21、Isaac Taylor, a single dad from Sacramento, California, has five daughters and one son and is taking care of his two young daughters full-time. After they lost their car in an accident, Taylor had no choice but to ride his bike to work. Every day, he had to go through a 16-mile round trip to keep putting food on the table.
His journey was inconvenient and tiring enough, but he even had to walk his children to school after his 10-hour night shift.
Taylor shared that they had been in and out of homelessness for years and this was one of the reasons why he didn’t mind biking for long hours to work and earn money. He had experienced living in motels and churches with his young children. “I’ve been through a lot, so my struggle is just part of getting to the next big thing,” Taylor said.
Eventually, he was rewarded. The leaders of a non-profit organization called Family Promise found out about Taylor’s story, so they nominated (提名) him for a vehicle. They said, “When life gives him lemons, he tries to make lemonade. And he always believes he can make it. That’s worth encouraging.”
It was the same organization that helped Taylor when he was homeless. They helped him secure housing for his family, where they currently live. Now, the organization is helping them again with a more convenient mode of transport.
Recently, Taylor and his family were surprised with a free car, which came with car seats for his children. Taylor couldn’t be happier as he watched his children check their new car with so much excitement.
Taylor cried like a baby when he saw the car. He said, “Tears of joy, Tears of feeling the pain of riding the bike back and forth. It all set in what I went through to get to where I’m now. I am very thankful to everyone who made it possible.”

22、 When I was growing up, Mother’s Day was as important as Christmas.
The energy around the house was always positive, mostly thanks to my father who made sure that his kids appreciated their mother. We would clean the house, and Mum got breakfast in bed in the morning and didn’t have to lift a finger all day. And in the evening, we went to a restaurant for a traditional Mother’s Day dinner.
What I learned from my father over the years, was that no matter what, he always put my mother before himself. He absolutely loved her and never let her forget that.
I maintain my father’s Mother’s Day tradition with my wife. Growing up, I learned that showing affection to the woman you love or who gave birth to you is an important part of life. You see, it goes both ways, and the love you have for your mother comes back to you again and again.
Believing that and feeling it when you can may keep you from being lonely, even if your mum isn’t close by or has passed away. There are a number of us who no longer have a mother in our lives, and truth be told, there are often times when I wish my mum were still here comforting me. So instead, I remember the times she did just that. It makes me smile, and somehow, those memories of a more simple and loving life give me the comfort I’m looking for.
If you are mumless, you too should find a deserving woman in your life and celebrate Mother’s Day with her. If you don’t know anyone, there are plenty of lonely mums in rest homes who would enjoy your company for a couple of hours. The visit will make both of your days, and perhaps our lives, a little bit better.

23、“Suffering” is the word that best describes my first year of teaching. I wasn’t prepared for so much stuff on my plate. I didn’t have a handle on class management, and I left each day feeling extremely worn-out and defeated.
My first year of teaching was spent learning new curriculum (课程), developing personalized learning techniques, modifying (修改) lessons, and analyzing data. I knew this was important work, but I also knew that something was not working. I felt disconnected in my classroom and knew I could do better.
I looked around and saw that there were some teachers who seemed to just take everything in control and really enjoyed what they were doing. I made a decision.
I asked if I could sit in and observe their classes. Over a few months, I observed these teachers around five to seven times, for about 20-30 minutes each time. I also watched teachers interact with students outside of the classroom, on the playground, during lunch, in the hallway, and in gatherings. I paid attention to conversations, comments, and attitudes.
I started to see that the highest priority (首要事情) for these teachers was forming relationships with students, thus everything else would fall into place after that. One teacher played basketball with kids every Friday during lunch. Another sat with kids in the lunchroom a few times throughout the week. There was also a teacher who liked to walk during her lunch and would invite different groups of kids to join her for conversation.
I knew I wanted to model myself after these teachers, so I decided to make a change. Making this shift changed me as a teacher, and it noticeably changed the atmosphere in my classroom. I began to feel inspired at school, and I could see that my students were enthusiastic too. They were more prepared to welcome each of my class ahead.

B.She grasped new curriculum quickly.

A.Knowing well about students’ interests.

C.Building relationships with her students.
D.Encouraging her students to study hard.
【4】Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A.The Way of a New Teacher’s Growth

24、The 2020 Nobel Prize in literature has been awarded to former U.S. Poet Laureate(桂冠诗人)Louise Gluck. The prize committee cited “her unique poetic voice that with plain beauty makes individual existence universal”. Gluck is the first American woman to win the award since Toni Morrison in 1993. Gluck, 77, joins a list of literary giants and previous Nobelists who include, in this century, Canadian short-story master Alice Munro, Chinese magical-realist Mo Yan, etc.
Gluck’s work includes 12 collections of poetry and a few volumes of essays on literary writing. “All are characterized by a striving for clarity(清晰). Childhood and family life, the close relationship with parents and siblings, is a theme that has remained central to her,” Anders Olsson, the chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature, said. “She seeks the universal, and in this she takes inspiration from myths and classical motifs,” Olsson added, citing her 2006 collection Averno, which the committee described as “masterly” for its “visionary interpretation of the myth of Persephone’s (珀尔塞福涅) fall into hell in the captivity (囚禁) of Hades(哈得斯), the god of death”.
Being a professor at Yale and a resident of Cambridge, Gluck also served as U.S. Poet Laureate from 2003 to 2004 and is no stranger to awards. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1993 for her collection of poems titled The Wild Iris, in which “she describes the incredible return of life after winter in the poem Snowdrops,” the Nobel literature committee said Thursday. She also won the 2014 National Book Award for the poem Faithful and Virtuous Night. In 2016, President Obama awarded the National Humanities Medal to Gluck in a White House ceremony.
The publicity-shy Gluck did not immediately issue any comment about the latest honor for her body of work, which spans more than half a century. In a 2012 interview, she acknowledged that prizes can make “existence in the world easier” but did not amount to the immortality(不朽) of a true artist.

Dora is a seven-year-old girl. One day, when she visited Alice’s house she saw a beautiful bird in a cage on the balcony of the house. Alice told her it was her new pet. “How beautiful it is!” said Dora. “I also want to have such a bird as my pet.”
That day when Dora returned home, she told her mother about Alice’s bird. Then she asked, “Mom, can I also get a bird?” “Of course, you can,” said her mother. “But you need to wait because I’ve no time to visit a pet store these days.” Dora agreed. One day, when Dora was back home from school, she saw a cage in the living room.In the cage was a beautiful blue bird. Her mother was standing next to the cage, smiling. “Oh, a bird!” Dora shouted happily. She ran to it and looked at it happily. “It’s a birthday gift for you,” said her mother. “Thank you, Mom. I love it so much!” said Dora excitedly.
The following day, Dora invited her friends to come over to see her bird. All of her friends said it was a really beautiful bird and Dora was very glad to hear that. She and her friends played with the bird for a long time that day.Her friends all wished they could have such a bird as their pet.
Sadly, a few weeks later Dora became sick. The doctor told her parents that she got the flu and had to stay at home. In order not to make her friends sick, her parents asked her friends not to come to play with her. Dora felt very sad. How she wished her friends would come and visit her! But she knew her parents were right. She’d better stay alone. Since Dora had no one to play with, she could only play with her bird. However, she felt that her bird didn’t seem to be happy either.
