二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The post office is not my favorite place. However, that was the day I went through the door with a huge smile. My story had been accepted for publication. I had read the e-mail three times before I actually believed it.

Grasped in my hand was the form giving permission to print my story. No faxing for me — I decided to send it back through the mail just to be sure it reached its destination. Filled with excitement, I told the clerk about my good news. “Wow, look at you go!” she said. “That will be ten dollars.” I reached for my credit card. “Our system doesn’t work today, so we can only accept cash,” said the clerk. I searched through my purse. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, I carried cash. But now, I rarely did. Then a deep voice behind me said, “I’ll take care of it.” I hadn’t noticed the man behind me. I turned to meet him as he held out a ten-dollar bill.

“Congratulations on your story,” he said. “Just pay it forward.” I thanked him. Then I drove to the seaside restaurant to meet Tina. As we walked back toward our cars, I noticed something on the sidewalk, shining in the sun. I picked up a credit card.

“How are we going to find the person who dropped this?” Tina asked. “First, let’s try to spot someone who seems to be searching anxiously,” I said. A moment later, Tina said excitedly, “I’ll bet that’s her!” A young mother had a baby on her back as she dug through some bags.

I approached the woman. “Are you Jessica Slate?” I asked.

    Her eyes grew round. “Yes!”

“I believe this is yours,” I said, handing her the card.

“Thank you! During normal times, I’d give you a hug,” she said. We laughed and bumped elbows instead.

I realized being on both the receiving and the giving end of kind gestures felt equally good. I had experienced an interpretation of paying it forward-first with cash, then with credit.

  • 22、   Drinking tea at least three times a week could reduce the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease(心管疾病) and is linked with a longer and healthier life, at least in China, a new study suggests. Chinese researchers found the health benefits associated with tea were more obvious for drinkers of green, rather than black tea, and for those who had been drinking tea regularly over a longer period of time. The benefits were also clearer among men, the study indicated.

Researchers looked at data from 100 902 Chinese people with no history of heart attack or cancer and divided them into two groups: habitual drinkers who drank tea three or more times a week, those who never drank tea, and those who drank it less regularly. They followed up with them after a seven-year period.

Their analysis found that regular tea drinkers had a 20%lower risk of having heart disease and stroke, and a 22%lower risk of dying from heart disease and stroke. Specifically, they found that regular tea drinkers could expect to live 1.26 years longer at age 50 than those who did not regularly enjoy a cup of tea.

“We found that the protective effects of habitual tea consumption were very obvious and robust across different outcomes for men, but only mild for women,”Dr.Dongfeng Gu from China’s National Center for Cardiovascular Disease.

“One reason might be that the proportion of habitual tea consumers among men was approximately two and a half times as high as that among women,” Gu said. Some 48%of the men in the study were regular tea drinkers, compared with 20%of women.

1What can be learned about the research from Paragraph 1?

A.Drinking tea regularly benefits people’s health.

B.Drinking black tea brings more health benefits.

C.Men always live longer than women by drinking tea.

D.People can prevent all diseases by drinking tea.

    A.Protective. B.Strong. C.Gentle. D.Beneficial

3What can we know from the last paragraph?

A.Fewer men like drinking tea. B.Men spend more money on tea.

C.Men drink more tea than women. D.Fewer women may live no more than 50.

4Where is this text most likely from?

    A.An advertisement. B.A poster. C.A guidebook. D.A magazine.

  • 23、   When you’re off to the market, what food do you put in your cart?  The last thing someone would put in their list is sea turtles(龟). But for Arron Culling and his co-worker Mark, they just had to put the turtles at top priority when they were at a local market in Papua New Guinea. They’re not planning to cook a sea turtle soup. The two stepped up to rescue the poor animals from any locals with a taste for their meat.

