25、Hi,
This is the year 2070. I have just turned 50, but I look like a person of 85. I have serious kidney (肾脏) problems because I don’t have enough water to drink. I’m afraid I don’t have much time left to live. I am already one of the oldest people in this society.
I remember when I was five years old, everything was very different. There were lots of trees in the parks. I could enjoy a shower for half an hour. At that time, women had beautiful hair. Now, we have to shave (剃) our heads to keep them clean without the use of water.
I remember there were “Save Water” warnings in many public places, but nobody paid attention. We believed water would last forever. Now, all the rivers and lakes are either dry or polluted. Water is much more expensive than gold and diamonds.
Without water, almost all factories are closed. Most people lose their jobs. Those who have a job work in desalination (脱盐) factories and are paid with drinkable water rather than with money.
In the past, doctors suggested adults drink eight glasses of water a day. Nowadays, I am only allowed half a glass. Most people are weak. Young people in their early 20s look as if they were in their 40s.
Because there are few trees, we don’t have enough oxygen. We have to pay for air. The air isn’t very fresh, but at least we can breathe. Poor people die young. The average (平均的) life expectancy is 40 years.
When my son asks me about my childhood, I tell him about how pleasant it was to fish in the rivers and how healthy people were. When he asks, “Why is there no clean water now?” I feel guilty. I belong to the generation who turned a blind eye to all the warnings.
I wish this letter could go back in time and that it would make people living in the 2020s truly understand the importance of saving water.
Best,
Natalie

26、
Once there was a magical fairy who had the gift of making wishes come true. Every half-moon she helped one elf(精灵) to achieve one wish. Lately, however, it was hard to decide whose wish would be the next to come true. It wasn’t that there were so many elves who should have a wish achieved for their excellent performance. It was that there were so many who shouldn’t have it at all because of their bad behaviour.
So on the night of the next half-moon she thought of a plan to find a worthy elf. She put on some dirty old clothes and turned herself into a beggar and walked into the magic forest.
Soon she saw an elf holding a cup of hot tea in his hands. “Good day, good friend. I seem to have lost my way,” she said in a raspy voice. “Could you please help me get home?”
“Why me?” The elf blew steam from his cup. “There are lots of other elves around.”
“Okay,” said the beggar. “I’ll find someone else.”
She soon came upon a second elf polishing stones. “Good day, good friend.” The beggar sighed. “I’m a little bit lost. I don’t suppose you could help guide me home?”
“Why now?” said the elf. “I’m busy. Can’t you see?”
“Never mind.” The beggar shook her head.
The third elf she came upon was sleeping under a mushroom. The beggar tapped his shoulder with her cane. “Good day, good friend. I seem to be lost. Could you help me find my way home?”
“Why bother?” The elf yawned. “I’d rather take a nap.” He rolled over and went back to sleep.
The beggar sighed. Then she sat down to think. Soon she heard some noise. She looked up to find an elf riding a little horse. He wore like a prince.
“Silly elf,” the beggar said to herself in a low voice. “He thinks he’s someone special.”
“What’s troubling you, my friend?” he asked.
The beggar said, “Oh, dear prince, no one seems to care about my problems. I’ve asked three elves to help me get home. The first said, ‘Why me?’ The second said ‘Why now?’ The third said ‘Why bother?’ Would you help me?”
The prince stopped for a moment and then said, “Why not?”
The beggar’s eyes lit up. “That’s the most wonderful answer of all!”
“But there’s something you should know,” the prince said, as he helped the beggar up on his horse. “I’m not really a prince. I’m an ordinary elf with extraordinary dreams. That’s why I dress this way.”
“Well, there’s something you should know, too. I’m not really a lost and lonely beggar. I’m really a magical fairy.”
The elf turned around, and sure enough, a fairy was sitting behind him. With a magic wand in her hand, she waved it over his head.
“You are a prince,” she said. “in more ways than one.”

27、Do you have sleeping problems? Is it hard for you to remember or pay attention in class? Do you easily get angry? If your answer is yes, you may be under stress.
Stress is a normal physical response (反应) to things that make people feel worried. In China, 70 percent of the 2,000 students about to take the college or high school entrance examination are under high stress, according to a recent survey by Wuhan University of Hubei province.
Sometimes stress is good for people. It pushes people to do their best, like while getting ready before a big competition or exam. However, too much or long-term stress makes people feel a stress overload (负荷过多), and affects people’s health.
When you feel stressed, there are some ways you can deal with (处理) it. Learning to solve small problems in everyday life is helpful. It can help build confidence to move on to life’s bigger ones. Try saying positive things to yourself, like “I will do the best that I can,” or “I can manage this if I take one step at a time.” That encourages you to work toward your goal. It is also important to relax sometimes.
But if you are under high stress and can’t handle it by yourself, it is also good to ask parents or friends for help. Everyone has stress. Don’t be too shy to tell others that you are having a hard time. They may comfort you or give you some useful advice. You may feel better just from sharing your problems with them.

A.2 B. 3 C.4
【5】Why should we ask parents or friends for help if we are under high stress?
