二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Just when we thought we had seen all the magical things that 3D printing can do, here comes another—a working artificial leg has transformed the life of a little Canadian duckling(小鸭) called Dudley, who had been struggling to get by after losing a leg.

The story began on August 19th, 2013, when the newly-born healthy Dudley and his brother were placed inside a chicken coop(笼子) at the K9-1-1 Animal and Rescue Services in Sicamous, British Columbia. Within a few hours, an aggressive chicken attacked the two, killing Dudley's brother and leaving him with a disability!

While Dudley could swim with his single leg, he had a hard time walking on the firm ground. Determined to help him, Doug Nelson, the owner of the shelter decided to consult Terence Loring, the founder of a design firm that among other things also offers 3D printing designs.

Given that he had just launched 3 pillar designs, Terence somewhat hesitated to take on a duckling as his first client(客户). But as soon as he saw brave little Dudley walking around on one leg, Terence knew he had to do something. Using his biomedical engineering training, Terence spent the next few weeks creating a 3D template(模板), after he found out how ducks' legs work in YouTube videos about ducks. Once ready, he sent them to Ontario-based 3D engineering firm Proto3000, who agreed to print the leg.

The second artificial leg was much stronger than the first one. When the artificial leg that is printed from strong ABS, a thermoplastic(热塑性塑料) that becomes soft and moldable when heated and attached to a foot designed from soft and flexible robber-like plastic, was fitted to Dudley, his whole manner changed. He wagged his tail and showed it off to his best frienda pig called Elsie.

Of course, as Dudley has been growing, the leg and foot have had to be replaced. But that hasn't bothered Terence who continues to improve the design. The best part is that Terence has put all the designs on his website so that anyone wishing to help out an animal suffering from a similar injury can do so, by simply hitting the print button on his/her 3D printer!

1How did Dudley lose his leg?

    A.He wasn't well looked after.

B.He lost it in a traffic accident.

C.He lost it in a chicken attack.

D.He was born with a disability.

2What do we know about Terence Loring's design firm?

A.It is the first one to offer 3D printing designs.

B.3D printing designs are only part of its services.

C.Its main clients are injured animals.

    D.It often cooperates with Proto3000.

3What did Terence first do to make an artificial leg for Dudley?

A.Consulting Dudley's owner about the solution.

    B.Creating a 3D template with the help of Proto3000.

    C.Being trained in biomedical engineering.

    D.Watching YouTube videos about ducks.

    4To Terence's great satisfaction, ________.

A.Dudley has got a permanent artificial leg

B.a possible solution has been found to help suffering animals

C.he succeeded in his first attempt to make Dudley an artificial leg

D.his design has become widely known online

  • 22、   A new study suggests that identical(同卵的) twins are not exactly the same genetically. Scientists in Iceland examined DNA from 387 pairs of identical twins, their parents, children, husbands or wives. The examinations led the team to find “early mutations that separate identical twins,” lead researcher and geneticist Kari Stefansson said.

Mutations are small changes in DNA that can happen when a cell divides in an attempt to copy itself. These small changes can influence a person’s physical appearance or control a person’s ability to fight a disease.

The newly-discovered mutations show that identical twins do have genetic differences. On average, identical twins have 5.2 of these early genetic differences, the researchers found. These differences represent a small part of each twin’s genetic material. But they could influence why one twin is taller or why one is at greater risk for some cancers than the other.

In the past, many researchers believed physical differences seen in identical twins were related mostly to environmental influences, such as nutrition or lifestyle behaviors.

Jan Dumanski is a geneticist at Sweden’s Uppsala University. He was not involved in the study. He praised the findings as “a clear and important contribution” to medical research. “The implication is that we have to be very careful when we are using twins as a model” for examining the influences of genetics or the environment, Dumanski said.

A 2008 paper in The American Journal of Human Genetics found some genetic differences between identical twins. The new study, however, goes beyond earlier work by including the DNA of parents, children, husbands and wives of identical twins. Studying family members permitted the researchers to examine when genetic mutations happened in two different kinds of cells: those present in only one individual and those passed on to the person’s children.

Stefansson said his team found twins where a mutation is present in all cells of the body of one twin, but not in the other twin at all. However, “sometimes the second twin may show the mutation in some cells, but not all cells,” he added.

1What is a function of mutations?

    A.Change people’s DNA.

B.Help a cell to copy itself.

    C.Influence people’s physical appearance.

D.Increase people’s ability to fight diseases.

