二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Doctors say you had better use it before you lose it. The more you sit each day, the more chance you have of getting sick.

Richard Rosenkranz of Kansas State University was among the researchers. He said people who sat for long periods were at great risk of diseases when compared with those who sat less. He said that was especially true for some chronic (慢性的) diseases.

Richard Rosenkranz studied the relationship between sitting and chronic diseases in middle-aged Australian men. He worked with researchers from the University of Western Sydney. They examined the health records of more than 63,000 men from New South Wales. The men were between the ages of 45 and 65. The men reported about what diseases they had, or did not have. And they kept record of the amount of time each day that they sat.

The study also showed that exercising every morning for 30 minutes did not reduce the health risk if you spend the next eight hours sitting at the desk. Mr. Rosenkranz said it was important to make sure you exercise. But he said it was also important to find ways not to sit so much during the day.

Many jobs today require sitting and working at the desk all day. James Levine works at the Mayo Clinic in the United Sates. He suggests working while standing at high table some of the time instead of sitting at a desk. Dr. Levine also suggests standing while using the telephone or eating. Or he advises walking with the people you work with for an on-foot meeting. And he notes that if you spend more time on your feet, you may have muscle activity that helps burn fats and sugars in your body.

【1】What does the underlined sentence in the first paragraph imply?

A.Doctors should treat all the patients well.

B.Doctors should make use of every method.

C.One should value his health before he loses it.

D.One should depend on himself to keep healthy.

【2】How did Richard Rosenkranz make the study?

A.By examining some records and reports.

    B.By making some laboratory experiments.

C.By talking with the doctors and patients.

D.By watching the men’s daily performance.

【3】According to Dr. Levine, in order to avoid the harm of long-time sitting, what should people do?

    A.Exercise more often.

    B.Change their jobs.

    C.Stay away from the desk.

    D.Stand or walk more.

【4】Where does this text probably come from?

    A.A fashion magazine.

    B.A health magazine.

    C.A biology textbook.

    D.A life guide.

  • 22、   Scientists have discovered a “monster black hole” so massive that, in theory, it shouldn’t exist. It’s a stellar (恒星) black hole — the type that forms after stars die, collapse, and explode. Researchers had previously believed that the size limit was no more than 20 times the mass of our sun because as these stars die, they lose most of their mass through explosions that expel (排出) matter and gas swept away by stellar winds.

This theory has now been toppled by LB-1, the newly discovered black hole. Located about 15,000 light years away, it has a mass 70 times greater than our sun, according to a press release from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The findings were published by Chinese researchers in the journal Nature on Wednesday. “Black holes of such mass should not even exist in our galaxy, according to most of the current models of stellar evolution,” said Liu Jifeng, head of the team that made the discovery.

“LB-1 is twice as massive as what we thought possible. Now theorists will have to take up the challenge of explaining its formation.”

Scientists are now scratching their heads at how LB-1 got so huge.

The Chinese team has proposed a number of theories. LB-1’s sheer size suggests that it “was not formed from the collapse of only one star,” the study said — instead, it could potentially be two smaller black holes orbiting each other.

Another possibility is that it formed from “fallback supernova.” This is when a supernova — the last stage of an exploding star — ejects (排出) material during the explosion, which then falls back into the supernova, creating a black hole.

This fallback formation is theoretically possible, but scientists have never been able to prove or observe it. If this is how LB-1 formed, then we may have “direct evidence for this process” for the first time, the study said.

There are several types of black holes and stellar black holes like LB-1 are on the smaller side, according to NASA. Supermassive black holes are much bigger — they can be billions of times the mass of our sun.

Scientists believe supermassive black holes may be connected to the formation of galaxies, as they often exist at the center of the mass star stems but it is still not clear exactly how, or which form first.

1Why does the writer write the article?

A.To report the great achievement Chinese scientists have made in black hole theory.

B.To inform the readers of the basic knowledge about the black hole.

C.To share with the readers the new development of the black hole discovery.

D.To demonstrate the significance of discovering new black holes for science.

2What does the underlined word “toppled” mean in the second paragraph?

    A.overturned B.supported C.suspected D.tested

3Which of the following about LB-1 is true to the passage?

A.It is the biggest black hole ever discovered.

B.It lost only a small part of its mass through explosion.

C.It couldn’t have been formed from the collapse of one star,

D.Its discovery may lead to some breakthrough in the “fallback formation theory”.

4Which of the following is right according to the passage?

A.If the sun in our galaxy dies some of its mass will be taken away by stellar winds.

B.A massive supernova will be formed and then exploded if the sun in our galaxy dies.

C.“The Milky Way” was formed after a supermassive black hole collapsed and exploded.

D.If “the Milky Way” dies, a supermassive black hole will be formed after its death.

  • 23、   Nowadays, we can read almost all “truths” on social media sites. But are they really reliable? Sites such as the micro messaging service Twitter, the social networking site Facebook and the photo-sharing app Instagram might “misrepresent the real world,” according to a study by computer scientists from McGill University and Carnegie Mellon University.

The scientists warn that gathering information about public views and trends from these sites is unwise. There are still large parts of the population who do not take part in social media activities. Also, there's a risk that many social media users are under- represented. Instagram, for example, appeals to younger adults in urban areas while Pinterest is used mainly by females aged 25 to 34. And only 5 percent of Twitter users are over 65 years old, according Io the study.

