21、For many of us, summertime means road trips to the beach or mountains, or at the very least some additional dust on the outside of our vehicle. The extra dirt leads us to do one of two things: wash our car in the driveway or head to the car wash. But which choice is better for the environment?
The main concerns with either choice are the amount of fresh water used and the types of chemicals used to get rid of the dirt. Both of these concerns can be closely monitored when washing the car at home, says Katy Gresh, spokeswoman for the Southwest Region of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. She advises car owners to keep a set amount of water in a container for the entire wash. “You don’t want to leave the water running or use more than you need for the job,” she says. But even following this piece of advice comes with an environmental risk: Washing your car in the driveway gets the dirty water into drains (下水道).
“Drains are not made for treating waste.” says John Schombert, executive director of 3 Rivers Wet Weather. Even when car owners use natural soaps to wash their car, Schombert says they are probably ineffective in breaking down grease(油脂)anyway.
The commercial car wash knows full well the rules regarding wastewater in drains. According to the International Carwash Association (ICA), professional car washes must use special water treatment systems. These processes not only keep the dirty water out of drains and regular water treatment systems, but also work to reduce water usage at commercial facilities.
As experts point out, cleaning our car at home can use 100 gallons of water. Compare that to self-service car washes, which allow you to use only about 17 or 18 gallons of water. And most full-service car washes average about 30 to 45 gallons of water per vehicle.
【1】What does Katy suggest people do about washing cars?
A.Use soft toothbrushes.
B.Save treated water.
C.Put aside some water.
D.Avoid using chemicals.

A.Rules of handling wastewater.
B.Advantages of professional car washes.
C.Processes of getting rid of dirty water.
D.Drawbacks of water treatment systems.
【4】Which mehod of car washing consumes the least water?
A.The full-service car washes.

22、Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your choice of sport might have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf (高尔夫), as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemical and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often regarded as the major reason of serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sports you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements (代替物) for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.
【1】What do we know about golf from the passage?
A.It needs water and electricity to keep its courses green.
B.It is not played in Portugal and Spain at all.
C.It causes water shortages around the world.
D.It pollutes the earth with chemicals and wastes.
【2】Why does the author use power walking as an example?
A.Because it gets people close to the nature.
B.Because it uses fewer resources.
C.Because it improves our health.
D.Because it is free.
【3】Which of the following does the author most probably support?
A.Playing golf in the countryside.
B.Working out in a gym.
C.Cycling (骑自行车) around a lake.
D.Swimming in a sports center.
【4】What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To show us the harm that sports do to people.
B.To discuss the influence of popular sports.
C.To introduce different types of environment-friendly sports.
D.To encourage us to go in for green sports.
23、A recently published paper finds that following a Mediterranean diet for three weeks can help reduce depression and anxiety among young adults.
In the study, participants in the test group were instructed to eat about six more servings of fruits and vegetables per week, compared with the control group. In addition, they were told to get per week three servings of fish besides three recommended servings per day of whole grains. As for milk, the recommendation was three servings per week, unsweetened. Participants were also asked to consume three tablespoons of nuts and seeds per week, as well as two tablespoons of olive oil per day.
“One of the shortcomings of nutrition science is that it often relies on asking people to recall what they ate and how they felt in the past. Given our failing memories, these data can be unreliable,” says Heather Francis, one of the researchers. “But our study included a device, called spectrophotometer, which can detect the degree of yellowness in the skin, which can precisely monitor the intake of carotenoids (类胡萝卜素), which the participants get from their food.”
“We have highly consistent and extensive evidence from around the globe linking Mediterranean diets to reduced depression risk,” says Felice Jacka, a professor at Deakin University in Australia who was not involved in the study. “I think the next step is to show how diets can reduce depression.”
However, it’s almost impossible to unravel how diet changes may help improve mental health according to the strict standard in medical research, where participants do not know that they are part of the group assigned to take the medicine or the placebo (安慰剂).
“In a diet study, there’s no way to ‘blind’ the participants so that they don’t know if they’re getting the ‘medicine’ or ‘placebo’,” says Heather Francis. “And research has shown that if people are told that they’re doing something that may make them less depressed, they will indeed report less depression. That’s known as the placebo effect.”
【1】Each day, the young adults following the Mediterranean diet were instructed to eat ________.
A.unsweetened milk and nuts
B.fish and fruits
C.vegetables and whole grains
D.olive oil and seeds
【2】What does the underlined word “unravel” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Notice.

A.It is impossible to avoid the placebo effect in his study.
B.Felice Jacka’s comment about his study is very misleading.
C.His testing method is perfect and the conclusion is very reliable.
D.The so-called placebo effect is even unavoidable in medical research.

24、 An increasing part of the world is becoming artificially lit. Artificial light is often seen as a sign of progress: the march of civilization shines a light in the dark; it takes back the night. But some scientists argue that unnaturally bright nights are bad not just for astronomers but also for nocturnal (夜间的) animals and even for human health.
Now research shows the night is getting even brighter. From 2012 to 2016 the earth’s artificially lit area expanded by about 2.2 percent a year, according to a study published last November in Science Advances. However, the measurement does not include light from most of the energy–efficient LED lamps that have been replacing sodium-vapor (钠气灯) technology in cities all over the world ,says Christopher Kyba, a postdoctoral researcher at the German Research Center for Geosciences in Potsdam.
The new data came from a NASA satellite instrument called the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIRS). It can measure long wavelengths of light, such as those produced by traditional yellow-and-orange sodium-vapor street lamps. But VIIRS cannot see the short-wavelength blue light produced by white LEDs. This light has been shown to disturb human sleep cycles and nocturnal animals’ behavior.
The team believes the ongoing switch to LEDs caused already bright countries such as Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the U.S. to register as having stable levels of lighting in the VIIRS data. In contrast, most nations in South America, Africa and Asia brightened, suggesting increases in the use of traditional lighting.
In 2016, a study showed that one third of the world’s population currently lives under skies too bright to see the Milky Way at night. Between 2012 and 2016 the median nation pumped out 15 percent more long-wavelength light as its GDP increased by 13 percent. Overall, counties' total light production correlated with their GDP.
【1】Which of the following can best describe artificial light?
A.Convenient but unnatural. B.Useful but energy-consuming.
C.Progressive but uncomfortable. D.Civilized but harmful.
【2】What can we know about the already bright countries?
A.Traditional lighting is not used in those countries.
B.LED lights are increasingly used in those countries.
C.Efforts to reduce harmful light work in those countries.
D.People do enjoy stable lighting in those countries.
【3】Why does the author mention “the median nation” in the last paragraph?
A.To show artificial light has an association with GDP.
B.To demonstrate GDP plays an important part in the median nation.
C.To stress the median nation was to blame for the light problem.
D.To suggest artificial light should be banned in the future.
