  • 21、How to Invent a Product

Are you convinced to create a popular life-changing product? Then don’t wait! Take these simple steps to make your very own invention and get it out on the markets.

Brainstorm ideas. The first step in becoming an inventor and coming up with a truly unique and useful product is to brainstorm ideas. Try making a list of all the things that interest you.1,so keep a journal with you at all times, to constantly add new items to your possible-invention list. Keeping your ideas all organized in one place, a journal, will also allow you to review your ideas at a later date. In order to invent something from start to finish, you will need to stay within your professional knowledge.2.

3.Once you’ve spent some time considering all possible options, choose your best idea for an invention.4.Draw a few sketches(草图)of what you imagine your invention will look like, and then consider some important questions. What could you add to improve this product? What about your invention is so special that people will bring it into their lives? Consider all aspects of your invention including all the required parts, and important details about how it works. Keep these answers and ideas in your journal so you can refer back to them.

Research your invention.5.You may search online for products that match the description of your invention. You may also visit stores that offer products similar to what yours will do, and even go as far as to ask store workers for items they might sell with a similar purpose. It might be a good idea to visit a Patent and Trademark Depository Library, where you can search all patents and categories for other inventions like yours.

A.Otherwise, you may have a great idea but no understanding of how to accomplish it

B.Now you’ll have to spend time considering the details of the project.

    C.Decide on an idea.

D.Thus make a list of possible problems that you may be having

E.It is better to have too many ideas than too few.

F.When you feel confident in your idea, research it to make sure it is truly unique.

    G.Bring your product into use

  • 22、People with low levels of vitamin D have significantly higher rates of actually every disease you can think of.

Heath experts think most of us don’t get enough of it. Vitamin D is produced by skin with the help of sunlight. It is difficult to obtain sufficient quantities just through diet. And today, 90% of us spend about 18 hours indoors every day. And even when we do go outside, we are armed with sunscreen to protect ourselves from harmful UV rays, which greatly decreases our natural production of vitamin D. That's why people are told to make up with vitamin pills.

The sun benefits us more than that. About ten years ago, Dr Richard Weller researched nitric oxide, a molecule (分子) produced in the body that lowers blood pressure. He discovered a previously unknown biological mechanism by which the skin uses sunshine to produce nitric oxide. It was already suspected that rates of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke are higher if you are farther from the sunny equator. So are they in the darker months. Then he put forward a theory: could exposing skin to sunlight lower blood pressure?

Sure enough, when he exposed volunteers to 30 minutes of summer sunlight without Sunscreen, their nitric oxide levels went up and their blood pressure went down. Wouldn’t all those rays raise rates of skin cancer? Yes, but skin cancer kills surprisingly fewer than three per 100,000 in the United States each year. For every person dying of skin cancer, about 80 die from diseases caused by high blood pressure.

【1】Why do most people lack vitamin D?

    A.We don’t take enough vitamin D pills.

B.We expose ourselves to little sunlight.

C.We consume little food containing it.

D.We don’t use sunscreen right in the sun.

【2】What do you know about nitric oxide?

A.It can bring nothing but harm to us.

B.It results from an abnormal biological reaction.

C.Its level is high among people near the equator.

D.Its level rises up during dark months.

【3】What can you learn from the last paragraph?

A.Exposing to the sunshine can lower nitric oxide levels.

B.Sunscreen doesn’t affect the level of nitric oxide.

C.100,000 people in the U. S die of skin cancer every year.

D.High blood pressure causes more deaths than skin cancer.

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

A.Sunshine matters a lot to our health.

    B.Vitamin D can’t go without suns hine.

C.Sunscreen protects us from skin cancer.

D.Heart illness is more deadly than skin cancer.

  • 23、   For years, people have wondered whether there's life on other planets. Scientists may now be closer than ever to answering that question.

Using powerful telescopes, a team of astronomers in South America discovered a new planet, called Proxima b. It circles a star named Proxima Centauri, in the same way Earth circles the sun. Proxima Centauri is the closest star to our solar system.

Scientists believe the new planet has a rocky surface and is similar in size to Earth. More important, they've determined that the distance between Proxima b and its “sun” gives the planet a similar temperature to Earth's.This means it could have liquid water. The presence of water on a planet makes it possible for life to exist there. Scientists refer to planets like Proxima b as “Goldilocks planets” because they are not too hot or too cold, but just right to possibly support life.

Astronomers have found other Goldilocks planets in the past, but none are as close to Earth as Proxima b. Still, the new planet is 4.2 light years from Earth—that is about 25 trillion miles away.

Despite the long distance, astronomers hope to get a much better look at our new-found neighbor one day. But they'll need to wait until more advanced telescopes are developed. They may also send a robotic spacecraft to investigate the planet.

1The writer introduces the new planet mainly by _____.

    A. making the comparisons B. listing figures

    C. following the space order D. giving examples

2Planets like Proxima b are referred to as “ Goldilocks planets” because of _____.

    A. the presence of water B. their temperature

    C. the life on them D. their size

3We can infer from the last paragraph that _____.

    A. the long distance will prevent astronomers from exploring the new planet

    B. existing telescopes are still far from advanced

    C. astronomers have a long way to go to explore the new planet

    D. astronomers have got the whole picture of the new planet

  • 24、Saving the giant panda from extinction isn't just good for the bears-it's good for the bottom line too,a new analysis by an international team of scientist shows.

The results, published in the journal Current Biology, highlight the economic benefits that they say go hand in hand with environmental conservation. In order to protect giant pandas, the government must protect their forests, which provide a host of often-under appreciated services to the communities that live in and around them. For example, forests allow for the growing of crops and the grazing(放牧)of animals, store clean fresh water and supply firewood, lumber(木材)and many useful plants. They manage storm runoff and help prevent erosion(侵蚀)。

The pandas themselves also hold enormous cultural value that has risen rapidly in recent decades among Chinese residents, the study also points out. "From 1980 to 2010,the cultural values of   pandas and their reserves almost doubled, largely driven by tourism use, rising 500-fold from 1980 to 2010, "they said.

Taking all of these factors into account, the scientists calculated a total economic value of Approximately $2. 6 billion in 2010 in China. Keep in mind, the costs of preserving panda habitat at current levels come to about$255 million. The study authors said that including the global cultural Value of the animals would increase the total economic value to $6. 9 billion per year-or about 27 times the cost of habitat preservation.

The researchers also noted that the investment in panda habitat has improved the living conditions   of local residents. They pointed to data from the Chinese Statistical Yearbook showing that the annual income in Sichuan, Shanxi and Gansu provinces, which sit next to panda reserves, rose by an average of 56%from 2000 to 2010. Farmers in counties within these provinces that were next to the panda reserves saw their annual incomes rise by 64%,on average.

The findings provide a promising example of how conservation efforts can pay off,and they could be applied to many other threatened and endangered species, the study authors said.

【1】What does the underlined words "bottom line"refer lo in the first paragraph?

    A.Moral standard.

    B.Economic profits.

    C.Overall development.

    D.Environmental conservation.

【2】Which is one of the results of preserving pandas?

    A.Less farmland.

    B.More foreign trade.

    C.More forest fires.

    D.Better farming conditions,

【3】In China, about how many times do economic values outweigh preserving cost?

    A.26.

    B.10.

    C.4.

    D.3.

【4】What's the main idea of the passage?

    A.Protecting pandas takes great efforts.
