21、Online Meetings May Affect Creativity, Study Finds
Many companies have moved online because of COVID-19, with work meetings around the world taking place virtually instead of in the office. But a recent study has found that online meetings may affect creative thinking. The study, published in Nature, included 602 people who were divided into random pairs. Each pair was given five minutes to think of creative uses for an item such as a Frisbee, and then one minute to choose the most creative idea.
Some pairs were asked to work together on a video call, while others worked in person. The results showed that the in-person pairs had more ideas than the virtual pairs. However, virtual groups were better at choosing the best idea. The researchers also used eye-tracking technology to see whether focusing on a screen can affect a person’s creativity.
Teams working together virtually spent more time looking directly at each other and remembered less of their surroundings when asked later. The in-person pairs spent more time looking around the room, but also had more ideas.
The researchers did the same study with 1,490 engineers. The pairs were asked to think of new product ideas and choose one as an idea for their company. The results were similar to the first study, with the engineers who met in person thinking of more product ideas, and the virtual pairs making slightly better decisions about which idea to choose.
Study author Melanie Brucks said that while she thinks the future of work is hybrid, the results suggest that businesses should think carefully about which tasks can be done online, and which—like thinking of new ideas—should be done in person.

22、 Hot dogs, peanuts, an orderly green field: Sal Miyake loves everything about her first baseball game– a love shared by author Scott Simon as a kid at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois.
Sal is the main character in Simon’s first kids novel, Sunnyside Plaza. To create her world, Simon made use of his job at a halfway house when he was 19 years old. He cared for adults with mental disabilities. Working the evening shift, he made sure they brushed their teeth and took their medicine before bedtime.
“All my life I’ve wanted to write about that experience,” said Simon, a journalist who hosts Weekend Edition Saturday for a radio station. He said the job changed his life.
Like Simon’s long-ago clients, Sal lives in a home for adults with mental challenges. It’s called Sunnyside Plaza. Sal is kind and hard-working, and she helps the cook in the kitchen every day. She is also very observant. Sal may not be able to read, but she notices details that others often miss. When some of her Sunnyside friends begin to die, Sal tries to figure out why. Because of her disability, people don’t always take her seriously, but others help, sometimes in surprising ways.
At the halfway house, “I enjoyed getting to know people who at first sight seemed a world away from me,” said Simon. “Then I realized how much we had in common. We talked and joked. I liked spending time with them.” One of Simon’s favorite memories: taking 12 of the residents to a Chicago Cubs baseball game, where their amazement mirrors Sal’s in the book.
Simon based Sal on several people he knew, and he did additional research to make sure her voice and viewpoint are believable. “I wanted to get all this right,” said Simon. “The books you read when you’re young really stay with you.” For him, this meant the classics his mother guided him to, including his favorites Black Beauty by Anna Sewell and A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.

24、The Terracotta Army is one of the must-visit attractions for all travellers to China. The attraction is located in Xi’an, in west China’s Shaanxi Province.
What’s special?
The Terracotta Army is the buried army of Qin Shi Huang, an ancient Chinese emperor. These ancient sculptures were built and buried over two thousand years ago near the city of Xi’an. They were discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a well looking for underground water. Over eight thousand terracotta warriors and horses have been uncovered since then.
