21、Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own. My mom was one of those people.
My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen. While I was growing up, we lived a very hard life. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life, “Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.”
At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to badly enough. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school — walking on my own!
When the Great Depression (大萧条) hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the both of us. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.
Over the years, I experienced various levels of business success. But the real turning point occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel (汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time.
Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world — Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1, 759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $ 1 billion a year.
You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.

22、In what’s believed to be a first London’s Imperial College Business School is using holographic technology(全息技术)to present lectures to students. From California a product manager was beamed onto a stage like magic. The head of Imperial’s EdTech Lab says, this presents a window to the world. Through holograms(全息图)we can bring in lectures from across the globe, and they can appear in front of our students in a realistic manner. That’s the key.
The developer of the technique explains how it works. “We’re presenting a 2D image as a 3D image, and the iris(虹膜)is flat so we see everything in 2D.Our brain changes it to 3D. We’re doing exactly the same trick. We’re presenting a 2D image but with depth of field and a really good vision. My brain just changes it to a 3D image.” Attendees say there are many ways this tool can help educators and students.
The second thing we could do with that is having CEOs coming to the classroom, and engaging with students. And the third way probably is maybe to have Albert Einstein coming to the classroom. There might be a long wait for that. Meanwhile, master student Josephine Collins says she prefers the interaction a hologram lecture offers compared to those presented online.
I wouldn’t mind it. I think its very interesting if we can have access to different lectures and different things like guest speakers. That’s something I would definitely enjoy. Developers say the cost of holographic technology has dropped considerably since the days it was used mostly in big-budget music shows making it possible for educational institutions to afford it.

23、Russ Gremel, now 98 years old, decided it was time to donate $2 million to the Illinois Audubon Society, a charity to purchase nearly 400 acres of land for wildlife protection. Gremel was able to make this amazing donation because he purchased $1,000 worth of Walgreens stock seven decades ago whose value has grown recently.
“A single man with no kids, Gremel has lived in the same Chicago house for 95 years, and has always lived simply”, neighbor Patrick Falso told TODAY. Falso said he heard Gremel say many times the “money wasn’t mine to begin with” and that he always intended to give it away.
The Gremel Wildlife shelter was founded on June 4. Illinois Audubon Society president Jim Herkert said Gremel’s donation was extremely generous. “It’s allowing us to protect a really valuable and important possession and realize one of Gremel’s wishes that we could find a place where people could come out and experience nature the way he did as a kid,” Herkert told TODAY.
After doing all this, this past weekend, Gremel adopted an old Chihuahua(吉娃娃犬). Winnie the dog was picked up as a homeless dog several months ago. She suffered from a kind of cancer, which was treated—and all she needed was a loving home, which Colleen Collins, the founder of Perfect Pooches Adoption Agency, was determined to find.
Gremel had lost his own beloved Chihuahua earlier this year. When he reached out to Collins about Winnie, she felt this could be a good match. That feeling grew when she brought Winnie to his house for a meet and greet, and Winnie was introduced not only to Gremel but also some of his friends and neighbors. One had brought over a lot of fresh strawberries; all said they’d be there to help out in any way needed.
【1】Patrick Falso is mentioned in the text mainly to explain _________.
A.how Gremel earned the money
B.what kind of person Gremel is
C.why Gremel made the donation
D.where Gremel has been living
【2】What can we learn about Russ Gremel from the text?
A.He raised many pet dogs in his life.
B.He bought Walgreens stock at age 28.
C.He adopted a young Chihuahua recently.
D.He volunteered in wildlife shelters regularly.
【3】What can we infer about Gremel’s neighbors from the text?
A.They live in harmony with animals.
B.They are impressed with dog Winnie.
C.They lead a healthy and wealthy life.
D.They are caring and kind to each other.
24、 Some people have glibly(轻率地)called it the "Chinese burger." But roujiamo, a food that has its origins in northern China's Shaanxi Province, is different from what you'd order at Burger King, with a far longer 2,000-year-old history. Roujiamo is a thing of beauty — a soft but chewy bun filled with small pieces of braised(炖)pork.
Most amazingly, some customers might show their respect for the pork in this little bun, which was just bathed in the soup that is older than them. Among a sea of tough competition, Lijiarongxi, a restaurant recognized as the best roujiamo place in town, should owe its success to the soup used to slow-cook its meat, which has been braised on the stove since the founder, Mr. Li, first braised it 27years ago. In fact, most restaurants of good fame have an exclusive heritage recipe(家传秘方)for their soups that often date back to decades ago. The soup in Fanji Roujiamo, one of Xi'an's best-known roujiamo restaurants, is believed to be more than 80 years old!
You might eat the bun quickly in seconds, but like all good things, it should be given time to enjoy. Chefs braise the pork in its decade-old soup for hours and let it sit overnight, making the meat more tender. Such tenderly cooked meat is what lends this dish the nickname "lao han xi" in Xianyang. That's because the best roujiamo meat is so soft that it should melt in your mouth without having to chew it — imagining the elderly customers in question, without a perfect set of teeth.
It's also worth noting that like most types of regional Chinese food, roujiamo varies depending on the city and community. Buns come baked or pan-fried, and for the meat, Muslim communities in Shaanxi often use beef, while people in Ningxia usually choose lamb.
【1】What is right about roujiamo?
A.A soft but chewy bun with meat.
B.A pork bun with a history less than 2,000 years.
C.A kind of food ordered at Burger King.
D.A typical burger originating in Shaanxi Province.
【2】What is the main factor that makes roujiamo amazing?
A.A sea of fierce competition. B.The softness of the meat.
C.The soup used to braise the meat. D.Its exclusive heritage recipes.
【3】What does the nickname "lao han xi" suggest in Paragraph 3?
A.The decade-old soup is so attractive that the old feel like bathing in it.
B.The meat gets soft and is friendly for the old to eat, making them happy.
C.The meat turns tough after being braised in its decade-old soup for hours.
D.The meat melts in the mouth of the old, who sigh for not tasting it successfully.

