shown her teen style.

    C. The film Hotel Transylvania is an action flick filmed in 2012

    D. Each of the three films marks Selena’s move away from her teen style.

【3】How did Selena think of Disney days which were behind her?

    A. She thought of playing in Disney a blessing.

    B. She didn’t feel very satisfied with her show in Disney.

    C. She found her not accomplished in her performance in Disney.

    D. She believed her being part in Disney Channel a blessing.

【4】The underlined word in the last paragraph probably means _______”.

  • 23、   Many people believe that there is one form of their language that is more correct than others. They may believe for example that British English is more correct than other varieties; or that written English is more correct than spoken English. Often this belief is supported by reference books to grammars, usage guides or dictionaries: If something goes against a rule in a grammar, or if the word isn’t in the dictionary, it “must be wrong”. Since the reference books are most often based on observation of the standard written language, the argument is really circular: These books will naturally describe standard usage, because that is what they are for; but this does not mean that there is anything wrong with other kinds of usage that are less often described.

A better way of looking at things is to say that usage is “correct in its place”. Standard American English is correct in America, and formal written grammar is employed in formal writing. So this means there is no answer to the question: “What kind of English should learners study?” It depends on their purposes. For many learners, the best model is one or other of the two main standard varieties: British or American English. Neither of these is “better” than the other, and they are both used and understood worldwide.

People are also worried by language change. If younger people “break” the rules that older people have learnt, older people often feel disturbed: they are concerned that younger people no longer know their grammar, and that the language is going downhill. This is a needless worry: change is natural and inevitable, it cannot be stopped, and it does not generally affect a languages efficiency as a communicative tool. A great deal of modem English grammar would have been wrong three hundred years ago, and will perhaps be wrong again three hundred years from now.

1What can we infer from paragraph 1?

A.Learners are always confused by the reference books.

B.Some wrong usages can be found in the reference books.

C.Nobody can challenge the authority of the reference books.

D.Usages not mentioned in the reference books are not necessarily wrong.

2What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A.There is no “standard English”.

B.American English is better than British English.

C.A learner should master all the distinctions of different English.

D.The differences between British English and American English.

3Which word can replace the underlined word “inevitable” in paragraph 3?

    A.Avoidable. B.Formal. C.Certain. D.Temporary.

4What is the authors attitude towards the changes of English?

    A.Disturbed. B.Optimistic. C.Cautious. D.Doubtful.

  • 24、Good manners are a set of behaviors which mark someone as a civilized and cultured member of a society. 1 Someone who lacks good manners may be considered boorish(乡巴佬)or inappropriate. He or she may be at a disadvantage in many social situations.

2 Cultural traditions play an important role in manners, as do religious beliefs, social status, and economic class. What may be good manners in the White House may be considered inappropriate in the Kremlin(克里姆林宫). A standard of behavior acceptable in rural Greece might not be considered appropriate in a meeting with the Queen of England. As a general rule, people learn the manners which belong to their particular social, economic, and cultural situation. Travelers must learn specific rules of conduct to fit in as they visit other societies.

3 While the precise nature of good manners may vary, the underlying principles do not. Good manners involve treating people with respect and making sure that other people feel comfortable in a variety of situations. The old rule of “do as you would be done by” is sometimes used as an illustration of how manners are supposed to work.

4 Mannerly people are more likely to get ahead in the world of business. They also find themselves more commonly invited as guests and welcomed in society. In tense social situations, an awareness of good manners and social rules of behaviors can help release tension, or at least to avoid a serious incident, and someone’s attention to proper codes of conduct will be remembered. Travelers who take the time to learn about these will often find their way smoothed. 5

    A. Nobody is born with good manners.

    B. And they will be welcomed back in the future.

    C. Good manners help a lot in most societies.

    D. Manners are usually taught from a very young age.

    E. Good manners are a very important key to your child’s social success.

    F. Manners involve everything, from how to introduce people to how to eat.

    G. The precise behaviors involved in good manners vary from place to place.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    Effects of Acid Rain

After studying the Hubbard Brook Forest and other areas, researchers found several important effects of acid deposition, more commonly referred to as acid rain, on both natural and man-made environments. Aquatic (水生的) settings are the most clearly affected because acidic precipitation falls directly into them.

As this acidic liquid flows into larger bodies of water, it is diluted (稀释). However, over time, acids can increase and lower the overall pH of the body of water. Acid deposition also causes clay soils to release aluminum and magnesium, further lowering the pH in some areas. If the pH of a lake drops below 4.8, its plants and animals risk death. It is estimated that around 50,000 lakes in the United States and Canada have a pH below normal (about 5.3 for water). Several hundred of these have a pH too low to support any aquatic life.

Aside from aquatic bodies, acid deposition can significantly affect forests. As acid rain falls on trees it can make them lose their leaves, damage their bark, and stunt their growth. By damaging these parts of the tree, it makes them vulnerable to disease, extreme weather and insects. Damage to forests by acid rain is seen all over the world, but the most advanced cases are in Eastern Europe. Half of the forests in Germany and Poland and about 30 percent in Switzerland, are estimated to have been damaged.

Finally, acid deposition also has an effect on architecture and art because of its ability to corrode certain materials. As acid lands on buildings (especially those constructed with limestone), it reacts with minerals in the stones, sometimes causing them to disintegrate and wash away.
