二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Some people get more unwilling to take risks as the years go by. Not Gail MacCallum, who at age 40 quit a secure job and left the city she had enjoyed her whole adult life to step into the unknown.

MacCallum spent her formative years in a farmhouse without electricity and enjoyed the freedom of the natural world. During her adult life, she moved through several jobs before finding her calling in book publishing and then magazines. One day she and her partner Ian Connellan were on a holiday on Hobart, enjoying the chance to get close to wildlife, when they ran into some friends- of-friends, who asked them to dinner. The next day, recalls MacCallum, “They said, ‘We think you should buy our house.’” With no intention of uprooting their lives she and Connellan thought this was “entirely ridiculous", yet they got really excited talking about the possibilities such a move might present. “At last,” we said, “Let's give it a go.”

They resigned from their jobs and moved to Hobart. Both of them are brave travelers who had spent time with scientists working in various remote spots around the world. They wondered if they could make a living by helping others to experience those unique places for themselves. Then came the new company Curious Traveler. “It works brilliantly. Scientists get helpers and funding. Guests get to see what scientists do and how the world is changing because of it. They leave, excited and inspired,” MacCallum says.

In two-and-a-half years, the pair still have to replenish their incomes with some writing and editing, but the business is growing and within five years they hope to be helping fund half a dozen research projects. It is a big task. “Some days we think it would be great to turn it off,” MacCallum says, “but when we see the wonder on the face of a person who is experiencing somewhere like the Galapagos for the first time, we know we are living a wonderful life.”

【1】What caused MacCallum and Connellan to give up their jobs?

A.A casual offer from some friends-of-friends.

    B.Their childhood experiences with nature.

C.Their boredom with their then jobs.

D.The desire to protect the wildlife.

【2】What does MacCallum and Connellan's company do?

A.It promotes tourism in remote places.

B.It gets courageous travelers to explore the world.

C.It organizes trips to places of scientific research.

D.It helps scientists find proper spots for research.

【3】What mainly inspires MacCallum and Connellan to keep going?

A.Their dream for a booming business.

B.The financial gain from their work.

    C.The prospect of research programs.

    D.The satisfaction of their customers.

【4】The underlined word “replenish" in Paragraph 4 means _________.

  • 22、   Sonya took Rupert, a rescue dog, back home three years ago, and soon found it liked attacking strangers and other animals, which she believed was caused by pain.

It took Sonya a year to develop a normal relationship with Rupert, during which she learned it was afraid of being left alone and also couldn’t walk properly. Finally, she decided to take it to see a vet (兽医). After examining Rupert, the vet said its leg was broken, and it needed an immediate operation.

But when it had to go in for an operation on its leg, there was a problem—the vet Mike couldn’t get near the dog. Mike and Sonya were left scratching their heads until one of them came up with an idea. Sonya said Rupert slept on a mouse suit so she suggested that Mike put it on.

At first, the dog barked wildly when Mike tried to operate on it in usual clothes. To make his patient feel at ease, Mike decided to dress up in the mouse clothes to see if it would be less worried. Amazingly, it worked. It stopped barking and immediately became good friends with Mike when he put on the suit. As a result, he was able to perform an operation on the leg safely and the result was quite satisfying.

After the successful operation, Mike hugged the dog around the neck, which isn’t usually well-received by pets. Mike tried to be as respectful of its needs as possible and made time to give some attention. What Mike had done created a special experience or event in the dog’s life.

1What do we know about Rupert?

A.It was often left alone at home. B.It was hard to get on with at first.

C.Its leg broke after it was saved by Sonya. D.Its violence was caused by its rescue job.

2Why did Mike and Sonya scratch their heads?

A.They couldn’t find a mouse suit. B.They had great pain in their head.

C.They didn’t know how to comfort the dog. D.They didn’t find the cause of Rupert’s pain.

    3Why did Rupert stop barking?

    A.It saw Sonya. B.It didn’t feel pain.

C.It saw the mouse suit. D.It was hugged by Mike.

