二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Halley’s Comet (哈雷彗星) appeared at the time of Mark Twain’ s birth, making his arrival an even more special event. Twain said in 1909, “I came in with Halley’s Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it.” Surprisingly enough, Mark Twain died the day after it passed by earth a second time.

Mark Twain was a gifted writer, speaker and humorist whose own characters shone through his work. As his writing grew in popularity, he became a public character in America. As the young country grew in size but not in a cultural manner to the liking of the European people, it became fashionable to criticize (批评) “the ugly American”. Twain travelled to Europe and made the Europeans friendly to America with his wisdom (智慧) and humor.

Twain began his working life as a typesetter at a newspaper, worked as a printer, a riverboat pilot, and then turned to gold mining. When he failed to strike it rich, he turned to journalism and it was during that time that he wrote the short story that started his writing life, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras county.

Although Twain’s life as a writer made him rich, his turn as a gentleman investor (投资者) did much to make him impoverished. He lost a great deal of money earned by writing on different investments. Twain recovered financially with the help of a man named Henry Huttleson Rogers. Further success from book sales improved his financial health.

1What can we learn about Mark Twain from the first paragraph?

A.He saw Halley’s Comet coming. B.He predicted his own death.

    C.He made Halley’s Comet famous. D.He knew a lot about Halley’s Comet.

2Why did Mark Twain travel to Europe?

    A.To avoid being criticized.

    B.To show he liked travelling.

C.To prove he was good at writing.

D.To change Europeans opinion of America.

3What is the third paragraph mainly about?

    A.Mark Twain’s true interest. B.Mark Twain’s famous work.

    C.Mark Twain’s work experiences. D.Mark Twain’s life goal.

4What does the underlined word “impoverished” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Poor B.Angry

    C.Unhealthy D.Busy.

  • 22、   Companies that have invested heavily in big data want to know how to make smart investments that will distinguish them from the competition and enable the best possible return before making the decision to go all in. In the past, not all enterprises’ big data plans went as planned. These failures are not usually published, but the big data failure rate is unusually high.

According to Gartner, only 15% of businesses make it past the experimental stage of these projects. Our fear, as leaders of technology companies, is that with so much attention surrounding AI, the pressure is on for us to apply the technology without first setting clear business goals and understanding the differences between AI and ML (machine learning) and how they should be applied, thus risking falling behind the many decision-makers who are adopting the technology.

It’s easy to get caught up in the great expectations of artificial intelligence as it’s promoted, including breakthroughs like deep learning, but those who want to make an outsized influence should instead focus on good old-fashioned machine learning — or “cheap learning”.

The distinction is simple: Cheap learning is about using basic machine learning techniques on straightforward data sets in different parts of a company to produce a large number of small, gradual improvements. Deep learning, on the other hand, is a specific part of machine learning. Deep learning is a collection of advanced machine learning approaches that make business decisions based on highly complex data sets possible.

For tasks of analyzing raw data, such as images and voice recordings, deep learning is best. But when it comes to working on simplified, structured types of data, we’ve found cheap machine learning will do the trick. When you consider that the majority of data flowing through enterprises fall into this second category, it’s clear which tool makes the most sense.

1What do we know about investment in big data from the first paragraph?

    A.It’s risky. B.It’s safe. C.It’s secret. D.It’s fruitful.

2Which of the following adds to the pressure on the leading technology companies?

A.Understanding AI and ML. B.Wasting too much time on AI.

C.Falling behind other companies. D.Acting with unclear business goals.

3What should companies with ambitions concentrate on?

    A.A strong influence. B.Big breakthroughs.

    C.Cheap learning. D.Deep learning.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Companies should invest in big data.

B.Knowing the difference bewteen AI and ML matters.

C.Deeping learning or cheap learning depends on the nature of tasks.

D.Deep learning is always better than cheap learning.

  • 24、 Bottled water has become the choice for people who are healthy and thirsty. Bottled water is all over the world. But some say the planet’s health, and people’s health may be suffering from it.

The idea that bottled water is safer for humans may not be true. The Natural Resources Defense Council of America said, There is no promise that because water comes out of a bottle, it is cleaner or safer than water from the tap.” Another New York City-based action group added that some bottled water is “really just tap water in a bottle—sometimes more clean, sometimes not.”

It is not proven that bottled water is better than tap water. Nick Reeves from the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management said, The high mineral content(含量) of some bottled water makes them not good for feeding babies and young children.” Also, most bottled water doesn’t have fluoride(氟化物), which can make teeth stronger. Kids are drinking more bottled water and less fluoridated tap water, and some say that’s behind the recent rise in bad teeth.

Storing is another problem. Placed near heat, the plastic bottles can produce bad chemicals(化学物质) into the water.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, some 2.7 million tons of plastic are used worldwide to bottle water each year. The plastic can take between 400 and 1,000 years to break down.

In terms of energy use, plastic bottles are also not cheap. One report said that if water and soft drink bottlers had used 10 percent recycled materials in their plastic bottles, they would have saved about 72 million gallons of gas.

So, if you are worried about the effect of bottled water on the Earth, you can take the following steps.

Drink from your tap. Unless your government warns against this, it should be fine.

Get a container(容器). Carry your tap water in a steel or a lined drinking container, and clean it between uses.

Keep it cool. Don’t drink from a bottle that has been sitting in the sun, don’t store it near chemicals, and don’t reuse plastic bottles.

Choose glass containers over plastic if possible. When finished, recycle!

【1】What is the main idea of the article?

    D. They are cheap to make.

3According to the article, we can know that bottled water is ______.

    A. no problem for the environment

    B. more expensive than tap water

    C. always safer than tap water

    D. better for babies

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Why Is Littering a Surprisingly Big Issue?

Compared with the blindingly obvious environmental issues we hear about every day, littering often takes a backseat -- but it’s more pressing than we may think.

If you were to throw, say, a banana peel (香蕉皮) out of your car while driving along the motorway, that would be a completely harmless action, due to the fact that it’s part of a fruit -- right? Actually, no. A banana peel can take up to two years to decompose (分解), and with a third of motorists admitting to littering while driving, that’s a whole lot of abandoned banana peels, or much worse. An orange peel and a cigarette butt has a similar biodegrading (生物降解) term to that of a banana, but tin and aluminium cans last up to 100 years, and plastic bottles last forever, as do glass bottles, Styrofoam cups and plastic bags.

Despite the fact that longer-lasting materials will serve to damage the environment and its animals for longer, we can’t only measure the severity of a certain type of rubbish by its lifetime. For example, despite having a fairly short biodegrading period, more than 120 tons of cigarette-related litter is abandoned in the UK every day. Similarly, our regular littering here and there has caused the UK’s rat population to increase by 60 million. This suddenly isn’t so mysterious when you consider that since the 1960s our annual littering has increased by an astonishing 500 per cent.

It’s not a cheap habit either: UK taxpayers shelve out £500 million in order to keep our streets clean, and when you include our green spaces, that goes up to £1 billion. So, it’s not surprising that if caught fly-tipping you could face a £20,000 fine or even jail time and, if you littered something dangerous, the court could give you five years to serve.

To take back our beautiful countryside and cities we need to do more than simply not leaving rubbish where it ought not to be. We need a pride makeover, and we need to truly care more about the world around us.
