二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Scientists say they’ve developed a system using machine learning to predict when and where lighting will strike. The research was led by engineers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland.

European researchers have estimated that between 6,000 and 24,000 people are killed by lightning worldwide each year. The strikes can also cause power outages, destroy property, damage electrical equipment and start forest fires. For these reasons, climate scientists have long sought to develop methods to predict and control lightning. In the United States and other places, ground-based sensing devices are used to identify strikes as they happen. But, no system has been created to effectively predict lightning.

The system tested in the experiments used a combination of data from weather stations and machine learning methods. The researchers developed a prediction model that was trained to recognize weather conditions that were likely to cause lightning.

The model was created with data collected over a 12-year period from 12 Swiss weather stations in cities and mountain areas. The data related to four main surface conditions: air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed.

The atmospheric, data was placed into a machine learning algorithm (算法), which compared it to records of lightning strikes. Researchers say the algorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens.

Amirhossein Mostajabi is a PhD student at the institute who led the development of the method. He said, “current systems for gathering such data are slow and complex and require costly collection equipment like radar or satellites.”

“Our method uses data that can be obtained from any weather station,” Mostajabi said. “This will improve data collection in very remote areas not covered by radar and satellite or in places where communication systems have been cut,” he added.

The researchers plan to keep developing the technology in partnership with a European effort that aims to create a lightning protection system. The effort is called the European Laser Lightning Rod project.

1Why have climate scientists tried to predict and control lighting?

    A.To collect relative data.

B.To reduce the destruction lightning has been causing.

    C.To create a scientific system.

D.To do research in relation to machine learning.

2The four mentioned surface conditions include all the following EXCEPT________.

    A.air pollution

    B.wind speed

    C.relative humidity

    D.air temperature

3What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 5 refer to?

    A.Lighting.

    B.The system being tested.

    C.The atmospheric data.

    D.The machine learning algorithm.

4What can we learn about Mostajabi from the passage?

A.He developed the method and the system himself.

B.He thinks the current systems are too slow and simple.

C.He is a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.

D.He believes their system does much better in data collection.

5Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?

A.Lightning Causes Huge World Wide Damage.

B.Scientists Test Systems to Predict Lightning.

C.Machine Learning Has Made New Breakthrough.

D.A New Approach Has Improved Data Collection.

  • 22、   When I was in third grade, my parents let me join an advanced preparatory math class, Sigma, despite the fact that I had never displayed a liking for math at school. I stepped into class on the first day thinking that I would spend a year at Sigma before leaving.

On the first day of class, we took an hour long test I merely did the best I could and tried to figure out how to do the problems I hadn't learned how to do in school. However, what I hadn't expected was to come first! Before that day, I had never believed I was good at math at all. But as the year went on, I consistently got the highest score.

When I was in eighth grade, I joined my school's math team where I was one of the top four students chosen to represent my school at a statewide middle school math competition. By that time, I had created a reputation for myself at school as a math girl. But what drew me to the math team was that it was the first community I felt like I was a real part of. It was a home where I belonged, where everyone was as excited about problem solving as I was.

I stopped going to Sigma when I was in ninth grade, but I still stayed in the math team. The math team isn't like Sigma - a place to make you believe in yourself, to take endless tests and compete to see where you are placed relative to your classmates. The math team is the community where I have pushed myself to my limits and have seen other people push themselves. And most importantly, the math team is the place where I have met some of the kindest people I know today. Thank you, math team, for giving me friends and people I will care about even after I go off to college in less than a year and a half. Thank you for making me feel loved.

1How did the author feel about math when she entered Sigma?

A.It was useful. B.It was difficult. C.It was important. D.It was uninteresting.

2What do we know about the first test at Sigma?

A.It was easy for the author.

    B.It raised the author's confidence.

C.The result met the author's expectations.

D.The author spent more than an hour on it.

3What makes the math team different from Sigma?

    A.The community atmosphere.

    B.The academic reputation.

    C.The unlimited challenge.

    D.The teaching approach.

4What's the best title for the text?

    A.No more tests.

    B.Not just a math girl.

    C.How I discovered my talent.

D.What the math team means to me.

  • 23、A Wonder Plant

Every rainy season, the mountain gorillas (大猩猩) of Central Africa migrate to the foothills and lower parts of the Virunga Mountains to feed on bamboo. For the 650 or so that remain in the wild, it’s a vital food source. 【1】 Gorillas aren’t the only locals keen on bamboo. For the people near the mountains, it’s a valuable raw material used for building houses and making household items. But in the past 100 years, resources have come under increasing pressure as populations have exploded and large areas of bamboo forest have been cleared to make way for farms.

