二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   I became a magician by accident. When I was nine years old, I learned how to make a coin disappear. I read The Lord of the Rings and risked coming into the adult section of the library to search for a book of spells (魔法) — nine being that curious age at which you’re old enough to work through more than 1,200 pages of mysterious fantasy literature but young enough to still hold out hope that you might find a book of real, actual magic in the library. The book I found instead taught basic sleight-of-hand technique, and I devoted the next months to practice.

Initially, the magic wasn’t any good. At first it wasn’t even magic; it was just a trick-a bad trick. I spent hours each day in the bathroom running through the secret moves in front of the mirror. I dropped the coin over and over, a thousand times in a day, and after two weeks of this my mom got a carpet sample from the store and placed it under the mirror to eliminate the sound of the coin falling again and again.

I had heard my dad work through passages of new music on the piano, so I knew how to practice — slowly, deliberately, going for precision rather than speed. And then I tried the illusion (幻觉) in the mirror and an unbelievable scene took place. It did not look like a magic trick. It looked like a miracle. I knew that I had got what I wanted.

One day I made the performance on the playground. We had been playing football and were standing by the backstop in the field behind the school. A dozen people were watching. I showed the coin to everyone. Then it disappeared. The kids screamed. They yelled, laughed, scrambled away. Everyone went crazy. This was great.

1What did the author enter the adult section of the library to do?

A.Find a book of magic. B.Kill his time.

C.Read The Lord of the Rings. D.Learn knowledge of literature.

2What does the underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Deliver. B.Enlarge.

    C.Remove. D.Track.

3What contributed to the author’s success?

A.His mother s help. B.The secret of quick moves.

C.His hard practice over and over. D.The inspiration from his father

4How would the author feel about the outcome of his performance on the playground?

    A.It’s disappointing. B.It’s wonderful.

    C.It’s humorous. D.It’s unexpected.

  • 22、Talking plants might sound like characters in a fairy tale. But recent scientific studies have shown that plants communicate with each other and with other living things in a surprising number of ways. To understand them, scientists say, we just have to learn their language. Farmers are especially interested in what plants have to say.

“Plants are able to communicate with all sorts of organisms(有机体). They can communicate with giant bacteria, with other plants and with insects. They do this chemically, ”said Cahill, an Ecology Professor of the University of Alberta in Canada.

Plant scientists are just beginning to understand this chemical “language”. Cahill says studies have shown, for example, that plants can evaluate conditions in their immediate environment and take appropriate actions. Plants have an ability, for example, to signal pain or discomfort caused by anything from temperature extremes to an insect attack. Jack Schultz, a professor of chemical ecology at the University of Missouri, says when a plant senses that it’S being eaten, it cannot walk away from trouble;on the contrary, it will release a chemical vapor that alerts other plants nearby.

“Their language is a chemical language, and it involves chemicals that move through the air, which are easily to be changed, and most of all are smells that we are familiar with, Schultz explained.

“All plants responded to the attack by changing their chemistry to defend themselves, Schultz recalled. “But we were quite surprised to find that nearby plants also changed their chemistry to defend themselves, even though they were not part of the experiment.

Studies have also shown that plants under attack release pleasant chemicals. Those chemicals attract friendly insects that attack the pests eating the plant.

In the end, plants’ability to communicate their needsand our ability to understand themcould help farmers reduce the use of poisonous chemicals, cut operating costs and limit damage to the environment.

1The recent scientific studies have shown that plants can __________.

    A. communicate with other living things in a chemical way

    B. hardly react to any sudden change in temperature

    C. use a very special chemical language which is familiar to us

    D. respond to the attack by giving off poisonous chemicals

2When being eaten by a pest, the plant will ___________.

    A. walk away from trouble

    B. change its chemistry to kill the insect

    C. release a chemicaI vapor to “ask” other plants for help

    D. give off nice chemicals to attract friendly insects to a tack the pest

3The underlined word “alerts” most probably means “___________”.

    A. warns   B. protects

    C. threatens   D. allows

4Which would be the best title for the passage?

    A. Communication between Plants

    B. A Chemical “Language”

    C. Plants Can Talk

    D. How Plants Protect Themselves

  • 24、We all need confidence sometimes, especially when something goes wrong in our world. Here are some helpful tips on how to believe in yourself more.

【1】 Don’t listen to what others tell you unless it’s positive. When you know someone respects or likes you, be happy. You can also ask them what it is about you that they like. This will prove the best parts of you and help you believe in yourself. Some of us may find it more difficult to take in positive feedback(反馈) than negative one, and that needs to change.

Remember your last (or greatest) success, and think about it for a few minutes. Reviewing your past successes will help you reach for others. Quite simply, it reminds you that you have the talent and tools needed to get your life to the next level.【2】 Picture your greatest success so far, and then imagine the goal you are going for.

Know that you are the person your loved ones think you are. It goes for your dog, too. 【3】 You are expected to pull yourself up when you feel down. All that’s required is to feel the love that’s all around you. Start with one person (or your dog), and feel the difference.

If you have succeeded before, you can do it again. Maybe not in the same way, but you can reach the same level of influence and fulfillment. Nothing feels quite the same as being on stage and having several thousand people call your name, but other things can feel good too. 【4】

These guidelines in how to believe in yourself do work, but don’t try doing them all at once. 【5】 You will be pleased with the results and with yourself.

    A.Take in positive feedback.

B.Be happy towards what others tell you.

C.Go for what you want, no matter what it is.

D.Forming a picture in your mind also helps here.

E.When feeling down, it can be so easy to beat yourself up.

F.Concentrating on the love you get from others helps you feel good about yourself.

G.Start with the one that’s easiest for you and stick with it for a week or so before trying other exercises.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

The Negative Sides of Fast Food

With today's fast-paced lifestyle, it is very hard to keep up with the traditional way of taking care of all human needs. Eating habits are no exception. According to an article in a science magazine, Americans today have more fast food than ever before. Ninety-six out of every one hundred Americans eat fast food on a regular basis. There are many side effects related to this popular eating habit.

The food sold in most fast food restaurants may not be entirely good for us. In order to make food still taste fresh, a lot of chemicals have to be added. Besides, the main element that the fast-food market advertises and competes for is not good food or fresh ingredients, but the lowest price.

People who have the habit of eating fast food rarely even try to change their diet. Instead, people tend to get more and more used to the convenience and taste of fast food. According to a survey, out of every ten fast food eaters, only four will eat the same amount or less, and the other six will double their "loads" of fast food within four years; and out of every ten people who finally get to control their eating disorder, six will come back to eating fast food within six years. These alarming figures seem to be contrary to today's convenient ways of cooking at home. Easy-to-make dishes like those for microwaves, soups etc., would appear to be the solution to the fast food problem, but obviously the real problem is not the trouble of cooking at home, but the convenience of fast food.
