21、For the first time ever, more than half of all meals eaten out in the UK are from fast food restaurants. Burgers, fried chicken, pizzas, and takeout curry now account for 50.4% of meals bought outside the home. That’s up from 47.3% in 2008. And it represents a shocking 5.54 billion fast food meals a year.
But why? The answers are simple. For a start, many see fast food as a cheap option, which is a priority (优先考虑) for a lot of people in these times of economic hardship. And it seems that most people prefer familiar chains. “Families want to know what they are getting, and with the likes of McDonald’s and KFC they know it’s a consistent experience and good value,” an industry expert explained.
Many fast food chains are adapting their menus to appeal directly to middleclass families. McDonald’s, for example, has started using free-range eggs and organic milk, together with fruit and vegetables for children’s Happy Meals. And most chains are offering good discounts to attract customers. In London, for example, more than 25% of fast food purchases are made with a promotional voucher (促销券).
But is fast food really such good value for money? Not according to some. “Actually, healthy ingredients are cheaper… and offer better value for money,” a food expert explained. “On the face of it, it may seem like the cheapest option, but when you look at the labels, you’ll find that you’re only getting 50% of meat in your chicken nuggets, for example.”
So, what’s the solution? An online survey on food has a number of suggestions.
“If you want to eat well and cheaply, simply buy lots of basic ingredients, then cook in large amounts. Afterwards, you can freeze any leftover food and eat it later,” says Molly Bates of Birmingham.
“Beans, lentils and pulses are all excellent forms of protein and a lot cheaper than meat and fish. They’re also very tasty,” says Kylie Jones of Brighton.

22、Some people are so rude. Who sends an e-mail or a text message that just says “Thank you”? Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you? 【1】 Don’t these people realize that they’re wasting your time?
Maybe I’m the rude one for not appreciating life’s little courtesies (礼节). But many social norms (规范) just don’t make sense to people drowning in digital communication.
Take the thank-you note. Daniel Post Senning, a coauthor of Emily Post’s Etiquette, asked, “At what point does showing appreciation outweigh the cost?”
【2】 Think of how long it takes to listen to one of those messages. In texts, you don’t have to declare who you are or even say hello. E-mail, too, is slower than a text. The worst are those who leave a voice mail and then send an e-mail message to tell you they left a voice mail.
This isn’t the first time technology has changed our manners. 【3】 Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor, suggested that people say, “Ahoy!” Finally, hello won out, and the victory sped up the greeting’s use in face-to-face communications.
In the age of the smart phone, there is no reason to ask once-acceptable questions about: the weather forecast, a business’s phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, or an office, which can be easily found on a digital map. But people still ask these things. 【4】
How to handle these differing standards? Easy: Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thank-you message. 【5】 In traditional societies, the young learn from the old. But in modern societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here’s hoping that politeness never goes out of fashion but that time-wasting forms of communication do.
A.Then there is voice mail.
B.Others, like me, want no reply.
C.Who asks for a fact easily found on the Internet?
D.Won’t new technology bring about changes in our daily life?
E.And when you answer, they respond with a thank-you e-mail.
F.Face-to-face communication makes comprehension much easier.
G.When the telephone was invented, people didn’t know how to greet a caller.
23、For the most part, you are probably only exposed to the music that is played on your favorite radio stations, TV shows, and music websites, or the music that your friends and family members enjoy. While you probably know a lot about your favorite type of music, it can be a rewarding experience to enlarge your horizons( 眼界 )if you are trying to discover artists and types of music that you’re not familiar with.