Through the years, biologists have seen a drop in the sea turtle population in Papua New Guinea. Until today, the sea turtles are under threat from locals who eat their eggs and meat. Ocean pollution also plays a huge factor in the survival rate. In the face of climate change and human activities, scientists were able to see and understand how these two factors affect the numbers of endangered turtles. Despite all that, turtling is still legal in some countries such as Papua New Guinea, Mexico and Australia.

When Culling and his colleague realized the fate of the two turtles in the food market, they did not hesitate and bought the sea turtles for $50. They also did not waste another second and drove for more than 3 miles and freed the turtles into the ocean.

The most amazing thing about this story is that it wasn’t Culling’s first time to be a hero for the turtles. He and his team have done this several times. They were able to rescue ten turtles from the food market so far, giving them another chance for life. Culling did the right thing in rescuing the two sea turtles from the food market. Imagine how many offsprings (后代) those two would have, now that they’re back at home.

1What does the underlined phrase “at top priority” probably mean in the first paragraph?

    A.Within the reach.

    B.Into practice.

    C.Into first consideration.

    D.Out of control.

2What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.The drop rate of turtle population.

B.Factors in the drop of turtle population.

    C.The numbers of endangered turtles.

D.The turtling condition in some countries.

3What did Arron Culling and Mark do with the two sea turtles?

    A.Raised them legally at home.

B.Bought them at a high price.

    C.Cooked them for soup.

D.Sent them back to the sea.

4Which of the following can best describe Arron Culling and Mark?

    A.Wise and outgoing.

    B.Curious and professional.

    C.Responsible and inspiring.

    D.Graceful and impressive.

  • 24、   West Nile is a tropical disease that begins in birds, which pass it on to mosquitoes that then go on to infect human beings with bites. Most people who contract West Nile do not experience any symptoms at all, but, if they do, symptoms typically develop between 3 to 14 days after a mosquito bite. About 1 in 5 persons suffers fever, headaches, and body aches, usually lasting a week or so. A far less lucky I in 150 experiences high fever, tremors, paralysis, and coma. Some—especially the elderly and those with weak immune systems—die.

That is what made the major outbreaks of West Nile in the U. S. in the summer of 2012 so scary. The situation was particularly bad in Dallas, Texas, where the West Nile virus killed 10 people and sickened more than 200. The city declared a state of emergency and began aerial spraying of a pesticide to kill the mosquitoes, even though residents argued that the pesticide could be more dangerous than the disease.

Why was the summer of 2012 so hospitable to the West Nile virus and the mosquitoes that carry it? Blame the weather. An extremely mild winter allowed more mosquitoes than usual to survive, while the unusually high temperatures in that scorching summer further increased their number by speeding up their life cycle. The economic crisis may have also played a role: homeowners who were not able to pay their bank loans were forced to abandon their properties, sometimes leaving behind pools that made excellent mosquito breeding grounds.

The severity of tropical diseases is also a matter of whether governments are capable—and willing—to defend their populations against infections. Dallas County was not doing some of the key things to slow the spread of West Nile, such as testing dead birds and setting mosquito traps to test for the presence of the disease. Tropical infections are thus as much related to government inaction as they are to climate.

1What is this passage mainly about?

A.West Nile and methods to fight it. B.West Nile and governmental efficiency.

C.West Nile and its relation to tropical diseases. D.West Nile and its rapid spread.

2Which of the following statements is true about West Nile?

A.Its symptoms usually appear within two weeks.

B.It is spread through air and water in tropical areas.

C.Over 20% of people who contract it will suffer severe symptoms.

D.It comes from direct human contact with birds infected with the virus.

3What did Dallas county do to fight off West Nile?

A.They asked citizens to stay away from dead birds.

B.They made the swimming pools empty in the county.

C.They encouraged citizens to help themselves.

D.They sprayed pesticide from the air.

4Which of the following is a reason why Dallas was hit most seriously in the U.S. in 2012?

A.The weather of the previous winter was not as cold as usual.

B.The residents worried about the county’s decision and action.

C.The government did not issue a warning about the disease in time.

D.The increasing population in Texas raised the risk of contracting the disease.
