四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、“What! You, too? I thought I was the only one.” Have you ever said this to someone? If so, you may have ended up becoming friends with this person.

It seems that similarity often helps form friendships. The Greek f philosopher (哲学家) Aristotle once said, “Some define (下定义) it ‘friendship’ as a matter of similarity; they say that we love those who are like ourselves.”

Now, there is some science behind this idea. Scientists from University of California said friends have similar brains, Scientific American reported.

The scientists invited 42 university students to take part in an experiment. Each student watched the same set of videos, which included a comedy f a discussion and a soccer match. Meanwhile, scientists study their brains and recorded their brain activity.

According to their study, friends who watched the same video clips reacted in similar ways. Similar parts of their brains lit up while watching the videos, especially parts that are connected with motivation (动力), learning and memory.

However, people who weren’t friends had different reactions to the same clips.

Having close friends whose brains read like ours “may be rewarding because it makes one’s own values, opinions, and interests strength,” lead scientist Carolyn Parkinson told Business Insider.

But brain similarity is not the only thing that can result in friendship. Scientists from the University of Leipzig, Germany, found that friendship is also based on how physically close you are to someone.

They did an experiment with first-year college students who met in class for the first time. In this experiment, students who sat in neighboring seats were more likely to become friends.

    根据材料内容选择最佳答案。

2The 42 university students in the experiment ______.

A.are all from the University of California

B.were close friends before the experiment

C.all watched the same set of videos

    D.reacted differently from each other

3What did the study of the students’ brains show?

A.They had watched the same video clips.

B.Friends had similar reactions to the same clips.

    C.Watching videos improves one’s memory.

D.It’s good to have friends who react similarly.

4According to the story, what else may help build friendship?

    A.Being fun and helpful.

    B.Studying at the same college.

    C.Having similar appearances.

    D.Being physically close.

    Learn by making mistakes

    从错误中学习

There was once a famous scientist who made several important discoveries. Once he was asked how he was able to be so creative. He replied that it all came from an experience he had with his mother when he was 2 years old. He was trying to take a bottle of milk out of the refrigerator(冰箱). But the bottle was too slippery and he dropped it. The kitchen floor was covered in milk.

When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of shouting at him or punishing him, she said, “Robert, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! I have never seen such a huge puddle of milk. Would you like to play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?”

So he did. After a few minutes, they cleaned it up together. Then his mother said, “This was a failed experiment in how to carry a big bottle of milk with two tiny hands. Let’s go out in the backyard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can find a way to carry it without dropping it.”

The little boy learned that if he held the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson!

The scientist then added that it was at that moment that he knew he didn’t need to be afraid to make mistakes. He learned that mistakes are just chances to learn something new – which is, after all, what scientific experiments are all about. Even if the experiment doesn’t “work”, we can still learn something valuable from it.

【1】The underlined word “slippery” in Paragraph 1 probably means _________.

    A.hard and dirty

    B.wet and smooth

    C.soft and dry

    D.sharp and thick

【2】What did the scientist’s mother suggest doing after they cleaned up the milk?

    A.Playing with water instead.

    B.Cleaning up the yard.

    C.Carrying the milk bottle again.

    D.Making another great mess.

【3】What was the result of the little boy’s “failed experiment”?

A.He learned how to carry the milk without spilling it.

B.He learned that he should never try to carry a bottle of milk with two tiny hands.

C.He learned that carrying a big bottle of milk was impossible.

D.He learned how to play in a huge puddle of milk.

【4】We can know from the passage that the scientist ________.

A.learned much from his early mistakes

B.made many mistakes in his experiments

C.was seriously punished by his mother

D.was afraid of making mistakes again

【5】The passage is probably taken from a magazine about _________.

    A.environment

    B.education

    C.machine

    D.medicine
