25、 Imagine this: Your parents go away on business, but you have to stay at home alone.
Would life be as easy as when your parents are around? Would it be a perfect holiday for you?
“I can feed myself with tomato and egg soup, but that’s all. I think many of my classmates are the same. We wouldn’t know what to do, or how to look after ourselves.”said Zheng Chenyu. “And I’d forget things easily. I’d probably watch television and burn the soup.”
“Now parents do almost everything for us. We’re very lazy in housework,” she said.
Most teenagers only have time for their homework. They don’t learn any life skills until they go to college. However, Sima Yige doesn’t think so.“ I think I’d be all right. I wouldn’t just eat sandwiches or fruit. I know how to cook some simple dishes because my mom showed me, ” the 13-year-old boy said. In his opinion, many teenagers depend too much on their parents, and there is much more to learn than cooking, like“ tidying up your room or even dressing yourself properly”. For most teenagers, it wouldn’t be a holiday at all.

Dear Aunt Aggie, I’m having a problem with my classmate, Rena, at school. The other day I wrote an email to another classmate, Beth, in which I said some things about Rena that perhaps weren’t very nice. Unluckily, when Beth was writing back to me, she accidentally forwarded (无意间转发) the message to Rena! Now Rena is really angry with me and won’t talk to me, and Beth is unhappy as well. She’s said sorry to me a hundred times already, but the harm is done. I feel bad. How do I get Rena to forgive (原谅) me? What should I do? Joe |
Dear Joe, This problem is more common than you might think! Email is very useful, but also very dangerous, as you don’t know where your message might end up! First of all, you should say sorry right away to Rena. Explain that it was a mistake, and that you didn’t mean to hurt her feelings. It may take time for her to be able to forgive you, but that’s up to her. Then you might want to do something nice for her. Perhaps send her some flowers to show that you’re truly sorry. Also, you should remember that old saying: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” And good luck! Aggie |
【1】What is Joe’s problem in the first email?
A.Joe made Rena unhappy and he felt very sad.
B.Joe received a wrong email from Rena and became angry.
C.Joe’s classmate, Beth, sent Rena an email and made her unhappy.
D.Joe’s friend, Beth, is unhappy because Joe sent her an angry email.
【2】What does the underlined sentence mean in the second email?
A.Because you don’t know who the email is for.
B.Because you never know where the message is from.
C.Because you don’t know where your email was written.
D.Because you can never know who will get your email at last.
【3】From the emails, we can infer (推断) that ________.
A.Joe, Rena and Beth study at different schools
B.Beth didn’t forward the message to Rena
C.Joe has already said sorry to Rena
D.Rena hasn’t forgiven Joe yet
27、People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I’ll share some of my experience. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell you is that, once you’re started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you ’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say then in English?”At first, it might be with simple words or phrases ,but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I am in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It is amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I did not want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I’d try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.
