二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Do you live in a city where looking up the air quality forecast is just as important as checking the weather forecast for the day? Many places around the world have terrible pollution problems. But now new research suggests that we might be able to protect ourselves, naturally and easily— simply by taking vitamin B.

The study was conducted by a team of international researchers. Their focus was on a pollutant known as PM2.5. Its size, approximately l/40th the width of a human hair, makes it particularly dangerous because it is readily inhaled and small enough to spread through the body via the blood. This can cause damage to the lungs if PM2.5 is being breathed in regularly.

The current experiment involved subjects being exposed to clean air and a placebo(安慰剂) to record baseline responses. They were given the placebo for four weeks, then exposed through a face mask to air from a highly polluted area in downtown Toronto. The researchers measured methylation (甲基化) changes to DNA; the damage increased in each participant. However, in the repeated experiment, when the volunteers were given a vitamin supplement containing 1 milligram of vitamin B12, 50 mg of vitamin B6, and 2.5 mg of folic acid daily for four weeks, it reduced the damage to the DNA by a range of 28 to 76 percent.

The results indicate how prevention at an individual level could be used to fight the harmful effects of PM2.5. However, researchers stressed that research was in its early stages. Future studies, especially in heavily polluted areas, are urgently needed and they’ll finally develop preventive measures using B vitamins to prevent the health effects of air pollution.

1What does the underlined word “inhaled” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

    A. breathed.   B. smelt.

    C. approached.   D. discovered.

2How does the author introduce the current experiment?

    A. By analyzing causes.   B. By giving examples.

    C. By making comparisons.   D. By describing effects.

3What can we learn about the researchers in the last paragraph?

    A. They warned people of heavy pollution.

    B. They regretted not using enough volunteers.

    C. They’ll soon find more ways to test B vitamins.

    D. They’ll confirm the findings in highly polluted areas.

4What can be the best title of the text?

    A. PM2.5 Is Most Deadly

    B. Vitamin B Benefits People Most

    C. Vitamin B Offers Air Pollution Protection

    D. Air Quality Forecast Is Extremely Important

  • 22、In recent years, a lot of “business thinking” books have been published, all of which search for new answers on how to run organizations effectively. Obliquity tells us that the most profitable companies are not the most aggressive in chasing profits. Wikinomics demonstrates new models of production based on community and collaboration. Peter Miller’s new book, Smart Swarm, however, challenge leaders to think differently. He studied creatures, like bees and ants and he found their habits, actions and instincts can be applied to business. Miller believes his book is the first time anyone has explained the science behind management theory. “The examples of how ant colonies (蚁群) or beehives (蜂窝) work are appealing models for organizations and systems that can be applied in a business context,” he says.

So how exactly can bees help run organizations? “By the way they work independently before they work together,” Miller says. “Picture a huge beehive hanging on a tree, with about 5,000 bees competing for space. They know their population is getting too big, leaving them unsafe. They must all agree to find a new home. In today’s business environment, managers need to be able to make the right decisions under intense pressure. Yet, it is clear that some of the best-paid leaders in some of the biggest organizations can get it dramatically wrong. How is it that they can fail to make efficient business decisions when a large group of bees can make a critical decision about their hive in just a few seconds?”

According to Miller, “swarm theory” can help managers in three simple steps: discover, test and evaluate. The bees first realize they have a problem. They then fly into the neighborhood to find potential new sites. They come back and perform a “dance” to get other bees to follow them. Eventually, the bees with the best dance attract the most votes – and a decision is made. Miller says. “The bee example tells you that you need to seek out diversity in your team. You need to have a way of gathering up quite different ideas so you can make sure you pick the right one.”

Ants, in addition, can help businesses organize workflow and people. In an ant colony, there is no leader. Ants are self-organized, and respond to their environment and each other. One ant on its own could not raid (袭击) a kitchen cupboard, but one ant telling the next one that it’s worth following him to find food ends up creating a food chain. “In an ant colony, you get the right number going in and out searching for food, you get the right number taking care of the babies,” Miller says. “As a manager, this can tell you that your hierarchy (等级制度) is getting in the way of getting the work done.”

【1】Miller believes his book differs from other “business thinking” books because ________.

    A.it focuses on maximizing profits

B.it supports the theory with evidence

C.it corrects faults in similar books

    D.it justifies the previous theory

【2】In the second paragraph, the author indicates that the behavior of bees can show managers how to ________.

A.make up for wrongly made decisions

B.justify exactly what the real problem is

    C.draw the correct conclusions quickly

D.keep the team safe under great pressure

【3】According to the “swarm theory”, managers need to ________.

    A.regard decision-making as a cooperative process

B.persuade others to follow your ways of thinking

C.accept different ideas and keep them balanced

D.pick out a right person to make the final decision

【4】Which of the following can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Leadership skills can be developed through practical work.

