21、When I worked on the manufacturing shop(车间)floor, we rarely saw plant managers. Except for one. He often walked through the plant. He checked out product quality. He stopped for a brief word—usually no more than a "hello." He wasn't outgoing. He didn't display any of the qualities typically associated with a "leader." Yet we liked him.
In a 1992 University of Pittsburgh study, researchers had four women attend a number of different classes. Their attendance varied: one woman might attend every class; a different woman might attend only a few. What didn't vary was their behavior. None of the women spoke in class or spoke to other students.
At the end of the term, students were asked which woman they liked best. Who "won"? Women who attended the highest number of classes. According to the researchers, "Mere exposure had weak effects on familiarity, but strong effects on attraction and similarity." Or in non-researcher-speak: If I see you frequently, I naturally like you more. That's the power of showing up.
Knowing someone will show up in the future also matters. In a 1967 University of Minnesota study, researchers gave study participants profiles of two people and told them that one would be a partner in future discussion groups. When asked, the participants said they liked their future partner more. Even though the profiles were almost identical.
Want your team or your customers to like you more? Show up. Drop in. Drop by. Send a brief note. Make a quick phone call. You don't have to say or do much. Then, be consistent in your behavior. In time, people will expect you to drop in or drop by, whether in person or virtually. Anticipating future contact will make them like you more.

22、Last summer, more than 12,000 fans packed London’s Wembley Arena. Thousands more watched online. They shouted and cheered. Were they watching soccer? No, they were watching esports, or competitive PC gaming. Millions of people in Britain play PC games for fun. Some of them have become professionals, playing games as their full-time job. The prize at the Wembley event came to 3 million pounds.
But are esports really sports? Are the players athletes? It’s easy to say, “No way.” After all, professional gamers don’t need to run, jump or throw a ball. At the moment, Britain government considers esports as a kind of game, not as a sport.
It’s not easy being a professional gamer, though. They practice for 10 or more hours a day, five or six days a week. They do exercises like typing something and then trying to type it faster and faster. They also study videos of other players and plan ways to beat them.
Many people who play games also enjoy watching them. They often watch games on video sites like Twitch and YouTube, and in Britain there’s even a TV program showing esports 24 hours a day. Matches can be exciting to watch. Just like in other sports, there are close games, last-minute victories and creative strategies. Sometimes online viewers can interact with the players through messaging.
But many people think that esports are sports. They say that players do need physical skills, especially hand-eye working together, quick reaction, accuracy (精准性) and timing. If darts and snooker are considered as sports, then perhaps esports should be too. In fact, the governments of China and South Korea do consider esports as sports, and gamers will soon be able to compete for medals at the 2022 Asian Games.
Even if esports are not important and popular or regarded as a sport in your country or place at the moment, they probably will be soon.

23、Think fast! Translate this conversation into formal English: “Wassˆ?” “N2M, U?” If you figured it out right away, you are probably among the 60% of kids online who use instant messaging. Instant messages are typed so fast that users don’t slow down to spell out words. As a result, new word abbreviations (缩写) and instant massaging slang are being invented faster than a high-speed Internet connection.
Nearly half of all online teens believe that the Internet has made their friendships better. It’s a quick, easy way to keep in touch. Steven Mintz, 13, prefers instant messaging to the phone “because I can talk to more people at once.” Chatting online is also a good way to keep up with friends who live far away. Kids don’t have to worry about running up the telephone bill.
Instant messaging is not always a friendship builder. Sometimes, kids use it to air angry or hurt feelings. Such kids aren’t necessarily trying to be mean. Often, it’s just easier to say something online than in person. Oliver Davies, 11, California, says that with instant messaging, “I can express my emotions more easily, without having the guilt of saying it face-to-face.”
Many parents and teachers think kids’ instant messaging habits are taking away from more important things. Some parents say that when their kids are waiting for a beep (哔哔声), it’s hard for them to stay focused on homework. Teachers get upset when Internet slang, such as “u” and “r”, show up in kids’ writing.
Kids’ safety is also a concern. Staying connected is fine, but an online friendship with a stranger is not. Many parents monitor (监视) instant messages, either by limiting time online or by keeping the computer in a common area.
Researchers who study kids and the Internet say instant messaging isn’t getting in the way of real life. They note that new technology often causes old, exaggerated (夸张的) fears. “It’s similar to what was said in the 1980s about video games and in the 1960s about television,” says Nalini Kotamraju, an expert on how kids use technology to communicate.
“Language has always changed, and it always will,” Naomi Baron, a professor of linguistics said. “It must change as the things we do and things we encounter change.”