2Why did the study include the DNA of family members?

A.To check when the mutations happened.

B.To identify the results of former research.

C.To find out where the mutations happened.

D.To examine the influence of the environment.

3What is Jan Dumanski’s attitude toward the study?

    A.Cautious. B.Doubtful.

    C.Concerned. D.Positive.

4Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.A Breakthrough in Identical Twins Study

B.Identical Twins: Not Genetically Exact Copies

C.Genetic Differences Caused by Family Members

D.DNA Decides the Difference between Identical Twins

  • 23、A major challenge for fully autonomous vehicles is navigating bad weather, snow especially. Averaging more than 200 inches of snow every winter, Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula is the perfect place to push autonomous vehicle tech to its limits. In two papers presented at SPIE Defense+Commercial Sensing 2021, researchers from Michigan Technological University discuss solutions for snowy driving scenarios that could help bring self-driving options to snowy cities like Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis and Toronto.

Just like the weather at times, self-driving is not a sunny or snowy yes-no designation (指定). Autonomous vehicles cover a series of levels, from cars already on the market with blind spot warnings or braking assistance, to vehicles that can switch in and out of self-driving modes, to others that can navigate entirely on their own. Major automakers and research universities are still tweaking self-driving technology. Occasionally accidents occur, either due to a misjudgment by the car’s artificial intelligence(AI) or a human driver’s misuse of self-driving features.

Humans have sensors, too: our scanning eyes, our sense of balance and movement, and the processing power of our brain help us understand our environment. These seemingly basic inputs allow us to drive in virtually every scenario, even if it is new to us, because human brains are good at generalizing new experiences. In autonomous vehicles, two cameras scan and perceive depth using stereo vision to mimic human vision, while balance and motion can be gauged(计量) using a measurement unit. But computers can only react to situations they have encountered before or been programmed to recognize.

Since artificial brains aren’t around yet, task-specific artificial intelligence(AI) algorithms(计算) must take the wheel. Fisheye cameras widen the view while other cameras act much like the human eye. Infrared(红外线) picks up heat signatures. Radar can see through the fog and rain.

“All snow is not created equal,” Bos said, pointing out that the variety of snow makes sensor detection a challenge. “AI is like a chef -- if you have good ingredients, there will be an excellent meal,” he said.

【1】In what aspect is self-driving similar to the weather?

    A.Both need assistance.

    B.Both give warnings.

    C.Both extend their limits.

    D.Both have different levels.

【2】What might a computer fail to do?

    A.Generalize new experiences.

    B.Scan the unfamiliar environment.

    C.Help vehicles achieve balance.

    D.React to situations from memory.

【3】What does Paragraph 4 mainly focus on?

    A.Artificial brains.

    B.Fisheye cameras in cars.

    C.Applications of Al.

    D.The power of Radar.

【4】What does Bos want to convey in the last paragraph?

A.Bad weather discourages applications of Al.

B.AI has great potential to improve self-driving.

C.AI can help chefs to make wonderful meals.

D.Bad weather poses a challenge to sensor detection.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

    The Science of Happiness

Kate is a bright young woman with an intense focus on academics and a long-term goal of becoming a neuroscientist (神经系统科学家). Her path is charted very carefully each day according to schedule. She meets after school with the Brain Club, a group she started that discusses neuroscience and trades academic papers like baseball cards. It’s the kind of group you would never imagine in high school, which is mature beyond their years and led by their own initiative.

It would seem there was no room in Kate’s schedule for fun, let alone helping others. But then she found out about an elementary school hit hard by the pandemic, then inflation, and now a recession (衰退). It sits in the middle of a working-class neighborhood and most of parents were tired out by working physically demanding jobs from dawn to dark. Most families were doing the best but they could just put a few groceries on the table.

Halloween was approaching, and many of the families didn’t participate because they lacked costumes and couldn’t afford to give out candy themselves. So Kate called the headmaster of the elementary school. She was told the families wanted their kids to have fun on Halloween, but they also needed more books in the home.

So Kate went to work. She began with the Brain Club and then branched out to other clubs. They would sponsor a trick-or-treat event featuring games, candy and book giveaways. It was a huge organizational challenge—one that only a very organized person could handle. So Kate put her smarts to use. She arranged for groups of her fellows to decorate their cars and create games. She found a DJ and rounded up boxes of costumes for the kids. She even got the local police to decorate their cruiser (巡逻车). And she went to work getting kids books donated.

    注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
