24、
At the age of 15, most students are trying their best to get into a good high school. But a Canadian teenager named William Gadoury is not interested in this kind of thing. Instead, he has great interest in Mayan (玛雅人的) culture. Recently, the 15-year-old boy said that he had discovered a lost Mayan city in Mexico.
William lives in Quebec, Canada. He showed great interest in Mayan culture at a young age. Many boys usually like spending their free time playing computer games, but William likes learning about Mayan culture. To his surprise, he noticed while people from other cultures liked building their cities near the water, Mayan liked building their cities in forests, on mountains or in other places far away from the water. Why did they make such choices? William wanted to find out the answer. After studying the locations of 117 known Mayan cities, he found out the connection between the cities and the stars: it seems the Mayans built their cities to match different constellations (星座).
William compared the known Mayan cities with 23 constellations. While studying the final constellation, he saw three stars but only two known cities. So he guessed there might be another city that people hadn’t found yet. With the help of the Canadian Space Agency and Google Maps, he finally found a place that he believes is the lost Mayan city. However, not all scientists think so. One scientist says that the so-called “lost Mayan city” is in fact an abandon corn field which wasn’t used many years ago.

25、 There was once a little boy with a bad temper (脾气). He often had fights with his friends. One day, his father gave him a bag of nails (钉子) and told him to hammer (敲) a nail into the fence every time he lost his temper. The boy listened to his father and did what his father told him to do.
The first day, the boy drove 17 nails into the fence. Then the number of nails became less and less in the following days. The boy found that it was easier to keep his temper than to drive the nails into the fence. Finally, the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and his father asked him to pull out one nail each time he was able to keep his temper.
The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same as it was before. When you say some words in anger, your bad temper will leave a scar just like the hole. Even if you say you’re sorry, the wound is still there. If you hurt a person with words, the wound is as bad as a physical one. Friends are rare jewels (稀有珍宝). They make you smile and feel happy. So never hurt your friends.”
Since then the boy had never fought with his friends. He learned how to get on with others and he never lost his temper again.

27、Do you like watching TV or playing video games? How long do you use your phone a day? We call the time we spend on TV, computers and mobile phones “screen time”.
In a study in Australia, scientists ask 577,000 children how much time they spend on screens, schoolwork and sports every day. They find about 68% of them spend more than two hours on screens.
Two hours of screen time a day is bad for children’s health. The study shows harm (伤害) starts after 75 minutes of screen time for girls and 105 minutes for boys. Why is that? Just because ▲. In our study, 24% of boys spend an hour a day exercising, but only 14% of girls do that,” Dr Khan said.
So it is important for children to do sports and balance (平衡) their screen time. Tom Hindhaugh has a “three-time” system for his son Patrick—a “go time” for schoolwork, a “slow time” to play video games or talk with friends on the Internet, and a “green time” for exercise or outdoor games. “We need to get children outside and move.
