二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Society looks down on people who collect the wastes of others, but what they don’t realize is that they could get more money in one day than what they get in one week working at their daily job from selling other people’s unwanted goods.

I am no “make-money-quick guru” but I have made a couple thousand dollars from selling what others throw out to the garbage. As the saying goes: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

You don’t have to start a business. You could simply sell second-hand things people give away and profit from it. In my high school days, I had my first experience selling an old pre-loved Logitech keyboard to a buyer on Gumtree.com.au for $50. I remember how exciting it was for me to make money from something I no longer needed. I technically made a $50 profit in less than an hour.

How to make $1,000 with $0 in a day?

Go on platforms such as Facebook market or Gumtree and find things people are giving away for free in your local area, then sell them. I found an abundance of household items like cupboards, shelves, mirror cabinet, and chairs that sell very well. Don’t worry what people think of you, remember that you could get a few hundred for those.

Reinvest your money and buy something with a higher value that someone might be happy to get rid of, and sell that for a profit of $600, etc. Your action is not just about making money, but also seeing it as using the earth’s resources efficiently and not wasting them in the trash.

If there is one thing I learned from this practice, it is that: there is always someone out there who considers one man’s trash as treasure, no matter what the item is.

    【1】What may a “make-money-quick guru” do in paragraph 2?

A.A person who works in a company.

B.A person who throws unwanted things.

C.A person who teaches people how to make great profit.

D.A person who makes money by selling second-hand things.

【2】How did the writer start his business?

    A.By collecting others’ trash.

    B.By selling his old things.

    C.By buying valuable things.

    D.By giving away useless things.

【3】Why did the writer suggest others buy more valuable things?

A.To collect them for later use.

B.To sell them and get a higher profit.

    C.To learn from the practice.

D.To get rid of the unwanted things.

【4】Which of the following could be the best title for the text?

    A.Sell Unwanted Things

B.Make Money in a New Business

    C.Live an Environmentally Friendly Life

    D.One Person’s Trash, Another Person’s Cash

  • 22、The extraordinary Eastgate Building in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city, is said to be the only one in the world to use the same cooling and heating principles like the termite mound(白蚁堆).

Architect Mick Pearce used precisely the same strategy when designing the Eastgate Building, which has no air-conditioning and almost no heating. The building—the country’s largest commercial and shopping mall—uses less than 10% of the energy of a traditional building of its size. The Eastgate’s owners saved $3.5 million on a $36 million building because an air-conditioning plant didn’t have to be imported.

The mall is actually two buildings linked by bridges across a shady, glass-roofed atrium(天井) open to the air. Fans suck fresh air in from the atrium, blow it upstairs through hollow spaces under the floors and from there into each office through baseboard vents(通风口). As it rises and warms, it is drawn out via ceiling vents and finally exists through forty-eight brick chimneys.

During summer’s cool nights, big fans blow air through the building seven times an hour to cool the empty floors. By day, smaller fans blow two changes of air an hour through the building to circulate(流通) the air which has been in contact with the cool floors. For winter days, there are small heaters in the vents.

This is all possible only because Harare is 1600 feet above sea level, has cloudless skies, little dampness and rapid temperature swings (摆幅)—days as warm as 31 commonly drop to 14 at night. “You couldn’t do this in New York, with its fantastically hot summers and fantastically cold winters,” Pearce said.

The engineering firm of Ove Arup&Partners monitors daily temperatures. It is found that the temperature of the building has generally stayed between 23 and 25, with the exception of the annual hot period just before the summer rains in October and three days in November, when a doorkeeper accidentally switched off the fans at night. And the air is fresh—far more so than in air-conditioned buildings, where up to 30% of the air is recycled.

1Why was Eastgate cheaper to be built than a traditional building?

    A. It was designed in a smaller size.

    B. No air conditioners were fixed in.

    C. Its heating system was less advanced.

    D. It used rather different building materials.

2What does it refer to in Paragraph 3?

    A. Fresh air from outside.

    B. Heat in the building.

    C. Hollow space.

    D. Baseboard vent.

3Why would a building like Eastgate Not work efficiently in New York?

    A. New York has less clear skies as Harare.

    B. Its dampness affects the circulation of air.

    C. New York covers a larger area than Harare.

    D. Its temperature changes seasonally rather than daily.

4The data in the last paragraph suggests Eastgate’s temperature control system_____.

    A. allows a wide range of temperatures

    B. functions well for most of the year

    C. can recycle up to 30% of the air

    D. works better in hot seasons

  • 23、The Best Time to Visit These Pricey Destinations

If you’re going to shell out on a vacation, then you might as well do it right. With that in mind, we’ve asked a few experts for tips on when to visit some of the most expensive places across the globe. Here’s what they had to say.

    Botswana

Hotels in Botswana are second only to Dubai in terms of average cost per person, per night, at around $257. To make the most of your time there, consider an autumn visit, suggests Sarah Faith of Responsible Travel. “The heat peaks in October—this is the best time to go and see wild animals as they gather around in the Okavango Delta”, says Faith. While wildlife viewing is incredible in Botswana, there’s much to enjoy away from the wilderness, too.”

    New York City

New York is the second-most expensive holiday destination overall and the most expensive place to dine out, with an average meal for two costing around $67. Garrett, the CEO of Discover New York, suggests, “October and June have gorgeous weather, so outdoor activities are a good choice, with sailing, in-depth neighborhood walks and biking.” For great value, she advises traveling in January and February, when the city offers tons of indoor activities, from art galleries and Broadway shows to indoor sports events and thousands of dining options.

