  • 21、   I'm terrible at giving myself grace. I'm a perfectionist, and I have unrealistic expectations for myself at times. I can remember simple errors I made. So often, we let perfection dominate our lives without even realizing it. 【1】 And I hope you'll consider doing that, too.

Realize that being burnt out doesn't mean that you're not good at what you do. I want to do my best in everything. The trouble starts when we overwork ourselves. 【2】 That's OK.

Taking a break. Most of all, I hope you prioritize your mental health. Take care of yourself. Be gentle with yourself.

No one is asking you to be perfect. We're all messy humans with strengths and weaknesses. Embrace yours, even when it isn't perfect. When you make mistakes, take responsibility and learn from them. Remember that this isn't the first or the last mistake that you've made. Give in to grace. Something might be a huge issue for me, other people probably won't notice or care.

    【3】

Write it on your heart that whatever you do today is enough. It is easy to emphasize what we've yet to do instead of what we've already done. Yes, there is always room for growth and improvement. 【4】 Maybe you made your bed. Maybe you made it to work on time. Those things might not seem big, but they're still victories.

【5】 If you messed up today, you can try again tomorrow. If you succeeded today, you can try again tomorrow. You have to keep moving on into the rest of your story or you'll miss the train to bigger things than this. Start in your worry or your fear or your joy. Start wherever you are and keep going. Start with grace.

A.Your story isn't finished just yet.

B.That is meant much of our struggle is internal.

C.Then I've realized I need a little bit more rest.

D.You are supposed to aim high and work for it.

E.But there is room to celebrate the little victories.

F.I've decided to change that and give myself grace.

G.Remember that you can be perfect through your efforts.

  • 22、   When old people live with children and other relatives the relationship is not always a happy one. Even old parents and adult children who live separately can have difficulties. Here the generation gap becomes most visible as the needs and interests of the middle-aged and old diverge. Some middle-aged children are so annoyed by the demands of their parents that they make such comments as “Why don’t the old fools die?”

Although such ugly comments exist, a survey conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons reflects a positive attitude by American population towards the old. That survey showed that 69% adult children have weekly contact with their mothers and 20% have daily contact with their mothers. Other surveys have shown that 40% of adults have face-to face contact with their parents once a week.

The 2014 National Survey of Family and Household (NSFH) showed that 78% of adults view their relationship with their mother and father as excellent. Only 0.03% of those surveyed viewed that relationship as “bad”. The remainders were ambivalent in their perception of their parents. This finding is confirmed by much older studies of the same phenomenon also conducted by the National Survey of Families and Households.

Of those surveyed, 66% contacted their parents once a week or more and only 10% did not contact their parents at all. In part, this is a product of the distance at which adult children live from their parents. The 2014 survey showed that 67% of adult children live within 100 miles of their parents and that 38% live within ten miles of their parents. However, a full 20% of those surveyed live 1,000 miles or more away from their parents.

1According to the passage, the relationship between most American old people and their adult children is

    ______.

    A. terrible and distant B. annoying and difficult

    C. great and close D. neither good nor bad

2Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “diverge” in paragraph 1?

    A. differ B. meet C. exist D. transfer

3From the passage, we learn that ______.

    A. generation gap becomes invisible if old parents and adult children live separately

    B. relationship between parents and children has become much better than before

    C. some old parents would rather die because their children are annoyed at them

    D. living far away may lead to people’s less or no contact with their parents

  • 23、“It’s a big hammer to crack a nut.” This is how one angry parent described the recent crackdown(强制措施)by London police on parents who drop their kids off at school by car. Yes, you read that correctly—the very mode of transportation that many American schools insist—the only safe way to deliver kids to school is now being criminalized in the United Kingdom.

The decision to fine any vehicles seen dropping off or picking up kids with in a particular zone of east London comes from city councillors’(议员) long-term efforts to make the area safer and less crowded. They say they’ve been trying for years “to encourage sensible driving and parking”, but in vain. Neighborhood residents complain frequently about their driveways being blocked by illegally parked cars for 15 minutes or more, often while they’re trying to get to work, and the streets are long overcrowded.

Now the rules have changed. Some parents are angry. Angie Baillieul is a mother who made the “big hammer” comment and says the crackdown is “way over the top.” The nearest drop-off point for her six- year-old is now a five-minute walk from the school. Others are happy with the decision, severe though it may seem. Councillor Jason Frost said :

“Traffic has significantly reduced, and more children are now walking to school, which is a great outcome. I would rather have complaints that we are slightly inconveniencing parents than hear that a child had been seriously injured because nothing was done.”

I witness daily the chaos created by these in-town drivers, when I walk my own kids to school. There’s a parking lot overflowing with vehicles and a slow-moving train of cars moving in circles, many filling the air with harmful smokes. Meanwhile, the conversations around child over-weight and the importance of daily physical activity continue to stand out in schools.

