  • 21、   A house is the most expensive thing most people will buy. Very few people have enough money of their own to buy a home, so they have to borrow money from a bank. Borrowing money from a bank to buy a house is called “take a mortgage (抵押). The bank usually lends money or gives a mortgage for twenty-five years. Houses are so expensive that many people nowadays have to borrow as much as $ 50 000. In other words, they will have a $ 50 000 mortgage.

How can you get a mortgage When you find a house you like, you go to a bank. The bank will research you financial history and decide if they think you are a good risk. They will want to know what kind of job you have, what kind of salary you make, and how long you have had the job. They will also want to know how much money you have. In additionthe banks will require a down payment. Depending on which state you live in the bank may require as much as 30% of the-price of the house as a down payment. The bank will then lend you the rest of the money to buy the house. Many people are never able to buy a house because they cannot save enough money for the down payment.

B.has more than twenty-five years to pay back the money

C.has less than twenty-five years to pay back the money

D.has about twenty-five years to pay back the money

  • 22、Living with your parents has its benefits at least when it comes to raising your kids― their grandkids. Two new studies add to the evidence that grandmothers can enhance the survival of grandchildren. That is, unless grandma's too old or lives too far away.

Humans are unusual in that the females live long past the age at which they stop having babies. Patrick Bergeron, professor of biology at Bishop's University in Quebec, said that most of the organisms will reproduce up to their very last moment. This increase is often explained by the so-called "grandmother effect". He thinks there could still be a benefit for women who stop having babies to increase their genetic footprint by helping their daughters to raise larger families.

To explore the "grandmother effect" hypothesis (假设),Bergeron and his colleagues examined nearly 200 years' worth of French-Canadian population records from the 17th and 18th centuries. "At the time, life was tough. In some years, a third o£ the kids were not even making it to one year of age.” But the researchers found that having a grandmother still alive was a definite plus."Families with grandmothers alive were larger by about two and the survival of these grandchildren to age 15 was much improved."

This beneficial effect was only seen when the matriarchs (女家长)lived nearby. That role is tougher for them to fulfills as they get older in poor health, which brings us to the second study. The researchers found that the benefits associated with having a grandmother on hand depended on her age. Once manna hit 75, the grandchild survival benefit disappeared. This was almost certainly due to some form of indirect resource competition, though, rather than wickedness (邪恶)on the part of co- resident grandmothers.

So a healthy grandma helps make for a healthy grandchild. If ',over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house" isn't too long a trip.

【1】What's the second paragraph mainly about?

A.Differences between animals and human beings.

    D.By telling stories.

【3】What can we infer from the second study?

A.Society should be concerned about the old women.

B.Grandmothers over 75 years old are unwilling to help.

C.Some grandmothers may occupy kids' relative recourses.

D.Some grandmothers are getting wicked after they are old.

【4】Which of the following can be the most helpful grandmother according to the passage?

A.A healthy one living nearby. ,

  • 23、   Rising numbers of older adults are unable to care for themselves, often leading to serious health problems and even death, according to state and local government agencies. So-called self-neglect cases generally involve the inability to perform basic self-care, such as providing oneself with food, personal health, medication and safety.

Seniors who no longer drive, for instance, are often unable to get to medical appointments, worsening health problems that can make them unable to care for themselves. A fall can result in body injuries leaving one bedridden (卧床不起的) and unable to care for oneself. Failure to pay bills for public services could lead to service cutoffs. Forgetting to pay rent could lead to the loss of a home.

Mr. McCormack, 75 years old, and his wife, 71, both had mental illness and stayed in hospitals from time to time, unable to care for their possessions. Despite repeated visits to their home by local officials, the McCormacks declined assistance. But after they were found living in their car parked outside their house in December 2017, officials removed them from their home and helped them settle in a nursing home.

Self-neglect cases, like above, involved 144,296 people across the country in 2018, according to a report. The federal government doesn’t have comparable data for previous years, but several state and local service providers say they are seeing the self-neglect problem swell.

The reasons seniors stop caring for themselves vary, including illness, depression and poverty. The loss of the spouse or a neighbor who previously kept an eye on an individual often starts a decline into self-neglect, experts say. And the key to reducing self-neglect cases is providing services to enable seniors to remain in their homes safely, such as reliable transportation for medical appointments and shopping, as well as affordable home help.

1What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2?

A.Give examples of self-neglect cases. B.Provide some advice for seniors.

C.Summarize the previous paragraph. D.Introduce a new topic for discussion.

2What do we know about the McCormacks?

A.They longed for help from others. B.They took good care of themselves.

C.They couldn’t afford to go to hospital. D.They ended up living in the nursing house.

3What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Self-care Benefits Greatly the Seniors.

    B.Self-Neglect Rises Among the Elderly.

    C.Government’s Encouragement on Self-care.

    D.Many Years’ Investigation on Self-Neglect.

  • 24、Researchers at the University of Helsinki recently examined hyperactivity (过分好动) and inattention in more than 11, 000 Finnish pet dogs. They found that the dog’s age and gender, as well as exposure to other dogs, played a part.

“We wanted to collect a large behavioral data of dogs to better understand behavior problems that are common in our companion dogs. We studied seven characteristics: noise sensitivity, fearfulness, fear of surfaces and heights, inattention, compulsive behavior, separation – related behavior, and aggression,” says Sini Sulkama, a researcher at the University of Helsinki.

Their goal was to identify demographic (人口统计的), environmental, and behavioral risk factors that could influence these anxiety - related characteristics in dogs. Their analysis showed that hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention were more common in young dogs and male dogs. They also found some major differences among breeds.

Interestingly, researchers discovered that the owner’s experience with dogs also had an impact. They found that hyperactivity and impulsivity are more common in dogs that aren’t their owners’ first dogs. “We can only conclude the possible relationship between these factors, but one possible explanation is that people try to choose easy individuals from less active breeds, like companion dog breeds as their first dogs,” says Sulkama.

They also calculated the urban environmental score for each dog. That describes how the land is used around the dog’s current home, breaking it down into artificial surface, agricultural areas, forests, and semi natural areas.

Although it might seem like most dogs are easily distracted to some extent, studies suggest that about 15% of dogs display high levels of hyperactivity and 20% show high levels of inattention. Researchers say they can make it easier to identify and treat dogs’ hyperactivity and inattention and may benefit the research. They can also be helpful when choosing to add a dog to the family. You might want to adopt a pet with the characteristics of a breed that matches your lifestyle.

【1】What’s one of the factors causing dogs’ hyperactivity?

    A.Their noise sensitivity.

    B.Their owners’ character,

    C.Their aggressive behavior.

    D.Their exposure to other dogs.

【2】What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A.The research content.

    B.The research process.

    C.The background of the study.

D.The composition of the research team.

【3】What can we learn from the text?

A.Active dogs are less likely to suffer from hyperactivity.

B.People are sick of dogs with hyperactivity.

C.Hyperactivity in dogs is transmitted by their owners.

D.People’s first pet dog is often less active.

【4】What is the purpose of the study?

    A.To understand dogs’ behavioral problems.

B.To collect a large behavioral data of dogs.

C.To help a company promote pet supplies.

    D.To research dogs’ mental health.
