二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The European Space Agency wants to build an international “moon village” around 2050. Russia has also described plans for sending astronauts to the moon in 2030, although many doubt whether it can afford the costs. China also plans to send its astronauts onto the moon in 2030. In the United States, NASA announced the goal of putting Americans on the moon again by 2024, four years ahead of the previous schedule.

NASA’s efforts to reach the moon by 2024 will depend on whether Congress will give it the necessary money. NASA has asked for an additional $1.6 billion for the year of 2020. But if NASA wants to complete its project ahead of the schedule, it might cost a total of $20 billion to $30 billion. Recently, NASA says the price may not be so high, because a lot of commercial partners are willing to put money in the moon landing and lunar station building projects.

    So why go back?

Moon is an obvious stop along the way to Mars. The ice discovered within polar areas where the sun never shines is not only a precious source of drinking water for future astronauts visiting the moon, but also for water that can be broken down into hydrogen and oxygen, which could be used as energy for the spacecraft before it heads out into the solar system.

Special scientific researches could be carried out at the far side of the moon because they would not face earthly interference (干扰) there. For example, it is possible to observe the low-frequency radio light coming from Sun or beyond because there is little radio noise interfering with it.

【1】How many countries or organizations have planned to land on the moon in 2030?

    A.1.

    B.2.

    C.3.

    D.4.

【2】Why has NASA decided to work with commercial partners?

A.They can share the station building costs.

B.The US government cannot afford the costs.

C.NASA wants to introduce more competitors.

D.They have unique and more advanced technologies.

【3】How can moon stations help the spacecraft heading to Mars?

A.By serving as energy stations for the spaceships.

B.By providing healthy food for future astronauts.

C.By sending out better signals to the solar system.

D.By exploring a new living place for human beings.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.Updates on the Moon Landing Schedules

B.Money Needed for Different Space Programs

C.Plans and Reasons for Future Moon Landing

D.Countries Competing to Land on the Moon Earlier

  • 22、A new report links eating eggs to an increased risk of heart disease. The results follow several earlier studies that found eating eggs was generally healthy. The new report combines data from six other earlier studies. It shows a 6 percent increased risk of heart disease when the average number of eggs a person eats each day increased by half an egg.

In the United States, eggs are generally one of the top sources of cholesterol (胆固醇) in a person’s diet. Individuals with higher levels of cholesterol in their diets are at increased risk for the development of heart disease later in life. The team examined data gathered from six studies that involved a total of 29,615 people. Earlier researchers had followed these people for an average of 17.5 years. At the start, the participants answered questions about the foods they ate. But they were not asked about their diets at any time after that.

Over time, there were 5,400 heart-related incidents among the group. This included 2,088 deadly and non-deadly heart disease events and 1,302 deadly and non-deadly stroke events. It also included 1,897 deadly and non-deadly heart failure events and 113 other deaths from cardiovascular (心血管的) disease.

After examining the data, Allen’s team found a link between egg consumption as reported at the start of the study and people’s risk of developing heart disease. As their egg consumption rose, so did their risk.

Eggs contain a lot of cholesterol—about 200 milligrams. That is the highest daily amount recommended under current guidelines. Less than one egg a day on average is acceptable from a nutritional standpoint. The study is observational, meaning it can only show there is a link between egg consumption and heart disease. But it cannot prove eggs are the cause of the disease. It may just be that people eating a lot of eggs are also consuming a lot of bacon.

【1】What were the participants asked about at the start of the study?

    A.Their birthplaces.

    B.Their diets.

    C.Their physical conditions.

    D.Their ages.

【2】What are the statistics in paragraph 3 about?

A.The number of deaths from heart disease.

B.The number of treatments for heart disease.

C.The number of different causes of heart disease.

D.The number of heart disease cases among the participants.

【3】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

    A.Eggs are good for everyone.

B.Eggs are the cause of heart disease.

C.Eating eggs with limits is beneficial.

D.Eating eggs has nothing to do with heart disease.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Eggs Have Great Nutritional Value

B.Eggs Will Disappear from People’s Diet

C.It Is Much Better to Increase Egg Consumption

D.Diet Containing Eggs May Be Linked to Heart Disease

  • 23、At first, Dorothy Sorlie thought she was just getting old, though not as gracefully as she’d hoped. Retired from teaching English at a local college, Sorlie, then 74, began losing interest in things she'd enjoyed, including reading and cooking. She couldn’t concentrate. Her handwriting changed. The symptoms occurred so gradually that initially she wasn’t aware anything was happening.

Things kept getting worse. She started worrying that she might be developing early dementia (痴呆). The physical symptoms progressed too. Most worrisome, she began having trouble walking and started falling. Through it all, her doctors struggled to explain what was happening.

She and her husband, Jim Urness, were desperate for answers; It would take years before they got them. The doctors’ diagnoses (诊断), all incorrect, could account for one or two of Sorlie’s symptoms but not all of them, and none of the treatments seemed to help.

The couple traveled across the country looking for someone who could tell them what was wrong. However, one possible explanation for her symptoms after another proved incorrect. At last, Sorlie’s primary care doctor,Kevin Wergeland found the disease responsible for all her symptoms was a little-known condition called normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Although her condition was detected at an advanced state, it was treatable.

In fact, NPH is sometimes referred to as “treatable dementia”. It is an insidious (潜伏的) and mysterious disorder that can copy many more common problems including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. An estimated 700000 people in the United States have NPH, although ifs believed that fewer than 20 percent of them are correctly diagnosed.

Sorlie is now free of NPH symptoms, and taking advantage of her good health and using her dramatic recovery to inform others about NPH. She gives presentations to local senior centers as a volunteer. “If this awareness can help one person avoid what my husband and I endured, ” Sorlie says, “then my efforts are worth it.”

【1】Which of the following best describes Sorlie’s experience of seeking treatment?

    A.Tough.

    B.Inspiring.

    C.Unfair.

    D.Hopeful.

【2】Why are most people with NPH incorrectly diagnosed?

A.The doctors are not responsible and professional.

B.It is a rare disease that few cases have ever occurred.

C.The symptoms are similar to those of other common diseases.

D.The medical conditions in most cities are not advanced enough.

【3】Why does Sorlie serve as a volunteer in local senior centers?

A.To inform senior people about their health condition.

B.To provide suggestions on how to recover from NPH.

C.To raise peopled awareness about leading a healthy life.

D.To help people with NPH suffer less in getting correct diagnosis.

【4】Where is the text probably from?

    A.A medical record.

    B.A biography.

    C.A science report.

    D.A popular magazine.
