二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Skin cancer deaths among men have jumped sharply in wealthy nations since 1985, with death rates among women rising more slowly or even declining, researchers have told a medical conference in Glasgow.

Reasons for the difference between sexes are unclear but evidence suggests men are less likely to protect themselves from the sun or pay attention to public health warnings, Dorothy Yang, a doctor said.

More than 90% of melanoma (黑素瘤) cancers are caused by skin cell damage from exposure to the sun or other sources of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, according to the US Centers for Disease Control.

In eight of 18 developed countries examined, men’s skin cancer death rates had increased in the past 30 years by at least 50%.

But the nations with the biggest rise in skin cancer deaths were often not those with the highest death rates, the research showed. In Australia, for example, nearly six out of every 100,000 men died of the disease in 2013 -2015. That is twice the second highest death rate (Finland), but only a 10% increase compared to 30 years earlier.

Australia has been an early performer of public health media campaigns since the 1970s to promote sun-smart’ behaviour. While debate continues on how much of Australia’s record skin cancer rate originates from the sun, 30 years of public health campaigns have no doubt made Australians acutely aware of the dangers.

Skin cancer deaths among women in 1985 in Australia occurred at half the rate as for men, and declined by 10% over the next 30 years. In other countries, female death from the disease went down over the same period. In some other sun-loving nations, however, women saw at least as sharp a jump from 1985 to 2015 in death rates as men.

Scientists are studying whether biological or genetic factors might also play a role in skin cancer, but findings so far are inconclusive.

1What can be concluded from the passage?

A.Death rates among women are declining all the time.

B.Australia is the first country to conduct public health media campaigns.

C.Death rate of skin cancer in Australia was once the highest.

D.Female death rate of skin  cancer in some sun-loving  countries went down.

2What probably keeps people away from skin cancer according to the text?

    A.Declining exposure to UV.

    B.Biological or genetic factors.

    C.People’s love for sun.

D.People paying little attention to public health warnings.

3What does the underlined word “inconclusive” in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.Unclear. B.Evident. C.Definite. D.Satisfying.

4What’s people’s attitude to public health campaigns in Australia?

    A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Critical. D.Controversial.

  • 22、Society has certain standards for beauty. But Romanian photographer Mihaela Noroc, who spent nearly four years shooting portraits of women from around the world, is challenging these standards.

She believes that beauty can take on many forms. “Beauty just means being yourself,” Noroc told NPR. K “I don’t think we have to change ourselves to be in a certain way;I think we just have to keep ourselves as we are and don’t necessarily need to change.”

Inspired by a trip to Africa in 2013, Noroc has traveled to more than 50 countries and regions since then. In 2017, she compiled a book called The Atlas of Beauty:Women of the World in 500 Portraits to show how many different kinds of beauty there are in the world. A new edition of her book has recently caused heated discussion on social media.

From a struggling Russian dancer to a talkative cafe owner in New York ,Noroc’s subjects engaged her in deep conversation. Noroc found out what moves them, what their daily struggles and joys are, and what brings beauty into their own lives. “No matter where I go, it’s the women that carry all the culture and traditions of a place. I really try to focus on women’s stories, how they face challenges and overcome them,” Noroc told CNN.

Her encounter with Ala, a student at a self defense school in Jordan called “She Fighter;’ left a lasting impression on her.Ala raises her clenched fists as she looks into the camera while her face is covered by a white hijab. Noroc describes She Fighter as “the first self-defense school for women in the Arab world,” and writes,“I discovered an amazing initiative and a splendid sisterhood.”

In Iran, Noroc met Norocmet Farnoush, a woman who lives in two worlds “In one she is an economist, by profession. In the other, she is an artist, because this is her passion." For Noroc,--the women’s beauty lies in how natural and comfortable they appear while just being themselves.

【1】What does Noroc think of beauty?

A.Beauty standards are to be obeyed.

B.Beauty means accepting who you are.

C.Beauty is valuing life and loving others.

D.Beauty requires people to change bravely.

【2】Why was Noroc impressed by She Fighter?

A.It encouraged women to fight for their own rights.

B.It’s the first female school in the Arab world.

C.It showed strong unity and initiative.

D.Its members were very good at fighting.

【3】The author wrote the article mainly to________.

A.recommend the book The Atlas of Beauty

B.introduce some women with true beauty

C.share Noroc’s traveling experiences around the world

D.show how Noroc challenged traditional standards of beauty

  • 23、A new study finds climate events such as flooding, heat waves and drought worsen more than half of the known diseases that infect people. These diseases include malaria, cholera and anthrax.

