21、In this article, I’m going to show you certain aspects of the Chinese language and explain why they make learning the language a lot easier than you might think.
No verb conjugations (变化)
When you learn English, you need to remember how the verb changes with the subject and time. In Chinese, there are no verb inflections (词尾的屈折变化) at all. 【1】.
No grammatical cases
In English, we make a difference between how pronouns are used depending on if they are the subject or the object of a sentence. 【2】. None of that in Chinese!
Flexible parts of speech
When learning English, you need to remember different forms of the words depending on what part of speech they belong to. For example, we say “ice” (noun), “icy” (adjective) and “to ice” (verb). These look different. 【3】. You don’t know which one it is unless you know the context. This means that speaking and writing becomes much easier since you don’t need to remember so many different forms!
【4】
Word order in Chinese can be a little bit tricky, but it becomes much easier at more advanced levels. As a beginner, there are a few patterns you need to learn, and once you’ve done that, you can just fill in the words you’ve learnt and people will be able to understand. It also helps that the basic word order is the same as in English: subject—verb—object.
What all these boil down to is that learning Chinese needn’t be all that hard. Yes, reaching an advanced level takes a lot of time and effort. 【5】
A.Relatively easy word order
B.The same subject—verb—object order
C.In short, it is very easy to learn Chinese well
D.We say “he talks to her”, while “him talks to she” is wrong
E.In Chinese, though, these could all be represented by one single word “ice”
F.For example, you can use “look” for any person and refer to any period of time
G.But getting to basic conversational fluency is easy for anyone who really wants it
22、Language is born of culture and in turn reflects (反映) the history of a culture. This is clear when we compare English in Britain, the United States and Australia.
Of the three dialects, British English has the most confusing (令人困惑的) grammar and spelling rules. This is probably because the development of English has been under the control of the upper class. The modern English language came into being in the 18th century. The upper class who spoke French wanted to show their influence and make themselves different from the uneducated working people. In other words, British English reflects the British character with class.
The US dialect is generally recognized as the easiest to understand. Compared with British English, its spelling is more connected with its pronunciation. And its grammatical rules are much easier to follow. What's more, its words are simpler to pronounce. For foreigners, it's much easier to learn. That's why American English is more popular in the world.
The reason why American English is simpler than British English is connected with its special history. British English was mainly influenced by the upper class. But American upper class didn't exist when American English was born. American English was based on the dialects spoken by working people from different countries. So the formation of American English was based on a rule to help all the working people with different cultural backgrounds communicate more easily.
Australian English is different from British and American English. It is the most vulgar (粗俗的) of the three. Actually it has a tendency to show its invention, disrespect and humor. At times, this can make it almost impossible to understand and quite impolite to some educated speakers. That is partly connected with special identity of the early settlers.
【1】Why is British English more confusing than American English?
A.Because it was influenced by the upper class.
B.Because English people are more educated.
C.Because it was totally created by Frenchmen.
D.Because England was more powerful in the past.
【2】American English is more popular than British English worldwide because ________.
A.it has fewer words
B.the US has a shorter history
C.the US has a larger population
D.it is easier to learn for foreigners
【3】What can we infer from the passage?
A.Australian English is easy to understand.
B.Australian English is preferred by educated people.
C.Modern English became popular in the 18th century.
D.American English may develop from working people's language.
【4】Which of the following can best describe Australian English?
A.Polite.
B.Rude.
C.Welcome.
D.Special.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Shoes are made for walking.
But Aamir, a homeless Indian boy, doubted it. Wandering the noisy railway platform, he found one of his flip-flops (人字拖鞋) broken again. He hurried to a corner, sat down and tried to fix it, his bare foot pressing awkwardly against the ground. However, it was beyond repair.
He gave up and looked around aimlessly, staring at people’s shoes. Suddenly, his eyes were drawn to two boyish legs wearing flawlessly white socks and equally perfect black leather shoes, which were glittering in the mid-day sun. It was a boy of his age. He couldn’t treasure his possession too much, obviously, because every ten seconds, he stopped, bent down and carefully wiped a dust or two from his shoes. His father was constantly glancing over and urging him, “Hurry up! The train is coming!”
Aamir’s eyes followed the father and son, but mostly the leather shoes, as if enchanted (被施魔法的). Imagining himself wearing them, the comfort from the good leather, jaw-dropping look on his friends’ faces, he couldn’t help cracking a big smile.
The bell of the train drew him back; the fancy-shoe boy and his father were about to get aboard. They tried to crowd into the doorway. However, the instant the boy entered the compartment (车厢), one of his shoes fell off and before he could pick it up, the train began to pull away.
The shoe was now lying alone on the platform. Aamir’s eyes lit up with excitement. Like an arrow, he shot for the shoe and then picked it up, holding it with both hands as if holding the Queen’s crown. After a few seconds of hesitating and looking from the shoe to the train and back, he began racing--with only one good shoe, his flip-flop.
He held the leather shoe up, trying to pass it to the boy through the window, who was desperately reaching out his hand as well. However, it was never close enough.
Para 1: That left Aamir no choice but to throw the shoe onto the train.