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
“Open this one!” Chloe cried, handing her older sister a package from under the Christmas tree.
Laila opened it. “Cute,” she said, pulling out the velvet(天鹅绒)pillow Chloe had made. “It’ll match my dorm room.”
“I sewed it without help,” Chloe announced. “And look, I put two special pockets for you to put...”
But Laila was distracted. “That reminds me, she interrupted Chloe. “Mom, can I take the sewing machine(缝纫机)back to college with me? I’m helping with costumes for a play.”
As Laila and Mom chatted, the pillow fell to the floor. Chloe stared at it. Would the pillow end up in the giveaway pile? Would the time spent sewing be ignored?
Her throat tightened. “I’m going to the kitchen to get more cider,” she mumbled.
For most of Chloe’s life, what had seemed fun to Chloe had been pesky(讨厌的)or babyish to Laila. But after Laila left for college, things changed. She often phoned Chloe complaining how hard it was to be away from home. But now she was treating Chloe like the pesky little sister again.
“There you are!” Mom said, rushing into the kitchen. “We’re due at Grandma’s in 30 minutes. We’ll have to open the rest of the gifts later.”
Chloe quickly changed her clothes, sneaked the pillow out to the garage and stuffed it into the giveaway pile. The specially chosen photo of the whole family in one pocket would never comfort Laila when she was homesick.
For the rest of the day, Chloe’s stomach felt as if it had a rock in it. Laila had spent the whole holiday with the grown-up cousins. She’d hardly said a word to Chloe! Well, the next time, Chloe would simply ignore her when Mom asked her to answer Laila’s phone.
“Where are you going?” Laila asked as Chloe headed upstairs. “To my room,” Chloe said coldly. “But you still have a gift under the tree!” Laila reminded her. Chloe shrugged. Laila grabbed her hand and pulled her to the living room. She handed Chloe a package. “I’m pretty sure you’ll like it.”
