1. ★★★★★
My favorite shoes! I’ve been to many conferences where my business fellows have told me how much they like my shoes. Just wearing them makes me feel more calm and content in the office. I recommend them to all of my co- workers, and I own a pair of each color.
2. ★
These are the worst shoes I have ever worn! The leather came off after only one week, and everybody thought they were ugly. The bottom of the shoes made everything slippery. My employer fired me because he hated them! From then on, I will only wear Brand X shoes !
3. ★★★
These shoes do exactly what shoes are supposed to do. There isn’t anything too special about them. In the morning, I put them on and go to work. They look delightful enough , and they are quite durable. I will probably buy another pair.
4. ★★★★
These shoes are my most cherished(珍爱的) possession. I met my bride while buying a pair of these shoes. She was the saleswoman at the store I bought them at , and after she sold me three pairs, I asked her for her phone number and we started dating. Soon after that, we were engaged. We are getting married this afternoon, and I couldn’t be happier.

22、 Our Library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification system(Dewey for short) to arrange books and other resources on the shelves so you can locate them easily. We’re going to show you how to use Dewey to find a book at any Library site.
Once you’ve searched for your item on Library Search, you’ll see something like this:
Globalization and education: critical perspectives Nicholas C Burbules; Carlos Alberto Torres 2000; ISBN0415920485(hbk); ISBNO41520477(pbk); ISBN97804 15920483; ISBN9780415920476 ◆Available at Main Library Blue Area Floor 1(370. 193 B174) Find in Library Details Reviews and tags |
The part in the brackets is the bit we’re interested in. What do these numbers next to the book’s location mean? The numbers shown are a “shelfmark”. You’ll find one of these on every book in the Library—a lot of customers find this confusing at first but if you break down the information into three sections, it’s easier to understand.
1. The numbers in front of the decimal point indicate the subject area(in this case 370). Look for this number first.
2. Next, look for the number after the decimal point(in this case 193).
3. Now look for the letter(s)and number(s). Letters are usually the initial letter(s)of the author’s name(in this case, Burbules).
Sometimes, you will see extra letters before the shelfmark. This shows that a book is part of a collection within the Library. For example: M. E. 279. 32R29 is part of the Middle Eastern collection. Find the collection first, before looking for the number.
【1】What can help us find a book at the Library site easily on Library Search?
A.Its title. B.Its shelfmark. C.Its publication time. D.Its author’s name.
【2】What does the letter “R” in “M. E. 279. 32R29” stand for?
A.The book’s location area. B.The name of a collection.
C.The author’s family name. D.The shelf’s alphabetical order.
【3】How can “M. E. 279. 32R29” be broken down according to the passage?
A.M. E. /279/32R/29 B.M. /E. /279. 32/R29
C.M. E. /279. 32/R/29 D.M. E. /279/32/R29
23、Hayao Miyazaki, the 72-year-old Japanese master of fantasy animation (奇幻动画), one of the most respected animation directors in the world, announced his retirement on September 6, after the recent release of his new film The Wind Rises.
Miyazaki’s vision(视野) has remained unique throughout his many films over the past thirty years. The worlds he creates—the valley of the wind, the castle in the sky, and so many—are so special, so attractive. Here are some key words about his films.
Good and evil (邪恶) Miyazaki rarely tells stories in simple good and evil. The worlds he creates tend to be complex (复杂的) and unclear. The bad figures often don’t seem so bad once you get to know them. Miyazaki has explained that the lack of clear good and evil is because he sees the 21st century as complex time, in which old ideas need to be re-examined, even in children’s films.
Children The heroes in Miyazaki’s films are usually children or teens, more often young girls. Sometimes they can see the spirit world; they are curious and friendly, even to strange creatures. The stories often deal with growing up.
Sky and water Two of Miyazaki’s great loves are the sky and water, and he uses them in related ways. Flight is a forever theme—Miyazaki has never done a film without flying of some kind. His imagination seems to fly and leave behind the pull of gravity (重力), a force and control that he feels a bound (束缚) from setting him free. Water is another way for Miyazaki to fight gravity. In his films he likes the unexpected floods with crystal-clear water, and objects floating on the surface seem to be supported by magic.
Peace Miyazaki’s negative view of the war goes far more than surface deep. Violence is usually seen as wrong and painful, and Miyazaki’s heroes are often peacemakers.
【1】 What can we know about good and evil from Miyazaki’s films?
A. The complex time tends to turn good into evil.
B. He uses his films to show good finally defeats evil.
C. The figures cannot be simply judged as good or evil.
D. Children should learn to clearly tell good from evil.
【2】Miyazaki’s love for flight may come from ______.
A. the relation between sky and water
B. his hate for gravity since his childhood
C. his desire to be free from gravity
D. his love for water that can flood the world
【3】In Miyazaki’s films we may NOT see ______.
A. the attractive castle in the sky
B. a world left in ruins in the end
C. objects magically floating on the water
D. children with the problems of growing up
【4】The purpose of writing the article is to ______.
A. show the writer’s sadness for Miyazaki’s retirement from the animation industry
B. help readers to know about Miyazaki’s life and his great achievements
C. praise Miyazaki’s contribution to the development of the film industry
D. introduce Miyazaki’s retirement and the features (特点) of his animation films
24、Do you want to love what you do for a living? Follow your passion. This piece of advice provides the foundation for modern thinking on career satisfaction. But this can be a problem.
I’ve spent the past several years researching and writing about the different strategies we use to seek happiness in our work. It became clear early in the process that the suggestion to evidence. However, it passionate about your complicated. “follow your passion” was flawed, for it lacks scientific doesn’t mean you should abandon the goal of feeling work. The reality emphasizes that the things are quite.
Passion is earned. Different people are looking for different things in their work, but generally, people with satisfying careers enjoy some combination of the following features: autonomy, respect, competence, creativity, and a sense of impact. In other words, if you want to feel passionate about your livelihood, don’t seek the perfect job, but seek to get more of these features in the job you already have.
Passion is elusive (难捉摸的). Many people develop the rare and valuable skills leading to passion, but still end up unhappy in their work. The problem is that the features leading you to love your work are more likely to be useful to you than your organization. As you become increasingly “valuable”, for example, your boss might push you toward traditional promotions that come with more pay and more responsibility, as this is what is most useful to your company. However, you might find more passion by applying your value to gain autonomy in your schedule or project selection.
Passion is dangerous. I’ve watched too many of my peers fall into anxiety and chronic job-hopping due to the “follow your passion” advice. The issue is expectations. If you believe we all have a pre-existing passion, and that matching it to a job will lead to instant workplace happiness, reality will always pale in comparison.
Work is hard. Not every day is fun. If you’re seeking a dream job, you’ll end up frustrated, again and again. Don’t set out to discover passion. Instead, set out to develop it. This path might be longer and more complicated than what most cheerful career guides might advocate, but it’s a path much more likely to lead you somewhere worth going.