    Sydney

With its incredible surfing beaches, dining scene and friendly locals, Sydney is always a favorite of travelers. It’s also expensive. Generally, the shoulder seasons (fall and spring in the U.S.) have the most comfortable weather and fewer crowds than the December-to-February high season. But some months have particular appeal, according to Stuart Rigg, Australian travel specialist for Southern Crossings. April, for example, falls into the low season, which means you’ll find hotel deals along with weather that’s typically “very pleasant,” Rigg says. “Sydney also has some great events during this low season period,” he adds.

    London

Petulia Melideo, who runs Context’s London walking tours, advises booking well in advance for lower hotel rates, and suggests a wintry visit. “November is a great time for London. The weather is still tolerable—and if it gets too chilly, there are plenty of cozy pubs to pop into,” she says. Other good times to visit include June, which means fewer tourists.

1According to the passage, October is the best time to travel to________.

    A. New York and Botswana   B. London and Sydney

    C. New York and London   D. Sydney and Botswana

    2Visitors to Sydney __________.

    A. may find cheap hotels in the shoulder seasons

    B. can enjoy wonderful beaches and dining scene

    C. will experience the most comfortable weather in December

    D. should avoid the low season because of the unpleasant weather

3Which is the desirable month if you’d like to visit London without too many crowds?

    A. April.   B. June.

    C. November.   D. December.

  • 24、Nowadays some companies are attempting to grow seafood from cells in a laboratory, rather than harvesting it from the oceans.

With massive problems with overfishing worldwide and growing demand for supplies of seafood, the way fish currently makes its way to our plates is unable to work long-term. Between 1961 and 2016, the average annual increase in global food fish consumption outpaced population growth. This isn't good for us, the fish, or the environment as a whole.

Cellular (细胞) seafood could be the answer. Just don't make the mistake of calling it lab-grown fish. "None of us in the industry would call it lab-grown seafood,” says Mike Selden, CEO of Finless Foods. “Finless Foods isn't lab-grown. We experiment and create our science in the lab, but don't produce there. Our products come from a production facility much like a farm. We just don't need the animals to create the nutrition."

Finless Foods is a biotech company located in San Francisco. Since 2017, it's been working to bring to market a species of cultured bluefin tuna (人工养殖的蓝鳍金枪鱼) created using cellular technology. Shortly after that, the company produced its first pound of bluefin tuna meat for a cost of about $19,000. Since then, however, it's been working to bring that price down.

Selden terms what Finless Foods is doing as “cell-based seafood”. “We're growing seafood from real seafood cells,” Selden explained. “We take cells from a fish once, and then grow them endlessly from that. We do the same process that happens inside of a fish and make it happen outside of a fish.”

The goal of cellular seafood isn't, its supporters claim, to entirely disturb the current seafood industry. Instead, it's intended to augment it — and perhaps to help reduce overfishing and illegal fishing. And when it comes to certain sea species, this laboratory-based approach could help create a plentiful supply of certain fish without endangering the survival of certain                                        overfished species as a whole.

【1】What is the second paragraph intended to show?

    A.The problem with global overfishing.

    B.The decreasing food fish consumption.

C.The negative environmental effects of seafood.

D.The importance of producing cellular seafood.

【2】Why is Mike Selden mentioned in the passage?

A.To explain the concept of lab-grown seafood.

B.To show people's passion for cellular seafood.

C.To describe his company's devotion to cellular seafood.

D.To introduce the features of producing cellular seafood.

【3】What problem is Finless Foods trying to solve with cellular seafood?

    A.Its poor nutrient content.

B.The high cost of its production.

    C.Its potential negative health effects.

    D.The complicated production process.

【4】What does the underlined word “augment” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Cancel.

    B.Replace.

    C.Expand.

    D.Tolerate.

三、完形填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 25、The true purpose of a business, Peter Drucker said, is to create and keep customers. “Customer value” has several definitions. I use the ______ to mean the total lifetime value of a company’s customer base. Companies can increase this value by ______ more customers, earning more business from existing ones, keeping them longer, making their experience simpler through digital improvements and so on. ______ leaders have long understood the importance of concentrating on customer value rather than pursuing short-term profits or quarterly earnings, and they’ve become enduring customer loyalty leaders in the process. It’s worth noting that a number of loyalty-leading companies are able to ______ shareholder pressure, or avoid it altogether, because they are founder-led, customer-owned, or not publicly traded.

Companies can ______ customer value in a variety of ways: To increase ______, enterprise software companies sometimes charge corporate customers change fees that can raise the total cost of ownership to as much as three times the original price. To reduce operating costs, restaurant chains sometimes ______ frozen and precooked ingredients in place of fresh and made-to-order food. The resulting profits may look good on the income statement. Such strategies may even lead to short-term earnings growth. But they also ______ potential customers and encourage disloyalty.

Given the importance of customer value, leaders should track it as much as they track other key assets (资产), such as buildings, machinery, and marketable securities. They also should reveal it in their quarterly and annual earnings releases so that investors can make ______ judgments about company performance and how it compares with that of industry peers. But most companies ________believe that measuring customer value is too difficult or costly. They continue to rely on a centuries-old accounting tradition that emphasizes physical and financial assets, and neither income statements nor balance sheets offer much ______ into the value of a company’s customers.

As investors wake up to the importance of customer value, however, many growth-stage companies now direct investors’ attention to ______ in growing the value of their customer base. Some public companies increasingly report various types of customer value metrics (指标). One of the UK’s top energy suppliers E.ON, ______, reports year-over-year customer counts in its financial report. “As a customer-focused company,” E.ON noted, “we see customer value as crucial to our success.”

This is a start, but because there are no customer-value reporting standards or requirements, investors still have a(n) ______ picture. The minority of companies that do provide customer value information decide for themselves what to disclose. ______, firms may calculate customer metrics differently or change them to tell a desired story, or simply stop reporting them if they fail to go with the company’s preferred narrative.
