"My brother Andrew has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?” "We don't sell a miracle here, child. I'm sorry, " the salesman said with a smile.
"Listen, if it isn't enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs."
A well-dressed man heard it and asked, "What kind of a miracle does your brother need?"
"I don't know, “she answered with her eyes full of tears. "He's really sick and mum says he needs an operation. But my daddy can't pay for it, so I have brought all my money."
“How much do you have?" asked the man. "$ 1.11, but I can try and get some more," she answered.
"Well, what luck? smiled the man. " $ 1.11, the price of a miracle for your little brother. "
He took up the girl's hand and said, "Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's see if I have the kind of miracle you need."

22、My name is Pablo. I think I’m a lucky guy. I have a good family, and we live in a nice neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. People travel here from many countries for their vacations. We have beautiful beaches, hotels, restaurants, shopping and sports.
However, in my beautiful hometown, there are also very poor neighborhoods. These areas are crowded and have a lot of crime (犯罪). Life is terrible for many of the children in these areas. Some don’t really have a childhood because they’re homeless and live on the streets. They don’t have education. They don’t have enough food. Many use drugs or have illnesses or other problems.
Last year, I came back to Puerto Vallarta from my university in Mexico City, I spent one year as a volunteer with an organization called Outreach International. They have several programs. I volunteered for one program to help street children.
I worked in a home for street children (all boys, at this one). At this home, the boys have a place to sleep and three meals daily. The home keeps the boys off the streets. It shows them another way of life. As a volunteer, I helped to prepare meals. I taught games—such as basketball, football and art. I helped the kids with their homework. These kids can be fun. They have a lot of energy, but they’re also really tough (坚韧的). Their long and difficult time on the streets make them strong and not always “sweet little children”.
At this boys’ home, I met two other volunteers—Brian from Canada and Greg from Australia. In many ways, we were very similar. We were the same age, came from good homes and had a good education. They were both college students, like me. We became very good friends. Now, we email each other.
It was the best—and most difficult—year of my life. I learned a lot that year.

23、Fear of missing out or FOMO is characterized by “a desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing”.
Researchers have found that FOMO leads us to check social media more frequently, leading to a negative cycle that can be hard to break. 【1】 Your mood will be easily influenced by others and your life starts to be controlled by the outside world. However, the situation can be improved if you take the following advice.
【2】 Try to reduce our screen time, focus on building your own path to success and do what you like. Live in the moment, you will find nothing is missing out in our life!
It is common to post on social media to keep a record of the fun things you do. 【3】 If this is the case, you may try to keep a personal journal of your best memories, either online or on paper. Keeping a journal can help you to shift your focus from public approval to private appreciation of the things that make your life great. 【4】
You may find yourself seeking a greater connection when you are feeling depressed or anxious, and this is healthy. Feelings of loneliness are actually our brain’s way of telling us that we want to seek out greater connections with others and increase our sense of belonging. 【5】 Talking with families, making plans with a good friend, or creating a group outing that can help you to shake that feeling that you are missing out.
A.You actually can’t miss anything.
B.Especially the young are addicted to the social media.
C.Rather than focusing on what you lack, try noticing what you have.
D.This shift can sometimes help you to get out of the cycle of FOMO.
E.As a result, it will lead to feelings of depression, loneliness, and boredom.
F.However, you may find yourself noticing too much about people’s opinion on your experiences online.
G.Rather than connect with people on social media, why not arrange to meet up with someone in person?
24、The US Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) recently asked scientists, lawyers, social scientists and other experts to consider some of these ethical dimensions. To give two examples: on privacy, as we let more listening devices into our homes, how do we prevent the data they collect falling into the wrong hands through hacking (黑客) or simply being sold between companies without us receiving any money? Another example: mixed reality, including virtual reality, will become pervasive in the next few years. As we move from headsets to what the IEEE committee describes as “more subtle and integrated sensory enhancements” we will use technology to live in an illusory world in many aspects of our lives. How do we balance the rights of the individual, control over our virtual identity, and the need to live and interact on a face-to-face basis while being empowered to live rich lives in mixed reality?
There is, of course, always a tension between innovation and regulation. But it can often seem that giant steps are taken in technology with minimal public discussion. Take the self-driving car: although it may be safer than human drivers and is likely to save more than a million lives a year worldwide, it will also take jobs from drivers, traffic police, sign-makers, car-repair companies, carmakers and more. Is this a bargain we want to make? In taking that decision, have we given thought to a car that knows everywhere we go, decides routes, perhaps, based on paid advertisements from shops along the way—and listens and sees everything we do on board? What will happen to that data and can it be kept safe?
Additionally, while some worry about the uncommon “trolley problem” of whom the car should choose to hit in a freak accident—an old lady or a mother and baby—perhaps the more frequent issue will be how we find out what the algorithm (算法) was thinking at the time of an accident, because AIs (Artificial Intelligence) are self-learning and devise their own strategies.
Similar concerns are emerging over the internet of things. Robot vacuum-cleaners already plot cleaning cycles using computer-aided vision that, for some models, is relayed to their manufacturers. As more things at home become connected, they will be hackable and the data they collect sellable.
It’s time for some messy, democratic discussions about the future of AI.
【1】What is the purpose of the two examples in Paragraph 1?
A.To cast some light on hacking in our modern life.
B.To lead the reader to think of ethical issues brought by hi-tech.
C.To lead in the following example concerning the self-driving car.
D.To list the existing problems that caught the attention of experts.
【2】What does the underlined word “pervasive” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Intelligent.
B.Powerful.
C.Widespread.
D.Skillful.
【3】What is the author’s attitude towards the big steps in technology?
A.Positive.
B.Negative.
C.Cautious.
D.Unclear.
【4】How does the author support his claim?
A.By exposing some underlying problems in high-tech.
B.By calling on people to move away from innovation.
C.By illustrating AI’s abilities in self-learning strategies.
D.By displaying our computer-aided life in future.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
We all could say that we have bad days to endure as we go through life, but what does it take to have a really good day?
Some would suggest that a day would be great if everything they did turned out well, or they got exactly what they needed. On the other hand , have you ever thought that what you may give someone else may be the best day you ever had especially when you put someone else's well-being or happiness first on your list?
There is special warmth available to you and that warmth can come from a helping hand, doing a small favor for a total stranger , or even a smile.
I recall a day recently when I had to go to the hospital for an appointment because I wasn't feeling well and my doctor sent me to a specialist to try and determine the cause.
As I drove to the hospital, I admittedly was feeling gloomy and certainly wasn't on top of my game. As I approached the hospital, I began my search for a parking spot, a spot that was hard to come with everyone else trying to do the same thing. I finally found a spot not too far from the entrance to the hospital.
As I got out and brought my change out of my pocket, I noticed a man looking somewhat upset standing in front of a parking meter two cars away. He seemed to be searching his pockets for what I supposed was change for the meter.
Although, I really didn't feel that great, I thought that I should at least go over to him and find out if I could help him. As I approached him, he turned to look at me, feeling at a loss not knowing what to do. I asked him if he had a problem I could help with, and he said, without hesitation, that he had no change at all because he left it in his house only thinking about visiting his sick wife.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
Faced with such a situation, I reached into my pocket.
