25、Like many American teenagers, Dick Fosbury wanted to be a professional sportsman but he had a problem — he wasn’t very good at any sport. He didn’t play football very well and although he was very tall he wasn’t a very good basketball player either. He tried running, throwing and jumping, and of all these events, he found that he wasn’t too bad at the high jump. At that time there were two popular styles of jumping over the bar. There was the scissors, where the athlete jumped over using his legs like a pair of scissors, and there was the straddle, where the athlete jumped over face first. He used the straddle. The best height he could jump was 1.63 m. It wasn’t bad but it was a long way from the world record of 2.23 m.
One afternoon he decided to do something completely different. Instead of jumping face first, he turned around and jumped back first. The results were amazing. In a few hours he improved his personal best by 21 cm. He still wasn’t winning any competitions and most people were confused (困惑的) by his strange style. A year before the 1968 Olympics, he was the number 61 jumper in the world, and he only just made it into the USA Olympic team.
When he arrived in Mexico, no one knew his name. As the competition started, the 80,000 people in the crowd began to notice that one of the jumpers had a very strange style. At first, they thought it was funny and laughed each time he jumped over the bar. After nearly four hours, there were only three jumpers left. The crowd weren’t laughing at him anymore — they were cheering him on. The bar was at 2.24 m — a new world record. The other two jumpers knocked it off but Fosbury flew over. The gold medal was his. Dick Fosbury was now famous all over the world and his Fosbury flop changed forever the way that high jumpers jumped.

26、 Henry has recently received a letter from Paul, his pen-friend living in Canada. Here is the letter:
Dear Henry,
Thanks very much for your email, which I want to reply to for ages.
I have finished all my exams. The last one was History. It's extremely horrible because our teacher set a lot of long questions but only a few multiple choice items. I think this subject is difficult because there're lots of facts and dates to remember. I've got a poor memory and I hate to remember things. I'm afraid I won't pass the examination.
So this is the end of Year 8, my second year at secondary school. I did eight subjects in total. The worst were History and French. I find them very boring and difficult to learn. I've already forgotten most of the things I was taught! I need to study hard next year.
I liked Geography best this year, but we only had it twice a week. Our Geography teacher, Mr. Hill, is great. He taught the subject very well. He didn't like to spoon-feed students with lots of facts. He preferred to let us learn independently. He didn't give us any homework the whole year. Perhaps he hated doing homework when he's a student!
We did a project with Mr. Hill about several countries in Europe and Asia. Some of my friends went to the library for photos and I used the internet to search for appropriate information. Mr. Hill gave us a lot of valuable advice. At the end of the term, we gave an oral presentation in front of the class. I'd like to be a pilot, then I could travel and see all those places.
I'm going to visit Tokyo with my three classmates next month. We won't stay in a hotel because my uncle has a large house there. You visited ·Tokyo last year, didn't you? Do you think we need to learn some Japanese before our journey? You've told me that Japanese food is delicious, haven't you? We'll have the opportunity to try it ourselves soon! I've saved money for the journey for nearly half a year. We're all very excited about it.
Please tell me about your year at school. Were your exams easy?
Best wishes,
Paul

27、I am a fan of movies. I spend most of my free time watching movies. There are many cinemas in my town. I know them so well that my friends always ask me to choose a good one for them.
The City Theater has the newest movies and the most comfortable seats. The prices of the tickets are also fair, but it’s the oldest cinema in my town and it isn’t open on Tuesday and Thursday.
The Tianhe Cinema is the most modern (现代的) cinema with the biggest screens. However, the service isn’t so good and people can’t bring food or drinks into the cinema. They can only buy them inside the cinema, and the food and drinks are usually much more expensive than those outside.
The Star Cinema is my favorite. It has the funniest movies and the seats are very comfortable. It is open every day, and if you go there on Monday and Wednesday mornings, you can buy tickets at half price. It also provides (提供) free water and its big hall can hold two hundred people at a time. Of course, the screens are really large. So I will invite my friends to see a film here on my birthday. I usually had a party to celebrate my birthday, but this year I’d like to do something different.