【1】Why is Angie Baillieul opposed to the new rule?

A.She is often fined by London police.

B.She will lose her job as a school driver.

C.She has adapted to the American practice.

D.She thinks it adds inconvenience to her son.

【2】Why has the new rule been made according to Jason Frost?

    A.On account of massive complaints.

    B.Because of heavy traffic jams.

    C.Owing to safety concern.

    D.Due to air pollution.

【3】What can be seen after the crackdown is carried out?

    A.Less daily chaos.

    B.Favor from all people.

    C.More over-weight children.

    D.Complaints from neighbors.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.Parents attempt to resist a school rule.

    B.London police cause widespread anger.

C.American schools care about kids7 safety.

D.Different voices are heard on a new traffic policy.

  • 24、   Artificial flesh is growing ever closer to the real thing. Scientists in Australia have now created a new jelly-like material which they claim has the strength and lasting usage of actual skin, ligaments(韧带),or even bone.

“With the special chemistry we’ve engineered in the hydrogel(水凝胶),it can repair itself after it has been broken like human skin can,” explains chemist Luke Connal from the Australian National University. “Hydrogels are usually weak, but our material is so strong it could easily lift very heavy objects and can change its shape like human muscles do.”

Having a wet and soft material with such remarkable properties could be very important for the development of next-generation soft robotics and biomedical devices. Creating a shape-changing hydrogel that has multiple functions has proved an ongoing challenge for scientists, even with natural inspiration from sea creatures, such as jellyfish, sea cucumbers, and Venus fly traps.

While some hydrogels can withstand mechanical stress, others have self-healing properties, and a few more have the abilities to memorize shapes or change colours. As far as the ANU researchers know, no one else has been able to incorporate all these functions into one all-encompassing gel. At least, not at the speed and efficiency they’ve achieved.

Using this material, the researchers made extremely thin films of “flesh” without any breakage.

When these films were heated or cooled, they then changed into different shapes, bending one way or the other before returning back to their original state along with the temperature. If temperature is somehow used as a control, the authors think this gel could one day be moved like an artificial muscle. Researchers are trying to modify their temperature control technology accordingly and make a significant step towards turning this hydrogel into practical use.

1What do you know about the new material according to the text?

A.It looks like the jelly and functions like the robot.

B.It can be easily repaired by scientists after being broken.

C.It is likely to be the most multifunctional hydrogel at present.

D.It can hardly go back to its original shape after heated or cooled.

2What is the author’s attitude towards the future of the dynamic hydrogel?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Neutral.

    C.Negative.

    D.Positive.

3What is the best title for the text?

    A.Getting scientific inspiration from nature.

B.Lifting heavy objects by dynamic hydrogels.

C.Creating a new kind of flesh with chemistry.

D.Enabling artificial robots to heal themselves.

4What will the author most probably talk about in the following paragraph?

    A.The characters of artificial flesh.

B.The creation of the dynamic hydrogel.

C.The shapes and colors of artificial flesh.

D.The application of the dynamic hydrogel.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Matt is ten years old and always nervous about something. When the night sneaks up on him, he lies in bed with the blanket tightly up around his chin. The shadows on the edge of the ceiling make him slide deeper under the cover. And tonight is no exception. That’s why his mother left the light on in the hallway. To frighten away strange noises.

But that’s not all that’s wrong with Matt. He is also very unhappy. In the daytime he watches everyone pass by. He notices adults carry their briefcases on their way to work. He even worries about how hard they have to work. He sees ladies holding umbrellas in case the rain comes in the afternoon. He thinks a hurricane or a terrible rainstorm might come.

Matt always thinks the worst. He even lingers behind other children on their way to school. Some play friendly tricks on each other and tease and holler in loud voices. Not Matt. He has very few friends. In fact if he has to think very hard he can’t remember more than two. They live on the other side of Truro. So he’s pretty much alone.

That day was very special for Matt. He didn’t realize that his grandfather was watching him. He saw Matt go to school and waited for him to come out for lunch. He watched Matt eat by himself on one of the benches in the schoolyard.

It was right near one of Matt’s favorite squirrels. He watched as Matt motioned the squirrel to come across the yard to sit with him. A black blur raced toward him and then jumped up on the bench to take the peanut treat. Grandfather saw this and was glad.

Over the next few days, Grandfather was able to observe the kindness, which Matt had not only for animals but for people as well. When Sally fell off her bike and cut herself, Matt stayed with her until she was fixed up by her mother.

Most of the neighborhood children took part in a Saturday baseball game with their parents. Matt was watching a few children play ball at Victoria Park.

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
