21、Throwing a rock into a calm body of water creates a ripple (波纹;波浪般起伏) effect across the calm water, until those ripples reach the edge of the water. It also explains how our actions affect other people. When we show love and kindness to others, the powerful effect of our actions spreads out further. The same goes for dislike or anger. It is important that we should begin being more thoughtful about our actions and words.
Love can reach so many different people, making it a powerful force in the world. Anger has the same effect. The world would be a better place if we learn to love and show kindness to others. We can’t always control what others do, but we have power over our actions and contribute our own ripples into the world.
We don’t always know the effect that our actions have on others. There will be times when you are angry. Some people may feel a sense of short-lived relief when they throw a rock of anger into the world, but that feeling usually changes into shame and anger towards oneself eventually. Anger hurts yourself and the world in the meanwhile. I suggest walking away for a while when you feel angry. Spreading love and kindness not only has positive effects on others but also on ourselves. You get to enjoy it, and the people around you can enjoy it too. Personally, I feel my best when I help others and I feel my worst when I’ve made someone upset. When we put kindness into the world, we’ll feel thankfulness, sympathy, and understanding. Let my kindness guide my decisions and this allows love and connection to ripple out into the world.
It’s important that we take care of ourselves when we show love and kindness for others. When we love ourselves, we’re then able to love others. And when we let this love and kindness guide our decisions, the world will become more beautiful.

22、 As to the question what is a best age to learn a language, many would rush to the conclusion that it’s best to start young. Though it is true to some extent, now science offers a much more complex view of how our relationship with languages evolves over a lifetime-and there is much to encourage late beginners.
Broadly speaking, different life stages give us different advantages in language learning. As babies, we have a better ear for different sounds s as toddlers(幼儿), we can pick up native accents with astonishing speed. As adults, we have longer attention spans and important skills like literacy that allow us to continually expand our vocabulary, even in our own language. And a wealth of factors beyond ageing—like social circumstances, teaching methods, and even love and friendship—can affect how many languages we speak and how well.
“Not everything goes downhill with age, “says Antonella Sorace, a professor of developmental linguistics and director of the Bilingualism Matters Centre at the University of Edinburgh. She gives the example of what is known as “explicit learning”: studying a language in a classroom with a teacher explaining the rules. “Young children are very bad at explicit learning, because they don’t have the cognitive(认知) control and the attention and memory capabilities,” Sorace says. “Adults are much better at that. So that can be something that improves with age.”
A study by researchers in Israel found, for example, that adults were better at grasping an artificial language rule and applying it to new words in a lab setting. The scientists compared three separate groups: 8-year-olds, 12-year-olds, and young adults. The adults scored higher than both younger groups, and the 12-year-olds also did better than the younger children. They suggested that their older participants may have benefited from skills that come with maturity—like more advanced problem-solving strategies—and greater linguistic experience. In other words, older learners tend to already know quite a lot about themselves and the world and can use this knowledge to process new information.
【1】What is the correct understanding of the underlined sentence in paragraph 1?

A.They have already known quite a lot about the words.
B.They draw upon their existing knowledge to help.
C.They have been taught the way to learn a language.
D.They are better at learning artificial language rules.
【4】What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To compare and evaluate. B.To examine and assess.
C.To argue and discuss. D.To inform and explain.
23、Loch Ness, the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles, is twenty- four miles long and at one point, one mile wide. It has an average depth of four hundred and fifty feet and at times drops close to a thousand. It is cold and murky (混沌的), with dangerous currents. In short, it is the perfect place to hide a monster from even the sharpest eyes of science.
The Loch Ness Monster, also called Nessie, is supposedly living in this area. The earliest recorded sighting of the Loch Ness Monster was in the biography of Life of St.Columba by Adamnan in the year A.D.565. The monster apparently attacked a man who was swimming in the River Ness.
The monster didn’t make headlines again until August 27, 1930, when 3 fishermen reported seeing a creature with 20 feet long approaching their boat, throwing water in the air. In 1933, after a new road was built along the edge of the Loch, the number of reports rose suddenly. Early in 1934, Author Grant, a young student, was out on his motorcycle one evening when he almost ran into the monster as it crossed the road. Grant’s description of the thing — small head, long thin neck and tail with a big body, seemed to match the appearance of the plesiosaur (蛇颈龙), an aquatic (水生的) type of dinosaur that has been extinct for 65 million years.
The Loch Ness Investigation Bureau was formed in 1962 to act as a research organization for information about the creature. Even now, efforts have continued to find the monster. A great deal of information was discovered about the Loch, but there isn’t any yet to produce any specific evidence of a monster.
Skeptics (怀疑论者) argue that the water in the Loch is too cold for a plesiosaur to live in. They also argue that an air-breathing animal, like a whale or seal, would spend much more time on the surface than the creature seems to, and would be spotted more often.
Some scientists have wondered if the sightings might be caused by an underwater wave which is known to sometimes occur in deep, long, and cold lakes, like Loch Ness. Such a wave might push debris (废弃物) to the surface that might look like a strange animal. However, none of these is identified.

24、 My name is Deirdre Veneracion and I am a paraglider (滑翔伞) pilot.I’ve been paragliding since I was 11.
My dad and I arrive at our local fly site on a June morning. We meet our instructor and spend the first 20 minutes watching the wind cycles.I go through my pre-flight steps and turn on my radio. At last, I take a step and feel the ground under me fall away.I feel the pressure of my weight on the canopy (伞衣).
After 15 minutes of playing with the wind, my father radios me from the place where he is about to take off.“How is the wind?” “Perfect!” I say.Dad takes off behind me.
I have done almost 100 flights and yet every flight amazes me just as much or even more than my first flight.I love the unpredictability of each flight.Every flight is different. After 15 minutes, I decide to land.
Now, I’m over a rice field. It is a much smaller landing than most landing zones but it’s possible.Out of nowhere, I feel my canopy becomes unstable. It loses pressure and falls directly in front of me.I am falling.I have butterflies in my stomach.I pull my brake line, in the hope that my wing will get pressure again but it doesn’t.I look towards my dad and see that he is also in trouble. It’s as if we were inside a washing machine being thrown up and down.I won’t make it to the landing zone in front of me.On my right is a narrow stream with hardly any water in it.I make my decision: The narrow stream is my best chance of landing safely.
As I touch down, I check on my dad and am glad to hear that he is fine.Local villagers come to check on me but, surprisingly, I am uninjured.
This is one of those times when we are reminded that no preparation can prevent Mother Nature from surprising us.