Researchers examined medical literature (文献) of established cases of such diseases. They found out that 218 out of the known 375 human infectious diseases seemed to be made worse by extreme weather connected to climate change. The study connected more than 1,000 pathways from climate events to sick people. In some cases, heavy rains and flooding sicken people through disease-carrying mosquitoes, rats and deer. Other events, like warming oceans and heat waves, spoil seafood and droughts bring bats carrying viral infections to people.

Medical doctors, going back to the days of ancient Greek civilization, have long connected disease to weather. But this study shows how widespread the influence of climate events is on human health. “If climate is changing, the risk of these diseases is changing,” said Dr Jonathan Patz. “The findings of this study are terrifying and illustrate well the enormous (巨大的) consequences of climate change on human pathogens (病原体). Humans need to all work together to prevent disasters from climate change.”

Camilo Mora, a climate data expert, said the study is not about predicting future cases. “These are things that have already happened,” he noted. Here’s one example Mora knows from his own experience. About five years ago, Mora’s home in rural Colombia was flooded, creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Mora contracted Chikungunya, a virus spread by mosquito bites. He survived, but he still suffers pain related to the disease. In another case, the remains of a reindeer which died from anthrax were unearthed as the Siberian permafrost (永冻土) melted from warming in 2016. A child touched the dead animal, got anthrax, and an outbreak spread.

Dr Aaron Bernstein said the study is a good warning about climate and health for now and the future. He added, “But of course, it only reports on what we already know and what’s yet unknown about pathogens may be yet more compelling about how preventing further climate change may prevent future disasters like COVID-19.”

【1】Which is TRUE according to Dr Jonathan?

A.The risk of climate is always changing.

B.Ancient people connected diseases to weather too.

C.Humans should deal with climate change urgently.

D.Human diseases were illustrated in Greek civilization.

【2】What does the author want to prove by mentioning the examples in Paragraph 4?

A.The quick spread of the virus.

    B.The disastrous flooding in Colombia.

    C.The destructive Siberian permafrost.

D.The bad impacts of climate events on human health.

【3】What does Dr Aaron stress in the last paragraph?

A.COVID-19 still remains a mystery to people.

B.More disasters will be caused by climate change.

C.Climate change is a good warning about human health.

D.People should care more about the unknown diseases.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Climate change helps spread some deadly illnesses

B.Climate events are connected with infectious diseases

C.Climate disasters provide key information about diseases

D.Extreme climate may lead to serious disasters

【5】What does the underlined word “compelling” mean in the last paragraph?

    A.Convincing.

    B.Challenging.

    C.Driving.

    D.Forcing.

  • 24、One of the negative effects from the all-pervasive social media is that it has almost killed the reading habit. To change this situation, a group of IT professionals and engineers have come together to start the 'Let's Read India' movement in Maharashtra by taking their library to the people's doorstep.

Prafulla Wankhede, one of the founders of the campaign, says it's getting an overwhelming response. "Our primary objective is to bring this WhatsApp and social media generation back to books and make them better educated and more civilized citizens," he said.

Wankhede said their library van went to remote places lacking major facilities. "We want to reach out to every person who wants to read a book. We have three mobile libraries now. People can borrow books for a week for free with only one condition: the borrower should submit a 300 -word review about the book to be able to take a second book," he said. "Our objective is to ensure people read."

"Those who want to get books can connect through our social media website and app. This will enable them to know the locations of the mobile library that has GPS attached. Besides, there is a QR code for each book. The mobile library makes the weekly visit to the identified locations," Wankhede said.

Initially, “Let's Read India” Foundation had planned to start the initiative in Maharashtra, Goa and Madhya Pradesh, the plan was shelved because of the pandemic situation. "We are now focusing on Maharashtra," said Wankhede. "Once we grow in Maharashtra, we'll then shift our focus to the rest of the country." The foundation also plans to start a YouTube channel where well-known authors' speeches, interviews and reviews will be played.

"We not only offer books, we also suggest what should be read. Many people are really confused about their reading choices. If they are able to read the kind of books they want, it will help them in their academic and professional life," said Wankhede.

【1】What is the purpose of the campaign?

    A.To build mobile libraries.

    B.To advocate online reading.

    C.To promote reading habits.

    D.To fight against social media.

【2】The mobile libraries can be described as ________.

    A.conventional

    B.comfortable

    C.impractical

    D.convenient

【3】Why does the foundation plan to start a YouTube channel?

    A.To shift the focus.

    B.To deliver speeches.

    C.To better serve readers.
