二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Andrew started his job four years ago at a job search company Glassdoor.com, when he worked in a computer programming language called Stata. Then other programming languages appear, and he has had to continually learn new skills. He says the ever-changing universe of work requires employees to be critical thinkers and fast to adapt to the new environment.

People need to learn new technologies and apply their skills quickly and regularly. When companies hire new workers, they are not always looking for knowledge of a certain software, but soft skills like problem solving, effective communication and leadership. They also may want candidates who show a willingness to keep learning new skills.

Students may believe that studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics, known as the STEM fields, will easily lead to a good first job. But employers are telling colleges: you are producing engineers, but they do not have the skills we need. That means finding new ways to solve a problem is more important than using established steps to do so.

To get students ready, some colleges and even high schools, are working on building critical thinking skills. One example of this is at the private Westminster Schools in Atlanta, Georgia. For three weeks in January, students either get jobs or go on trips. The experience gives them a better sense of what they might do in the future.

Career offices at universities also place a lot of importance on interview skills, teaching young people more than writing an effective resume and dressing well. They have to learn how to perform best on video and phone interviews, and how to deal with new ways of being chosen for a job.

1What does the job at Glassdoor.com require Andrew to do?

    A. To apply what he learned in college to his work.

    B. To keep learning new knowledge to keep up.

    C. To have a good command of several languages.

    D. To keep changing jobs for different skills.

2What quality do companies require of new workers?

    A. Skills at solving problems and effective communication.

    B. Willingness to stop work and go for further education.

    C. Tricks at managing a whole department or research team.

    D. Readiness to stay behind after work and work overtime.

3What message do employers convey to colleges?

    A. Interview skills and effective resume are necessary for students.

    B. Good basic knowledge in related field is essential for students.

    C. Many new ways of looking for graduate employees are popular.

    D. College students should have the skills for solving problems.

4Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

    A. New Skills Are Required of Employers

    B. Traditional Education Limits Job Chances

    C. Tomorrow’s Jobs Require Soft Skills

    D. What You Learn Today Decides Your Future

  • 22、A parent posted on Reddit last week that her son’s school is now “zero waste”. In order to save money on the trash(垃圾) service, school leaders have taken away the trash cans. She wrote, “They are not taking any other method to reduce waste; they are just preventing the children from using the trash can. All their lunch waste must go home with them in their lunch box.”

Reactions were quick and fierce, with 333 people commenting on the thread that is now closed. Some supported the original(最初的) poster, saying they’d tell their kids to throw the trash on the floor if trash cans weren’t provided. Most, however, challenged the parent's perspective, telling her that this isn't a bad thing and sharing their own experiences of schools and day camps that have been zero waste for years.

One advised, “Get a lunch bag and then pack small bread sticks, cut fruits, pasta salads etc and then use a reusable bag for sandwiches.”

Another said, “My kid's school is zero waste. Always has been. They bring their lunch waste home. It's never been a thing. If anything, it makes me a bit more mindful of how school lunches are packed.”

My children's school has always told us to pack waste—free lunches, but trash cans are still being used. I do think, though, that their presence is a crutch(拐杖) of sorts. Until we are truly forced to fight with the waste produced by our habits, we won't be active to change them.

By forcing kids to take their trash home, the school is not creating a real problem for kids and parents, just an inconvenience, because they all have trash cans at home. But the movement does need to start from the bottom, perhaps within individual classrooms at first, before being put upon tired, overworked parents.

【1】How did the parent feel when writing the post?

    A.Confused.

    B.Angry.

    C.Satisfied.

    D.Hopeful.

【2】What does the underlined word “perspective” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Patience.

    B.Behavior.

    C.Opinion.

    D.Intelligence

【3】What advice is mentioned in the passage?

A.Taking the right amount of food.

B.Sharing the lunch with other students.

C.Thinking of good ways to pack the lunch.

D.Encouraging children to eat up the lunch.

【4】Why does the author think of the trash cans as a crutch?

A.People can't live without trash cans.

B.They are of great use in our daily life.

    C.They help people develop a zero—waste lifestyle.

D.Their presence allows the possibility of wasting.

  • 23、Doctors have a new weapon in the battle against obesity (过度肥胖) a talking plate that tells people not to eat too quickly. The Mandometer monitors the amount of food leaving the plate, and tells users, “Please eat more slowly.”

The £1,500 Swedish device is to be used in a National Health Service plan to help hundreds of obese families lose weight. It comes in two parts a scale placed under the plate and a small computer screen showing a graphic(图表) of the food gradually disappearing as the user eats. A red line on the screen shows the user’s eating speed, while a blue line shows a healthy rate. If the user eats too fast, the red line angles away from the blue one, warning him or her to ease off. If the lines deviate (偏离) too much, the computer voice comes on, and the  screen flashes the message “Are you feeling full yet?” to remind users to think about whether they have had enough.

Britain has an increasingly serious obesity problem, with one in four adults and one in seven children classed as obese. After a recent trial using the device, experts believe teaching obese people to eat more slowly will help them know when they are full. Around 600 families with at least one obese parent and child (aged five or older) were targeted in the project by Bristol University, along with GPs and nurses.

Professor Julian Hamilton-Shield, who is leading the plan, says obese children and adolescents using the Mandometer ate from 12 to 15 percent less per meal at the end of the 12-month trial. Six months after they stopped using the device they still ate less, and continued to lose weight. “It will be a powerful tool to help families retrain their eating habits,” he says.

【1】 What does the red line on the screen show?

    A. A healthy rate of eating. B. Too much food is left.

    C. The user’s eating speed.   D. The user is full.

【2】 What can we infer from the text?

    A. The device can help obese people form good eating habits.

    B. Every family will have such a device soon.

    C. This device is the best way to lose weight.

    D. People will no longer worry about obesity.

【3】 The underlined phrase ease off is closest in meaning to ______.

    A. to become less tense   B. to eat more slowly

    C. to remove gently and slowly   D. to stop

【4】 Which of the following is TRUE, according to the text?

    A. 25% of children are obese in Britain.

    B. One in seven adults is obese in Britain.

    C. Children using the Mandometer ate less after the trial.

    D. Six months after the trial, obese people are still eating a lot.