【2】 All over the world, the ranges of many bamboo species appear to be reducing, endangering the people and animals that depend upon them. A report published by the UN Environment Programme has revealed just how profound our ignorance of global bamboo resources is.

Bamboo is a wonder plant. Its ecological role extends beyond providing food and habitat for animals. Bamboo tends to grow in stands made up of groups of individual plants that grow from root systems. Its extensive root systems are crucial in preventing water loss and soil erosion.【3】 In India 25% of paper produced is made from bamboo fiber, and in Brazil, 100,000 hectares of bamboo are grown for its production. Because of its flexibility and strength, it has traditionally been used in construction. Bamboo is often the only readily available raw material for people in many developing countries.

【4】 Ray Townsend, vice president of the British Bamboo Society, says, “Some plants are threatened because they can’t survive in the habitat—they aren’t strong enough or there aren’t enough of them, perhaps. But bamboo can take care of itself-it is strong enough to survive if left alone.【5】” When forest goes, it is transformed into something else: there isn’t anywhere for forest plants such as bamboo to grow if you create a cattle grass land.

    A.Sadly, this isn’t a single story.

B.It is the physical disturbance that is the threat to bamboo.

C.Until now, bamboo has been viewed as a second-class plant.

D.Without it, their chances of survival would be reduced significantly.

E.Besides, bamboo’s most immediate significance lies in its economic value.

F.More than a billion people rely on bamboo for either their shelter or income.

G.Despite bamboo’s value in economy and ecology, its situation is all the more worrying.

  • 24、If something that you’re doing doesn’t challenge you, then it doesn’t change you. We all need some normal stress in our lives, after all. 【1】 So challenge the following limits:

    1. Figure out what you’re scared of and do it continuously.

If you’re a salesman, and you’re scared of talking to people personally or over the phone now, instead of being scared and thinking you’ll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone and make a call. 【2】 But don’t stop on the first try! Eventually, you can look at fear in the eye and say, “Go on. I’m not scared!”

    2. Take a class for a hobby you’ve been wanting to develop.

Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while performing this. 【3】 Apart from helping you challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby may also give you extra income.

    3. Set aside at least nine minutes a day for physical exercise.

【4】 A simple 9-minute run around your neighborhood can do wonders for yourself. Exercise can not only help you keep your regular weight, but also make you feel better about yourself.

    4. Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people.

Don’t just limit yourself to your fellow travelers—try to connect with the service staff. You never know what kind of people they’re going to be. Get out of your house or go online right now to book your class. 【5】

A.Someone may hang up on you.

    B.You should do it continuously.

C.You don’t need to go to the gym.

D.Running in the gym may be a better choice.

E.Start to travel now and learn to challenge yourself.

F.Take a class for a hobby you’ve been wanting to develop.

G.You can never see any improvement if you stick to your comfort zone.

  • 25、According to Greek legend, in ancient Athens a man noticed the great storyteller Aesop playing childish games with some little boys. He laughed and made fun of Aesop, asking him why he wasted his time in such ______ games.

Aesop responded by ______ a bow, loosening its string, and placing it on the ground. Then he said to the critical man, “Now, ______ the riddle (迷), if you can. Tell us what the unstrung bow means.”

The man looked at it for several minutes but had no idea about what ______ Aesop was trying to make. Aesop ______, “If you keep a bow always bent, it will break finally; but if you let it go loose, it will be more ______ for use when you want it.”

So it is with us. Our minds and bodies are like the ______. When often under the ______ of everyday life, we can finally break. We need to loosen up; we need time to take the pressure off and relax.

Former baseball pitcher (投球手) Dutch Leonard might have put it a little differently. He once said that the ______ of great pitching is not speed or the ability to throw curves (曲线球). It’s the “change of pace”. Even the ______ batter (击球手) will soon learn how to hit a pitcher who continually throws the same kind of pitch. But it’s ______ to hit a pitcher who changes the pace of pitching. That ______ of pace gives a pitcher an advantage over the other pitchers.

A change of pace also gives us a(n) ______ in life. Taking time to watch the clouds, enjoy a breeze, take a walk, read just slowdown is ______ if we are to be our best later. And a regular day of rest is as important as regular sleep. It’s a ______ of taking the pressure off.

To be your best, make sure you change your pace. It may just be the change you need.
