二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Like many people, in terms of socializing, I prioritize making time for my closest friends and family. When it comes to reaching out to people I don’t know as well I often find myself reluctant to engage. This could be a big mistake, though, according to a new study. Having different types of social interactions seems to be central to our happiness — something many of us may think little of.

In a series of surveys, researchers looked at how having a socially diverse network related to people’s well-being. In one survey, 578 Americans reported on what activities they had been engaged in, with whom and for how long over the past 24 hours, while also saying how happy with life they were. The researchers found that people with more diverse social networks were happier and more satisfied with life than those with less diverse networks — regardless of how much time they had spent socializing overall.

“The more you can broaden your social circle and reach out to people you talk to less frequently — like an acquaintance, a friend, a coworker, or even a stranger — the more it could have positive benefits for your well-being,” said the lead researcher Hanne Collins of Harvard Business School.

To further test this idea, she and her colleagues looked at large data sets from the American Time Use Survey and the World Health Organization’s Study on Global Aging and Adult Health. In both cases, they found that when people had a broader range of social interactions, they experienced greater happiness and well-being.

Then Collins and her colleagues did another analysis, using data from a mobile app that 21,644 French-speaking people used to report on their daily social activities and happiness. There, they found that when someone experienced greater-than-average social diversity one week, they were happier that week and the week after.

Why is that? It could be that being with different people contributes to different kinds of emotions, which may be a driving force in our happiness, says Collins. Alternatively, it could be that having a more diverse network allows you to get various social supports when you need it. Whatever the case, Collins hopes her research will inspire people to expand their social networks when they can.

  • 23、These days, Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22 in schools and cities across the United States. There are class projects, programs, tree plantings and many other official events. So, it may be hard to realize that when it first started, Earth Day was considered a radical (激进的) protest.

The modern environmental movement began in the 1960s. It was a time of the generation gap. Young people were acting out against their parents’ way of life. College campuses were rocked by demonstration against the war in Vietnam and other issues. In the middle of this, in 1970, a US senator (参议员) from Wisconsin named Gaylord Nelson camp up with the idea for Earth Day. As he later explained it, the idea was to channel “the student antiwar energy” into the environmental cause.

A lot of young people felt that science was the enemy. This was in spite of the fact that a lot of the people who were warning the public about air and water pollution and animals in danger were scientists. After all, wasn’t it technology- cars, housing developments and factories-that was causing the problem by spreading pollution and destroying nature? Some adults who had thought Earth Day supporters had gone too far made fun of them. They called them “tree huggers”.

Environmentalists were right that technology had to be controlled. Laws and regulations were needed to make sure that both industry and science acted responsibly. Still, science got a bad name. It was as if you had to choose either science or nature. You couldn’t have both.

Lately, though, the situation has changed. We have come to see that science and the environment do not have to be enemies. Technology can be used to protect the environment, not destroy it. Look at all the advances in clean energy that have come from science. Just as Earth Day has evolved, so has our view of science and nature. We know today that we do not have to choose between the two. Instead, we understand that science is one of the main tools we can use to protect the environment. You can be a scientist and a “tree hugger”. That’s big advancement for science and great news for trees.

【1】What can people usually do on Earth Day?

    A.Cut down trees.

    B.Join in a protest.

    C.Launch an investigation.

    D.Complete a class project.

【2】Why did Gaylord Nelson suggest celebrating Earth Day?

A.To encourage young students to protect nature.

B.To direct the public’s attention to environmental changes.

C.To take students’ attention away from antiwar demonstration.

D.To narrow the generation gap between young people and their parents.

【3】What did some adults think of “tree huggers”?

    A.Too extreme.

    B.Quite rational.

    C.Very knowledgeable.

    D.Really considerate.

【4】Which statement is supported by the author?

A.People have to choose either science or nature.

B.Nowadays science can serve to protect the environment.

C.Science has been playing a positive part the whole time.

D.The development of science does harm to the environment.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Last April, Taylor got an unusual package in the mail. The postman carried the box to the door and handed it to Taylor directly. The box was peeping!

“What have you got there?” asked the postman.

“These are my chicks,” said Taylor.

The box was full of six small, fluffy chicks. They were each just one day old. When Taylor opened the box, the peeping got louder. Carefully, Taylor held one yellow chick in his hand. The chick was quiet and then closed its eyes to sleep. Taylor placed it gently under the heat light so it would stay warm. Taylor did this for each chick, and soon they were all sleeping together in their special box.

Taylor kept the chicks in his bedroom with the heat lamp running all day and all night. He would watch the chicks for hours when his homework was finished. Soon the chicks learned to peck at each other and to jump up and down. They also began to grow feathers, first on their wings and then on their tails. When all of their fluff was gone and their feathers in place, it was time to move the chicks to the hen house outside.

The hen house had three doors. There was a small door at the top of a slide that was just for the chickens. There was a big door in the back that was for people. Taylor used this door when he cleaned the hen house or filled the chickens’ food and water dishes. There was also a small door on the side of the hen house that led to the nesting boxes. These were small boxes that the chickens could sit in to lay their eggs. The special door would make it easy for Taylor to pick up the eggs without disturbing the hens.

Taylor checked the nesting boxes every day. Many times he saw the chickens sitting in the boxes, but there were no eggs. It would be many months before the chickens were old enough to lay eggs. Taylor was getting impatient. But his mother always taught him the importance of being patient, so he decided to wait.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