However, this is not the only issue, according to the scientific team. The design of a website can influence how people behave online, creating what the researchers call “Internet bias.” For example, micro-blogging sites such as Weibo promote “popular” stories. It saves time for some, but it also limits readers' choice of what they see. In the end, many people open those stories and make them more “popular.” But it's not because they choose those stories. Rather, it is because the content is right in front of them.

Besides, it's possible that not everyone on your social networks is real. There might actually be a few fake accounts among them. Fake “bots” pretend to be human and are often included when measuring or predicting human behaviors online.

The findings might be more important than you would think, since many social media studies “are used to inform and justify decisions and investments among the public and in industry and government,” said Derek Ruths, assistant Professor at McGill's School of Computer Science.

If the team is right, you might have to think carefully the next time you say, “It's true, you know; I read it on Weibo.”

1Why does the author mention Twitter, Facebook and Instagram?

A.Because they are the best social media sites today.

B.Because they are not in favor of the current study.

C.Because the public are sharing truths on these sites.

D.Because information on these sites may not be reliable.

    2How is the passage developed?

A.By giving examples. B.By making comparisons.

C.By dividing into groups. D.By analyzing cause and effect.

3Which word can best describe the author's attitude toward information on social media sites?

    A.Ambiguous. B.Favorable.

    C.Disagreeable. D.Cautious

4What's the author's main purpose in writing the passage?

A.To analyze why information gathered from social media sites may not be trustworthy.

B.To remind readers of things they should watch out for when using social media.

C.To point out the advantages and disadvantages of social media.

D.To recommend popular social networking sites for readers.

  • 24、“Can I hug you?” community nurse Joyce Jebambula asks with a smile as she welcomes me back to her village. “Of course,” I say as I put my arms around her. It’s an unbelievable moment. Just at the height of the outbreak more than a year ago, there was an “avoid body contact” rule here. It’s now been removed.

One of the most challenging parts of reporting this outbreak over the past 18 months is that I haven't been able to touch anyone in the worst-affected countries. When Ebola(埃博拉病毒) survivors described in tears describing losing their families, I had to almost sit on my hands to avoid reaching out to comfort them.

The outbreak was declared over in Sierra Leone on 7 November. I returned for the celebrations. But despite reaching this long-awaited milestone, all is not well.

Ibrahim Koroma, 21, clings to (紧紧抓住) his survivor's certificate (证明) outside the home. All 17 of his family are now dead. The certificate is one of his most prized possessions. "He does not pose any risk to the community" it reads.

Ibrahim tells me how his landlord has allowed him to stay in one of the rooms of his former family home until the end of the year. He says he doesn't know what he'll do after that. He does some part-time work, relying heavily on help from neighbors. His two little sisters and little brother died in the very room where he now sleeps. He says he often lies awake thinking about them, feeling very bad.

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa was the worst on record. In past outbreaks there had only been a few hundred deaths and a few hundred survivors. It was thought Ebola could live for only three months. But research has now shown it can linger for at least nine months. Scientists are still trying to find how long it could be infectious.

【1】When interviewing Ebola survivors the author _______.

    A. couldn’t touch them with hands.

    B. kept comforting them with hands

    C. held their hands to show sympathy

    D. couldn’t help comforting them with hands

2Ibrahim Koroma values his certificate because it_________

    A. is a sign of his contributions

    B. shows he is a healthy person

    C. has been the only one for patients so far

    D. is a great honor to have it in his village

3We can learn from the passage that___________

    A. Ebola can only survive a few days

    B. Ibrahim’s neighbours treat him badly

    C. Ebola still influences Ibrahim’s life

    D. there were once 17 people in Ibrahim’s family

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇 60词左右的内容概要。

China Needs To Fight Its Massive Food Waste To Combat Climate Change

China is facing a massive food waste crisis. Over 6% of China's total food production is already lost before reaching consumers, and restaurants in Chinese cities throw away an average of a third of food served. Amid the climate crisis and an already vulnerable global food system exposed by the current Covid-19 pandemic, it is vital to tackle food waste in Asia's largest country.

Asia currently drives over half of global food waste, and China is one of the leading countries contributing an enormous amount of discarded food each year. According to a recent report conducted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and local NGO partners, Chinese cities produce 25% of the world's municipal solid waste - most of which is food. When examining restaurants and school canteens, data showed that one third of all the food served is thrown away.

Why does food waste pose a massive challenge to the planet? Besides global hunger, the way that food waste is managed contributes to driving climate change. Much of the China's food waste ends up in landfills, which contributes significant amounts of methane, a major greenhouse gas that causes global heating. Scientists have found that every kilogram of landfilled solid waste releases its equivalent(同等的)weight of carbon dioxide equivalent(等价物).

With cities contributing to the most food waste in the country, they need to be at the front lines to address the problem. Projects across other cities in Asia can serve as examples on how to reduce food waste, such as Singapore's Lumitics, a tech-forward startup, which has created a food waste tracker that can attach to bins in commercial kitchens. The product aims to help F & B and hospitality businesses analyze the type of food that is being thrown away the most in order to launch a targeted campaign to reduce the amount of discarded food.

But let's be clear - food waste is not a problem in China or Asia alone. With over 10% of annual global carbon emissions coming driven by food waste, the entire world needs to step up its efforts to fight the issue.
