二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Before the introduction of Little Golden Books in, 1942, children’s books weren’t necessarily made with children’s interests in mind. They were usually large volumes that were too difficult for young readers to handle or comprehend, and were sold at $ 2 to $ 3 each (that’s about $ 28-$ 42 today). But an American named Georges Duplaix wanted to change all that. He thought the solution was small, inexpensive books with fewer pages, simpler stories, and more illustrations so little kids could actually enjoy them. And so Little Golden Books appeared.

The first 12 titles of Little Golder-Books were released on October 1, 1942, at a price of only a quarter dollar. After only five months on the market, 1.5 million copies had been sold and many titles were already in their third printing. One of the keys to their huge sales was the fact that they were available in unusual places, such as department stores, drug stores, and supermarkets. Busy parents could keep their too energetic children occupied while they did their things.

The Poky Little Puppy of these original titles became the best-selling children’s book of the 20th century—a total of 14,898,341 copies were sold, but many Little Golden Books were also sold in impressive numbers. By 1967 more than 200 Little Golden Books had sold 1 million copies each. In 2002 the leading book brand (品牌) celebrated its 60th anniversary with l,200 unique titles and 2 billion books sold in nearly every country.

The books, of course, couldn’t stay $ 0.25 forever, although it did take 20 years before the price jumped to $ 0.29. The price continued to rise over the years, but still stayed under a dollar for decades. Currently, Little Golden Books retail (零售) for $ 3.99. Interestingly, collecting Little Golden Books has become a hobby. Most first editions are available for around $ 15. But if you just want to enjoy the stories, Little Golden Books are a hot item at thrift stores (日货店) , where they can often be purchased as low as $ 0.25.

【1】What do we know about children’s books before 1942?

A.They were carefully designed and decorated.

B.They usually told old simple stories.

C.They suited a particular group of readers.

D.They were costly and unfriendly to kids.

【2】Which was an effective marketing strategy of the first 12 titles of Little Golden Books?

A.Using various titles to meet readers diverse needs.

B.Impressing readers with different printing editions.

C.Being available to parents shopping with their kids.

D.Placing advertisements in public places with many kids.

【3】What do the numbers in Paragraph 3 show about the book brand?

    A.Its long history.

    B.Its pricing strategy.

    C.Its considerable success.

    D.Its popularity among collectors.

【4】What effort did Little Golden Books make in the last decades?

A.Working with more local thrift stores.

    B.Remaining affordable for most people.

C.Winning the hearts of various age groups.

D.Expanding its influence on the retail market.

  • 22、Green Transport Week

Transportation is one aspect we cannot do without it this day. However, the current transportation systems come along with a wide range of problems including global warming, environmental worsening, health implications (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual), and emission (排放) of greenhouse gases. In fact, the transport sector takes up 23% of the globe’ s greenhouse gas emission resulting from burning of fossil fuels. Out of the total greenhouse gas emissions, road transport takes up a lion share, 75% to be exact and this trend is to increase in the future. All this puts lot of pressure on the national governments to work out policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as oil demands.

Figures show that over 90% of all road transportation relies on oil. This figure almost goes hand- in- hand with the total global oil consumption, which stands at 60%. All these have caught the eyes of most governments and policies are being made to change this worrying trend of air pollution.

For example, car use is at an all-time high in Britain, and as the roads get busier, green transport—by foot and bike— gets more and more difficult. The car is being used for increasingly short journeys, as a proportion of all car journeys, 24% are less than 2 miles and 58% are less than 5 miles. The car accounts for 81% of our journeys, walking for only 3% and cycling for 0.5%.

Therefore, the ETA set up the first Green Transport Week in order to raise awareness of the part transport has to play in the areas of personal safety, quality of life and health—as well as its broader global effect on our environment.

In the past we have used Green Transport Week as a celebration of sustainable (可持续性的) transport and as an opportunity to launch a number of national campaigns such as Walk to School Day and Pop-Up Zebra Crossing. Green Transport Week is the most effective way to get a debate going about transport issues in your area, and to spread awareness of the relationship between transport and the environment in schools and workplaces.

【1】What problems does the present transportation systems cause?

    A.Global warming and environmental problems.

B.Emission of greenhouse gases and garbage problems.

