25、Looking at the undone homework on his desk always makes David Grey feel uncomfortable. David usually leaves his homework behind and surfs the Internet instead, waiting until the last minute. “But the longer I wait,” says David, aged 15, “the more I worry.”
Everyone procrastinates (拖延) because they want to feel good now. The way to do that is to avoid the task. You can procrastinate on nearly anything, even enjoyable tasks such as planning a vacation. Research has shown that the top tasks young people procrastinate are studying and going to bed. “One big cause for procrastination is that people are afraid of failure, of not meeting others’ expectations,” says Professor Peter Stone.
Some people believe that procrastination will make them thrive. But researchers disagree. “I did a study several years ago, asking procrastinators to finish a task in a certain period of time,” says Stone. “They did worse than non-procrastinators: they made more mistakes and they took longer. But they thought they did better.” Procrastination is usually not going to be good for you. For example, bedtime procrastination can lead to sleeplessness, which in turn can cause many other health problems.
For those who need some drives to stop procrastinating, the best advice might be to take action first. If you’ve been procrastinating on forming a habit of exercise, just put on your walking shoes. A little bit of progress will get you moving.
Next, find something to help you remember to take action. If you want to go to bed at 10:30 pm, you might set a timed dimmer switch (渐暗开关) at 10 pm. When the lights are dimmer, you’ll start going to bed. It works for most people.
Finally, reward (奖励) yourself every time you make progress. For example, after you’ve run 3 km, enjoy your favourite ice-cream. But be careful: it won’t work the other way around.
【1】What is the main reason for people’s procrastination?
A.They want to avoid doing hard work.

C.They need to finish the top tasks first.
D.They plan to do the enjoyable tasks last.

A.think faster
B.worry too much

A.Put on some soft music to help think actively.
B.Enjoy a favourite ice-cream, and then start writing.
C.Search the Internet for enough ideas for a long time.
D.Pick up a pen and write down possible starting sentences.
【4】What is the writer’s main purpose of writing this passage?
A.Explaining why people procrastinate.
B.Telling readers what procrastination is.

27、 The most basic and powerful way to connect with another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our full attention.
When people are talking, there’s no need to do anything but receive them. Just take them in. Listen to what they’re saying. Care about it. Caring is even more important than understanding. It has taken me a long time to believe in the power of saying and meaning “I’m so sorry” when someone is in pain.
One of my friends told me that when she tried to tell her story, people often broke in to tell her that something similar happened to them. For some reason or other, her pain became a story about them. In the end, she stopped talking to most people. It was just too lonely. We connect through listening. When we interrupt someone to let them know that we understand, we move the focus of attention to ourselves. When we listen, they know we care. Many people with cancer can talk about the relief of having someone just listen.
This simple thing hasn’t been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been taught since I was young. I thought people listened only because they were too shy to speak or did not know the answer. A loving silence often has more power to heal (治愈) and to connect than the kindest words.
【1】What is the most important when others are talking?
A.Sharing.
B.Listening.
C.Understanding.
D.Communicating.
【2】The writer’s friend stopped talking to most people because ________.
A.she liked listening
B.she wanted a better listener
C.she wanted more attention
D.she was too shy to talk
【3】What is the main message of the story?
A.We should care deeply about our friends.
B.It’s hard to walk in other people’s shoes.
C.We should learn to be good listeners.
D.We need time to be silent sometimes.
28、用括号里所给动词的适当形式填空。
“Are you listening, Simon?” Simon’s teacher asked. It was a pretty usual question.
Simon shook his head, smiling. He hardly listened or tried hard in class. Talking was so much fun. He wanted to 【1】 (hear) rather than listen.
“Listen, and you 【2】 (learn) something.” Mrs. Jacobs tried every day, but Simon never paid attention.
That evening, his throat really hurt. The next morning, when he opened his mouth to say “Good morning”, nothing came out but croak (低哑声).
Simon’s mother looked at him. “Honey, you 【3】 (lose) your voice.”
“Can I stay home?” He tried to ask, but words didn’t come out. Instead, his mother checked him for a fever and decided it was good for him to go to school, even if he couldn’t talk.
When he got to school, Mrs. Jacobs said “Hello” to him, and he just 【4】 (nod). When his friends asked him what TV shows he watched last night, he just shrugged (耸肩). By the time the bell rang for class, almost everyone 【5】 (look) at him as if he’d grown a third eye.
Penny raised her hand. “Mrs. Jacobs, why isn’t Simon talking?”
“He never stops 【6】 (talk).” Richard said worriedly.
Everyone started talking at once. They were excited, worried, and surprised.
Simon sat in class bored. He watched them talk to each other as if the teacher wasn’t there, but he couldn’t even do that. In math class he could hold up fingers if the answer was less than 10, but that wasn’t fun. He decided 【7】 (try) to pay attention.
He could do his homework that night. It gave him TV and game time with his work all done.
The next day, even though his voice was coming back, he stayed quiet again. The third day, he could talk fine, but he 【8】 (listen) and raised his hand to speak.
What a difference that one day made!
29、Rich or poor, young or old, we all have problems. We can easily become unhappy we solve our problems. about our problems can affect how we do things at school or at home. So how do we deal with our problems?
Most of us have probably been angry our friends, parents or teachers. Perhaps they said something you didn’t like, or you felt they were unfair. Sometines, people can stay angry for years about a small problem. Time goes by, and good friendsships may .
When we’re angry, however, we are usually the ones affected. Have you ever seen young children playing together? But they fight very soon, and decide not to talk to each other. However, this usually doesn’t for long. They become good friends again. This is an important for us: we can solve a problem by learning to forget.
Many students often complain about school. They might feel they have too much work to do sometimes, or think the rules are too . We must learn how to change these “problems” into “challenges”(挑战). As young adults, it is our duty our best to deal with challenge with the help of our teachers.
By comparing yourself to other people, you will find your problems are not so . Think about Stephen Hawking, for example, a very clever scientist. He can’t walk or even speak, but he regards his many physical problems as unimportant. Now he is known a great scientist in the world. We are probably quite healthy and smart. Let’s not worry about our problems. Let’s face the challenges instead.
