24、Iceland lies in the North Atlantic Ocean. It lies between 63°24′ and 66°33′ N and between 13°30′ and 24°2′ W. It is the second largest island in Europe. It is close to the Arctic Circle(北极圈)yet in fact only one of its northerly islands lies inside. The country has a total area of 103,000 square kilometers and a coastline of about 6,600 km. The island is 300 km wide from north to south, and 500 km across from west to east.
From 1262 to 1944 Iceland was ruled first by Norway and then by Denmark. Centuries of foreign rule, and such things as volcanoes(火山)and the weather, made life very difficult at times for the Icelanders, there was lots of hard work and little change. The situation began to improve during the nineteenth century. Then in 1944 Iceland became an independent republic(独立国家);since that time it has become a quite rich country where the people enjoy having cars, modern houses and lots of electrical equipment. If you look at the kind of products that Iceland sells to other countries today—fish, meat, wool and so on—it’s easy to see that both the sea and the land are important to Icelanders. This has been true in fact since the time of the first Icelanders—Vikings from Norway who arrived in AD 874.
Some things in the lives of the Icelanders have hardly changed—the Icelandic language, for example, 700 years ago the stories called Sagas were first written down, these can still be read in the old language without much difficulty by Icelandic speakers today.

A.To invite people to come and visit Iceland.
B.To introduce something about Iceland.

A.It is the second largest island in Europe.
B.Great changes have taken place in Iceland since the nineteenth century.
C.The Icelandic language changed a lot over the years.
D.The sea and the land are important to Icelanders.
25、People with pets at home often think they know a lot about their pets. But that is not real. Most of them often don’t know when their pets are nervous(紧张).
There is a new study from scientists. It finds that dogs are nervous when they hear home noises from a vacuum(吸尘器). And many pet owners don’t know this.
“Ginny was a very friendly dog. But one day she looked nervous, and even stopped eating for a few days,” says Grigg, one of the scientists. “Later, I found it was because of the noises from a smoke detector(烟雾报警器) in the house. When the noise stopped, Ginny became normal(正常) soon. Then I thought this was interesting and started to study it.”
The scientists asked 368 dog owners about their pets’ reactions(反应) to home noises. They also watched many videos online. They found that high-frequency(频率) noises like the noises from a smoke detector can make dogs nervous more easily than low-frequency noises like the noises from a vacuum. “But the feelings to noises are different, so not every dog is afraid of these noises,” says Grigg.
Are cats also afraid of home noises? Scientists are not sure. That will be another study soon. Now they only hope the study on dogs will help owners know more about what home noises would do to their dogs, so they can do something to help with the problem.

27、 On a windy day in June, Fourth Class took the train to Chinatown. We had begun to learn Putonghua and our teacher said this excursion would let us practice our language skills and learn more about Chinese culture.
We entered Chinatown through the arched (拱形的) entrance gate with red painted wooden pillars (柱子) . Big stone lions sat on each side. Then I noticed that the street signs were written in both Chinese and English. I photographed the sign for Hay Street.
The next place we visited was the Chinese Garden of Friendship which was very peaceful. There were waterfalls, hidden stone paths and a beautiful teahouse. We had a wonderful time there.
At last it was time for our Chinese lunch. We entered a big restaurant that had red lanterns hanging from the roof and red dragons on the walls. The waiters greeted us in Putonghua and we answered them in Putonghua. We were shown how to use chopsticks and how to choose from the menus with Chinese writing.
At 2:30 we left Chinatown. We were all very tired. On the train, our teacher told us her experience in China. She was just back from seeing the Great Wall of China. It's like a long dragon winding its way. We were told it is the longest wall in the world. As we were listening, one student, who I couldn't name, fell asleep on the train and snored loudly. His face turned red when he woke up!