C.Health and ways of food consumption.

    D.Relationship between humans and animals.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “a lion share” in the first paragraph mean?

    A.A large part.

    B.A small part.

    C.National policies.

    D.Oil demands.

【3】What is used most in Britain?

    A.Walking.

    B.Cycling.

    C.Cars.

    D.Subways.

【4】What is the purpose of Green Transport Week?

A.To celebrate sustainable development of car industry.

B.To raise awareness of the relationship between transport and the environment.

C.To raise awareness of children’s safety, quality of life and health.

D.To launch a number of international campaigns.

  • 23、   Get ready for a fun weekend outdoors by preparing for your camping trip strategically. Create a checkist to make sure you don’t forget anything super important, such as your camping tool and a first-aid kit.

【1】 If you want to completely absorb yourself in nature and be entirely relaxed, there are camping spots you can select to give you this experience. However, if you want to camp and have access to bathrooms, running water, and electrical outlets, you might search for a campground that advertises these facilities. Go online to find out campsite options in places such as your nearest national park. 【2】

Pick a campsite that has fun activities nearby. Think about which activities you want to do on your trip, such as hiking, fishing, kayaking, or swimming. You can choose a site that has at least one or two of your desired activities. 【3】

Reserve your camping spot beforehand. This is especially important if you’ve chosen a campground that’s more crowded. 【4】 You can also call the campground to speak to an employee about your visit.

Check the forecast to prepare for any rain or bad weather. 【5】 But it’s a good idea to look at the forecast for the weekend before you go. If you know there will be terrible weather, think about which camping location you choose—a campsite on low ground won’t keep you as dry as a campsite on higher ground with lots of trees to protect you from the rain.

A.Websites of campgrounds should list all of the facilities they have.

B.Choose the ideal campsite for your needs.

C.Decide which meals you’ll eat while camping.

D.Ideally you’ll be camping in sunny or cloudy weather.

E.Be aware that many campgrounds have a camping fee.

F.This will help you narrow down your campsite options.

G.So go online to reserve your spot for a selected date.

  • 24、   Researchers have studied how birth order affects kid’s personalities in the past, but one study out of the United Kingdom has found that firstborns may have an educational advantage over their younger siblings (兄弟姐妹).

Researchers at the University of Essex’s Institute for Social and Economic Research surveyed 3,553 individuals and 1,503 groups of siblings, and discovered that firstborn children tended to have higher educational aspirations and attainment. Only children and firstborn twins were not included in the study.

For each family involved in the study, researcher Feifei Bu examined sibling birth order, the number of children in the family, age spacing, sex, health, relationships with one another and educational aspirations. She found that firstborns had a greater probability—16 percent higher—of attending further education, compared with later-born sibling.

“The advantage of firstborns in educational outcomes may be partially explained by the fact that firstborns tend to have higher aspirations which push them toward high education levels,” Bu wrote in the published study.

She further explained to The Guardian that parenting could play a role. “It could be that the parents simply devote more time and energy to them; it could be that they are actually more intelligent. For me, I tend to lean towards the theory that the amount of time, energy and involvement that parents put into caring for their children is possibly at work here,” she said.

She also found age spacing to be a contributing factor. The further apart in age the siblings—for example, a six year instead of one year difference—the more likely both kids were to be successful. The idea is that with widely spaced siblings, parents have the ability to spread out their resources. In other words, they have time to give each child more time and money.

But younger siblings shouldn’t worry. The world is full of successful middle and youngest children willing to prove this study wrong.

1Who are more likely to complete higher levels of education according to Paragraphs 1 and 2?

    A. Only children. B. Firstborn twins.

    C. Younger siblings. D. Firstborn siblings.

2What is possibly important for kids’ educational achievement according to Bu?

    A. Parental investment. B. Parents’ intelligence.

    C. Kids native intelligence. D. Kids’ school environment.

3What is the influence of wider age spacing between two siblings?

    A. It may cause conflicts between them.

    B. It may place more pressure on parents.

    C. Both of them are more likely to succeed.

    D. They are likely to be different from each other.

4How is the text mainly developed?

    A. By listing examples. B. By giving descriptions.

    C. By setting down general rules. D. By presenting research findings.
