21、In this day and age, digital devices (数码产品) have become a significant part of our daily lives. 【1】
But while these devices do make people’s lives easier, there are things to look out for in using these technologies. One is how digital devices seem to be taking over people’s social relationships.
You might have noticed how everyone is engaged in their devices during family gatherings or get-togethers with friends. While they were constantly clicking on their portable devices, real conversations are becoming rare. 【2】
So if you want to spend quality time with each other, you and your friends and family need to sacrifice screen time.
【3】 When you’re hanging out with your friends, make it a policy that all devices should be turned off. Of course, everyone should agree on this ahead of time to avoid any misunderstanding. 【4】 This could also be a house rule when you have dinner with your family or during any other event with relatives.
Another option could be to turn devices on silent mode (模式), just in case someone is expecting an urgent call or important text. It sounds simple, but turning our eyes away from the screen may be more difficult than you think. 【5】 And while we may be able to carry on a conversation while playing a game, this is definitely going to cause a loss to the quality of the time we spend with others.
By removing digital devices in the background, you and your friends can concentrate on what’s really important—spending time with each other.
A.Turning off your digital devices is a good first step.
B.They’re also driving us away from people around us.
C.People can therefore concentrate on what they are doing.
D.Thus, the opportunity to strengthen connections might be disappearing.
E.It seems so natural to reach for your phone or device before doing anything.
F.They are used for a variety of tasks, whether it’s ordering food or booking a flight.
G.And everyone must be willing to obey the rule or else the purpose would be defeated.
22、From sausage rolls to sweets and a coffee with a bin, there were many things that made Greg Robinson smile.
When the father-of-two, who was in his 50s, died suddenly in April 2021, his family’s life was turned upside down.
Greg ran a gift shop in his hometown of Donaghadce. Whether it was at work, walking the dog, with his local flute band or just out in his belayed town, his family said Greg made time for those in need. Now, on the week of his first anniversary, his family shared some of the things that made him smile with their community.
“We wanted to plan something together that allowed us to put our energy into something positive and give us something practical to do, which we knew would have an impact on others,” they told the reporter.
“We knew that by making others smile, we in turn would feel the benefit of that too. We have realised the importance of little things that have made us smile throughout the past year.”
As Greg loved his town and the community, all the gifts were purchased locally. Among them are vouchers (代金券) for a bakery, for some of his favourite sausage rolls, an ice-cream shop where he used to buy a quarter of sweets, and a cafe because “a wee coffee and a bun would have made dad’s face light up with excitement”.
“When someone dies, it is often the case that people are scared to mention the loved one in case it makes you sad, but the journey has taught us that this isn’t the case. The wonderful memories of dad shared by our community bring so much comfort,” his family said.
“We love those times when we hear how dad had impacted their lives, from showing kindness as a teenager at high school, to chatting away to customers in his shop,” they added.
For Greg’s children, they will be forever grateful for their dad teaching them “to focus on the positive parts of the day, looking for ways that we can express gratitude for everyday things”.
【1】What do we know about Greg from the first three paragraphs?
A.Greg was often ready to help others.
B.Greg had a great passion for cooking.
C.Greg earned his living by playing in a band.
D.Greg’s death had little impact on his family.
【2】How did the community react after receiving the gifts?
A.They gathered and comforted Greg’s family.
B.They expressed sadness about Greg’s death.
C.They were still afraid to talk about Greg.
D.They shared good memories of Greg.
【3】What would be the best title for this passage?
A.An Act of Kindness in Memory of Greg
B.Unusual Ways to Thank Greg’s Community
C.A Huge Celebration of Greg’s Family Reunion
D.Special Gifts to Record the Family Life of Greg
23、Warley Woods Community (社区) Trust
Welcome to our third newsletter of the year!
Our main activity for March is our Walk for the Woods fundraising events on Saturday, 17th March, starting any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. We will be walking the distance between Warley Woods and Tipperary. It is indeed a long way — 80 miles. The more people that you can get sponsor you, the more money we can raise to help look after our beautiful woodland. More information is available at our website.
The Sunday volunteers planted two beeches and an oak last week. This was thanks to the money from the Big Tree Plant and to Lisa and Gordon Whitiker, whose friends gave money for the big trees instead of for their wedding presents. Thanks to everyone who took part.
There were 15 volunteers at the Oral History Training Day which was led very ably by Julia Letts. The group will be meeting again and will start to interview the local people who have offered to tell their stories. We are happy to hear from others who would like to be interviewed about their memories of the Woods for the project. If you or anyone you know is interested, please call Viv Cole at the office. This project is financed by Heritage Lottery Fund.
There was a huge response to the Forest Schools activities held at half term. These will be held again during the Easter holidays on the following dates: 4th April from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for over 8s. On 12th April form 10 a.m. to 12 noon, there will be a Teddy Bears’ Picnic for the under 8s. All these must be booked in advance.
Finally, don’t forget the Easter Egg Roll on Bank Holiday, 9th April, staring at 11 a.m. Bring your own hard-boiled and decorated egg to roll down the hill in the woods. The first past the finishing line will win a large chocolate egg! This year, due to popular demand, there will also be an Adults’ Easter Egg Roll following the children’s competition.
We look forward to seeing you all soon, at one of our many events.