B.Employees work more efficiently when organized by leaders.

C.Strengthened hierarchy is the guarantee of work efficiency.

D.Employees should be allowed to make their own decisions.

  • 23、The first emperor of China, Qin Shihuang, is remembered for the many things he did during his rule. Between 221 and 210 B. C. , he started the construction of the Great Wall of China. He built a large network of roads. He introduced a new writing system, currency, and set of measurements. The emperor also ordered the construction of a huge army of life-sized terracotta soldiers. These, he hoped, would protect his tomb after his death.

Today, the soldiers in Xi'an's terracotta museum are light brown, but they weren't always this color. They began as an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple. Sadly, most of the colors did not last to the present day. Before their discovery, the clay soldiers were protected by being underground. When they were unearthed, however, the air caused the coating under the paint to fall off. The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking with it important pieces of history.

New techniques are now starting to reveal the army's true colors. Archeologists have recently discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted features, including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes. Chinese and German researchers have developed a special liquid to help preserve the soldiers, colors. After they find a soldier or other artifact, archeologists spray it with the liquid. They then cover it in plastic.

Archeologists are also finding colors in the dirt around Xi'an's terracotta warriors. It's important not to disturb the dirt, so the colors won't be lost. “We are treating the earth as an artifact, says archeologist Rong Bo, the museum's leading chemist. The next challenge, says Rong, is to find a way to apply the colors to the army again. Once that happens, artists can bring. Emperor Qin's army back to life in full color.

【1】What is the passage mainly about?

A.How the emperor's tomb was built.

B.The original colors of the terracotta soldiers.

C.What life was like for soldiers under Emperor Qin.

D.How soldiers started the Great Wall.

【2】Which of the following is true according to the second paragraph?

A.The soldiers lost their colors very quickly after being discovered.

B.The soldiers' paint fell off because of the high temperature.

C.Visitors to the museum do not actually see the original soldiers.

D.Archaeologists have discovered many terracotta soldiers.

【3】Which of the following can replace the underlined word “unearthed” in paragraph 2?

    A.Destroyed.

    B.Dug up.

    C.Identified.

    D.Buried.

【4】Which statement would Rong Bo probably agree with?

A.The soldiers should be left the way they were found.

B.Artists should be able to paint the soldiers any color they want.

C.We should try to restore the army's original colors.

D.The first step when opening a tomb is blowing away the dirt.

  • 24、Do you often feel lonely? What do you do when you feel that way? Hide yourself away and spend your time reading, watching TV or walking around?

You might think that feeling lonely is just like feeling happy, sad or scared that it’s just one of your various moods. That is true. However, if you let yourself be lonely for too long without dealing with it, you could be making a serious mistake.

Doctors have known for some time that feeling lonely is bad for the mind. It can lead to mental health problems such as depression, stress and reduce confidence. “Being lonely means not feeling connected or cared for, but it’s not about being mentally alone,” Lisa Jaremka, scientist from Ohio State University, US, told Live Science in January. And there’s growing evidence that not having friends is connected with physical illness as well.

In 2006, for example, scientists studied 2,800 women who had cancer. They found that those who had few friends or family were five times more likely to die of their disease than women with many social contacts. Also, even healthy people had a better chance of falling ill if they felt left out by others, according to the BBC.

The results have scientists thinking that loneliness might hurt the immune system(免疫系统), which protects the body from diseases.

Hoping to prove this theory, Jaremka and her research team put volunteers(志愿者) through a stress test. During the test, volunteers were asked to make an unprepared speech in front of a group of stony-faced people. The researchers found that volunteers who said they were lonely in their daily lives felt more stress during the test. And their blood samples showed that all the stress had managed to cause harmful changes to their immune system.

“Loneliness has been thought of in many ways as a chronic stressor(慢性增压器) a socially painful situation that can last for quite a long time, explained Jaremka, who led the study.

The number of people suffering from loneliness is increasing all over the world. However, solving the problem is easier said than done. It won’t work to just “tell anyone to go out and find someone to love you”, said Jaremka. “We need to create support networks.”

【1】If people feel lonely for a long time, ________.

    A. they won’t feel happy anymore

    B. they are more mentally harmed than physically

    C. they will find the feeling goes away by itself

    D. they are more likely to fall ill

【2】What was the purpose of the stress test carried out by Jaremka’s team?

    A. To find out how people fight diseases.

    B. To prove loneliness hurts people’s immune systems.

    C. To find out the relationship between loneliness and stress.

    D. To see how people’s emotions change when they give unprepared speeches.

【3】We can conclude from the article that ________.

    A. loneliness has become the No. 1 killer in the world

    B. loneliness is increasing due to advanced technologies

    C. websites must be set up to help people deal with loneliness

    D. much more work needs to be done to fight loneliness
