21、 When was the last time you saw some dolphins at an aquarium? Was the scene fun to watch? Do you think the dolphins enjoyed it? A film shows just exactly where some of these dolphins come from. And it isn’t pleasant.
The Cove is a documentary film with a lot of blood — dolphin blood. It’s all about dolphin drive hunting, which is a method of hunting dolphins that fishermen use. They use boats to drive the dolphins into a bay or onto a beach. Once there, the dolphins are prevented from escaping and are then killed in the water with knives or spears.
The dolphins are mostly hunted for their meat, but some are captured and end up in dolphinariums, including the world-famous SeaWorld theme parks. This form of dolphin killing takes place in many places around the world. There is dolphin drive hunting in the Solomon Islands, Peru and the Faroe Islands.
The Cove focuses on the particular dolphin hunting near the town of Taiji in Japan.
Every year, more than 2,000 dolphins are driven into a cove near the town and killed. The documentary film was directed by former National Geographic photographer Louis Psihoyos, and was made secretly throughout 2007 using underwater microphones and a hidden camera. Also appearing in the film was Ric O’Barry, the director of saving Japan dolphins, and also a marine mammal expert. He trained dolphins for the popular 1960s TV series Flipper. He is praised for having started the dolphin entertainment industry but has spent most of his life fighting against it.
So what do the people of Taiji think about it? Many feel that they are being unfairly selected out. The town of Taiji has a 400-year history of whale and dolphin hunting and its fishermen only catch about 20% of Japan's yearly dolphin quota (定额).
Masashi Nishimura, manager of the Japan Fisheries Association’s International section, said, “I don't think it’s a big topic here. As long as the killing is humane (人道的), dolphins are like other animals to us.”
But for many people, dolphins are special. They are clearly highly intelligent mammals and they often form strong bonds of friendship with humans. Primates, such as chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans are all protected species. Should these levels of protection be extended to marine mammals too? Many believe they should.
【1】Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Fishermen use boats to drive the dolphins into a bay.
B.There is dolphin drive hunting in the Solomon Islands.
C.Underwater microphones were used to make the film.
D.All the dolphins caught in Japan are sold for meat.
【2】What is Masashi Nishimura’s attitude towards the killings?
A.Cold. B.Regretful.
C.Unfair D.Unsupportive
【3】What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To introduce a documentary film The Cove.
B.To show how The Cove was made.
C.To encourage people to protect dolphins.
D.To describe what is happening to dolphins.
22、Breakfast is food for the brain and for the rest of your body. And downing those morning calories is worth it, even for people worried about their weight, a new study finds.
The study was led by Marlene Schwartz, a psychologists who studies obesity (肥胖). Her group studied some 600 middle-school students. Over three years, students from 12 different schools were asked about their breakfasts. Throughout the study about 34%---44% of all students said that they regularly ate breakfast at home. Up to 17%, or almost one in every six kids, regularly ate breakfast at school. Overall (总的来说), about one in every 10 kids reported eating breakfasts both at home and at school. Eating habits changed somewhat as the kids got older. For instance, fifth graders were more likely to regularly eat breakfast at home. But by seventh grade, 22% of the studied kids often skipped breakfast.
Surprisingly, at every age, kids who ate breakfast were less likely to be overweight. This was true even for those who ate breakfast at home and at school. It also found that students who skipped breakfast most often were those most likely to be overweight. These findings may seem puzzling. Yet Schwartz’s team can think of several possible explanations.
Skipping breakfast may set people up to be “over-hungry” later in the day, she says. Then someone may eat more food than their body needs. When that happens, it might take the brain longer to realize “you have enough food and can stop eating now.” What’s more, not eating in the morning prevents our brains and bodies from working properly. It’s very difficult for children to stay concentrated in class if they arrive without having breakfast.
But why should eating two breakfasts not lead to weight gain? One explanation may be that school breakfasts are very healthy and controlled in size, notes Schwartz. Also, most of the double-breakfast eaters are boys. These kids are active and actively growing. They sometimes eat twice as much as other people.
【1】The example underlined in the second paragraph is meant to tell us ________.
A.having breakfast is of no use at all
B.skipping breakfast is rather harmful to kids’ health
C.kids will change their eating habits as they grow older
D.it is important to have breakfast regularly
【2】According to the passage, which one of the following statements is NOT true?
A.The study was carried out among middle-school students.
B.The study was going on for over three years.
C.Skipping breakfast often will actually lead to weight gain..
D.We can never eat too much in the morning.
【3】Based on the passage, what may happen to a boy who eats breakfast regularly?
A.He may put on weight.
B.His brain and body will work properly.
C.He will be in perfect health.
D.He will be absent-minded in class.
【4】What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph?
A.Kids moving a lot need more energy.
B.Kids should eat more to stay healthy.
C.Eating two breakfasts will lead to weight gain.
D.Schools must provide healthy breakfasts.
23、Getting your children to study can be a little like getting them to eat their vegetables.
【1】 Make a study time and have it at the same time every day. This will help your kids to learn to schedule their day and will give them a sense of control over how they spend their time.
Allow them to study in blocks of time, such as for half an hour with a five-minute break in the middle. 【2】 Ideal(理想的) study times are after dinner or right after school before dinner.
Never allow your children to study in front of the television, as that will encourage passive activity. 【3】
You’ll also need to help your kids find the right place to study. After you’ve set up a good study time for little learners, set up a good place where they can get those creative juices flowing.
【4】 Make sure there is a table or a desk and a comfortable chair.
【5】 This includes helping them out with their homework sometimes and being there for them with the answers to any questions. The input you give your children during study periods will help form a bond and help make studying enjoyable.
A.Pick a place where your children can study properly.
B.Hold them to the schedule they create for themselves.
C.Finally, spend time with your kids when they’re studying.
D.Keep the atmosphere light and offer lots of encouragement, too.
E.Instead, use TV as a treat or a reward when the homework is completed.
F.Try to stop this bad habit by offering some sort of reward.
G.One of the best ways to form good study habits for your kids is to design a schedule that they keep to.
