24、Six months, five continents(大洲), 41 countries, 52 thousand kilometers. At the age of 19, Zara Rutherford had broken two Guinness World Records(吉尼斯世界纪录). She’d became the youngest female(女性) to fly alone around the world and the first woman to do so in a microlight aircraft(超轻型飞机).
The Belgian-British teenager landed in Belgium on Jan 20, 2022. “It’s just really crazy,” she told CNN.
With two pilots for parents, Rutherford started learning to fly at 14 and got her first license in 2020. To realize her dream of flying around the world alone, she sold her car to pay for the trip. She also found some sponsors(赞助者). One of them is Shark Aero. The company provided her with a two-seat microlight.
In August 2021, when everything was ready, Rutherford set off. She planned to finish her trip in three months. Instead, it took nearly half a year because of bad weather and expired(过期的) travel documents(证件).
The most difficult part of the trip was flying over Russia’s Siberia region(地区). “It was -35℃ on the ground and -20℃ in the air ... If the engine(引擎) were to stop, I’d be hours away from rescue(救援) and I don’t know how long I could have lived,” Rutherford said. She also faced storms, wildfires(山火), typhoons(台风) and broken parts of her aircraft.
Rutherford, now 20, hopes her flight will encourage more girls to choose careers(职业) in aviation(航空业). “If you don’t try and see how high you can fly, then you’ll never know,” Rutherford told CNN.

26、 When I was in the third grade, I watched a video that recreated the discovery of King Tutankhamen’s tomb (墓). I remember Howard Carter peering through a narrow hole in the tomb with a candle. A workman asked what he could see: “Wonderful things!” Carter said. From that moment. I knew what I wanted to do with my life.
Today, I’m lucky to work as an archeologist (考古学家). I study the lives of people who lived in Egypt’s Nile Delta. It’s exciting work. Sometimes you find something that was buried three thousand years ago. Holding a piece of history is an amazing feeling. So I decided what I wanted to be at the age of nine, and I made it happen. Seems easy, right? Not quite! The road wasn’t easy. I did my studies — university, then a PhD. But along the way I was told many things: I was too young, I wasn’t qualified, I should get married and have kids. I also needed money, so I applied for six grants (津贴). The first five replies I got said no. Six months later, the last reply came. This time it was yes. Finally. I could start my own excavation (发掘).
For anyone thinking about a career, I would say: Never give up. If you want to do something, keep trying. If people tell you no, use that — it will push you. At the beginning, it hurts. But the next no hurts a little less. It makes you stronger and actually helps you.
Second, focus on your goals. And I stress yours, you don’t have to follow other people. If they say something has never been done, make it happen. You may be the first to do it! There are always challenges, but you overcome them in the end.
【1】What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

27、
I often ride bikes around Australia and am about to cycle the Nullabor to raise money for multiple sclerosis (MS, 多发性硬化症). I have MS myself, but cycling is a pain-free activity for me. I feel quite relaxed after cycling. But a not-so-kind person stole all of my bikes when I was traveling, which made it impossible for me to continue cycling at that time.
The human kindness I have met since this happened was so amazing. A kind lady bought a mountain bike for me to continue riding. A gentleman gave another bike to me to continue training on roads. It was almost impossible to find a bike in my size because the bike I had before was very short and required an extra-small frame (框架). And there is a bike supply and demand issue (供需问题). My hometown got behind me to raise some money. With this money, I have bought a bike that is just the right size for me.
So far, people have offered me places to stay, welcomed me into their warm homes and made sure I have enough water when riding long distances (距离). They also put money in my hands in the street to help me reach my goal. The stolen bikes turned into an interview with ABC Radio and papers in Tasmania.
My point is that there are so many good and kind-hearted people out there. My experience is that people are mainly kind and beautiful. I could never doubt (怀疑)the fact that the world holds more good and kind people than unkind people. That, in itself, is hope! It won’t be long now before I hit the road again and do my bit to give back kindness.