4What played the most important part in calming down the dog?

    A.Sonya’s kindness B.Sonya’s patience

C.Mike’s good temper D.Mike’s respect for Rupert.

  • 23、   Boxwars is a fast-growing entertainment phenomenon that takes the childhood pastime of playing with cardboard boxes to a whole new level. Participants use cardboard to create weapons, trucks, tanks, huge animals and so on. Then they put on monumental battle shows during which every creation is completely destroyed!

Boxwars is the brainchild of Australian friends Hoss Siegel and Ross Koger, who came up with it nearly a decade ago over drinks. They did it at a party and had a great time, and then they decided to do it again.

With each new boxwar party, the suits and structures became more and more carefully prepared until they couldn't fit in their back gardens any more. So they moved the party to a local park on Boxing Day 2002, and people who were having barbecues at the park rushed over to watch them. And that's when they realized that their silly games actually had huge entertainment value.

That was the beginning of Boxwars. They go to the same spot every year on Boxing day.

Today, Boxwars builds complex structures for each themed battle. The sport has expanded beyond Boxing Day — it is now a part of nearly every major festival or event in Australia and around the world.

Boxwars is now run by the Boxwars Council, and has lots of fans across the globe. “One of our main aims is to bring cardboard back to the consumers who deserted it in the first place without realising its true potential,” the official website states. “Cardboard, or the street name ‘box’, we quickly discovered had brilliant properties for engineering. The limits of scale and awesomeness were continuously pushed to greater commanding heights with the development of our skills with this great thing.”

1What can we infer about Boxwars?

    A.America is its birthplace.

B.It is considered to be a waste of money.

C.Its first appearance was on Boxing Day 2002.

D.All the weapons made for it will be destroyed.

2What is a main purpose mentioned in the text to run Boxwars?

A.To prepare people for possible war.

B.To exercise children’s ability of using hands.

C.To make people realize the use of deserted box.

D.To provide a chance to satisfy people's curiosity.

3What did Hoss Siegel and Ross Koger think of their idea of Boxwars at first?

A.Significant and popular. B.Fun but foolish.

C.Interesting but expensive. D.Challenging but beneficial.

4What might be the best title for the text?

    A.Boxwars — a creative design B.Boxwars — a popular game

    C.Boxwars — a new kind of box D.Boxwars — a fierce competition

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    Blowing a Few Tops

Ever stopped to consider the upside of volcanic eruptions? It’s not all death, destruction and hot liquid rock—scientists have a plan to cool the planet by simulating one such eruption.

Solar geoengineering involves simulating a volcano by spraying aerosols(气溶胶) into the atmosphere. When they combine with oxygen, droplets of sulfuric acid (硫酸) form. These droplets reflect sunlight away from Earth, cooling the planet. All good in theory, but the consequences are largely unknown and a few could be disastrous. In a study recently published in Nature Communications, researchers led by Anthony Jones, a climate scientist from the University of Exeter, found that using this technology in the Northern Hemisphere could reduce the number of tropical winds hitting the U.S. and Caribbean. But there's an annoying exchange: more winds in the Southern Hemisphere and a drought across the Sahel region of Africa. That’s because the entire climate system is linked—disrupting one region will invariably affect another. How would a nation react if another was causing its weather to get much worse? Would that be an act of war?

There is, however, a case for using solar geoengineering on a global scale. Jones says it could be used to “take the edge off” the temperature increases scientists are predicting. It could be used while the world searches for more effective strategies.

The study also highlights a far bigger problem with solar geoengineering: its complete lack of regulation. “There’s nothing that could stop one country just doing it,” Jones says. “You only need about 100 aircraft with three flights per day. It would cost $1 billion to $10 billion per year.” He adds, “It’s deeply disturbing that we have this technology that could have such a massive influence on the climate, yet there’s just no regulation to stop countries or even organizations from doing it.”

Jones cautions that there is much about the climate system we do not understand, as well as far more work that will need to be done before solar geoengineering is considered safe—or too dangerous to even discuss.
