21、TeenJobFind, created by Palo Alto tech expert and mother Janet Shah, matches teens with local jobs, such as washing cars, tutoring or yard work. And like other ‘on demand’ services, TeenJobFind runs via mobile devices.
Shah was motivated to build TeenJobFind after facing the same problem as many other parents of teens: She wanted her children to learn the value of earning money, but couldn’t fit a regular work schedule into their busy lives. ‘‘When my three kids asked me for things, I found myself reminding them that when I was their age, I was babysitting and earning my own money, ” Shah said. ‘‘However, because of academics and extracurricular activities, my kids don’t have time for a traditional part-time job.”
Drawing on her experience at Apple, Yahoo and other tech companies, Shah thought through the elements of TeenJobFind carefully before launching the app. First on her list was security. As a mother, she did not want to send her children to a stranger’s house to do a job without knowing if the situation was safe.
That is why all potential job posters on TeenJobFind must agree to a background check through a third party. As emphasized in the site’s FAQ, ‘‘Our task at TeenJobFind is to create a safe marketplace. Our number one priority is to ensure the safety of those using our platform.”
Adults looking for help, called ‘owls’, download the app, submit (提交) their information for the security check, and begin posting jobs.
Teenagers interested in working—called ‘owlets’—also need to download the app. Through geolocation (地理定位), TeenJobFind shows both teens and job posters which jobs are available in their neighborhood, or ‘nest’.
When ‘owls’ need a job done, they post a ‘hoot (夜枭鸣叫声)’, which gets sent to nearby ‘owlets’, whether it is for occasional yard work, cleaning a garage, taking care of pets, helping out at a party or tutoring. The possibilities are endless. Teenagers can choose to complete the task if it works with their schedule and interest.
If you have ever hired a teen, you know that it is difficult to figure out how much to pay them. Fortunately, TeenJobFind takes the worry out of this situation by charging job posters $15 per hour for all tasks.
From this fee, teens get paid $12, which is transferred electronically through the app. Like most other gig economy (零工经济) apps, TeenJobFind uses the $3 per hour difference to cover operational costs and increase accessibility to these services.

22、Just picture William Shakespeare, the king of English literature (文学), sitting in front of a computer chatting with a "mouse potato” online. Perhaps both sides would think the other is using a strange new language.
Rome was not built in a day, and neither was English. And the Internet speeds up the development of language. The most recent evidence is that some new words have found their way into the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as standard English words.
“ Mouse potato”, like couch potato, has nothing to do with food. It refers to(指的是) people who play on their computers all day. The verb" google" comes from the popular Internet search engine. You can easily guess its meaning. And a "drama queen" is not really someone from a royal family or a stage play. It can refer to a person who often gives emotional performances or reactions.
Actually, the development of English has never stopped. In 1066, France came to Britain and then ruled it. That is why we find many French words in the English vocabulary like cafe, mutton and beef. After the American Revolution, English in colonial (殖民地) America began to separate itself from English across the Atlantic. Besides changes in intonation (语调), certain words fell out of favour and were replaced. For example," autumn" in Britain became "fall"in the United States. English has changed from a simple language with only 50,000 words into a great one with over 750, 000. This is partly because of globalization (全球化)。
Many languages have also helped the development of English. Words like Chinese “tofu” and Japanese “sushi” can also be found in English. Maybe you will create the next new English word. Who knows?
【1】The writer gave the example of Shakespeare to stress

B.the large number of English speakers
C.the great use of English
D.the difficulty in learning English
【2】Which of the following words can not refer to a person?

C.Drama queen.
D.Google
【3】Which of the following words doesn’t come from a foreign country?
A.Autumn
B.Mutton
C.Tofu
D.Sushi
【4】How many words were added to English during the course of its development?
A.50,000
B.750,000
C.800,000
D.700,000.
23、Metin Sitti at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart, Germany, and his colleagues have developed tiny robots called “microrollers” that can carry cancer drugs and selectively target human breast cancer cells. The team drew inspiration for the design of the robots from white blood cells in the human body, which can move along the walls of blood vessels (血管) against the direction of blood flow.
The microrollers are round and made from glass microparticles. One half of the robot was coated with a thin magnetic nanofilm (磁性纳米膜) made from nickel and gold. The other half was coated with the cancer drug doxorubicin as well as molecules that recognize cancer cells.
The team tested the robots using mouse blood and artificial channels lined with human endothelial cells—the kind of cells that line the inner walls of our blood vessels. The robots were exposed to a mixture of cancerous and healthy tissue. The microrollers selectively attached to the cancer cells and were activated using UV light to release the doxorubicin.
By applying magnetic fields, the team was able to control the movement of the microrollers, both with and against the flow of blood. The microrollers can reach a speed of up to 600 micrometers per second. “If you come to a spot where you need to take the right path and if you miss it, then you could go back and go to the right one,” says Setti.
In future, the researchers want to use other methods to start the drug release, such as heat or near-infrared light. They also plan to try making microrollers out of materials that would break down in the body over a few weeks or months.
The team hopes to test the microrollers in animals soon. “The rollers need to carry enough cancer drugs, which is why we need to have them in large numbers,” says Setti. “But since we can locally take drugs to the right target, we don’t need huge dosages (剂量).”
【1】What can the microrollers be used for?

A.Their direction can be adjusted.
B.They might miss the target cells.
C.They might get stuck in the blood.
D.Their speed can change automatically.
【4】What will the scientists probably do next?
A.Put the microrollers to clinical use.
B.Sell the microrollers in large quantities.
C.Tear the microrollers down in the body.
D.Experiment with the microrollers further.
24、Thirty-five years ago, with just one acre of land, a couple of seeds and a bucket of hope, one Nigerian-born scientist began his mission to defeat famine (饥荒) on his continent.
News of the drought across Africa in the early 1980s troubled Nzamujo. Equipped with a microbiology PhD and his faith, he travelled back to Africa. There, he found a continent ecologically rich, diverse and capable of producing food. He believes drought wasn’t the only reason for widespread hunger, and that sustainability had been left out.
Nzamujo began designing a “zero waste” agriculture system that would not only increase food security, but also help the environment and create jobs. In 1985, he started his sustainable farm “Songhai” in the West African country of Benin.
Nzamajo lives on the farm and constantly updates his techniques. He credits his degrees in science and engineering for Songhai’s success. But he also thanks his spiritual and cultural roots, and his father — a driving force in his life who encouraged him to pursue his studies to the highest degree and to use Songhai to share his knowledge.
Songhai has several “eco-literacy” development programs. They range from 18-month training courses for farmer-enterprisers, to shorter stays to learn techniques like weeding. People come from all over the world to study Nzamujo’s methods.
After seeing success on his first zero waste farm, he expanded throughout Benin and western Africa. Today, the Songhai model is applied across the continent, including Nigena. Uganda, Sierra Leone and Liberia, Nzamujo says they've trained more than 7.000 farmer-enterprisers and more than 30, 000 people in total since it began.
Nzamujo believes zero waste agriculture is now steadily tackling the issues he set out to defeat, hunger, unemployment and environmental declines. And he wants to see it go further.
