二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A study of more than five million books, both fiction and non-fiction, has found a marked decline in the use of emotional words over time. The researchers form the University of Bristol used Google Ngram Viewer, an online database for finding the frequency of terms in scanned books, to look for more than 600 particular words identified as representing anger, dislike, fear, joy, sadness and surprise.

They found that almost all of the categories showed a drop in these “mood words” over time. Only in the category of fear was there an increase in usage.

“It is a steady and continuous decline,” said Dr Alberto Acerbi. He assumed that the result might be explained by a change in the position occupied by literature, in a crowded media landscape. “One thing could be that in parallel to books the 20th century saw the start of other media. Maybe these media—movies, radio, drama—had more emotional content than books.”

Although both joy and sadness followed the general downwards trend, the research, published in the journal PLOS One, found that they also exhibited another interesting behavior: the ratio (比率) between the two varied greatly, apparently mirroring historical events. During the Roaring Twenties the joy-to-sadness ratio reached its highest point that would not occur again until before the recent financial crash. Then, in 1941, the ratio plunged at the height of World War II.

Nevertheless, the researchers held a reserved opinion about their claim that their result reflected wider social trends. In the paper, they even argue that the opposite could be true. “It has been suggested, for example, that it was the suppression (压抑) of desire in ordinary Elizabethan English life that increased demand for writing ‘filled with romance’… perhaps,” they conclude, “songs and books may not reflect the real population any more than catwalk models reflect the average body.”

1The study was carried out by way of_________.

A.scanning the books with an online scanner B.counting the number of words in the books

C.searching digitized texts for emotional words D.analyzing different topics of the books

2Which of the following is one of the research findings?

A.Usage decreased in all the categories of mood words.

B.Usage of most mood words kept falling over time.

C.The decline was caused by the rise of other media.

D.The unfavorable position of literature led to the decline.

3What does the underlined word “plunged” probably mean?

    A.increased B.changed C.dropped D.twisted

    4The researchers suspect that _______________.

A.their research result reflected wider social trends.

B.their research result was the contrary of social trends.

C.there was a suppression of desire in Elizabethan English life.

D.catwalk models reflect the population better than songs and books.

  • 22、If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in spring than you are at any other time of the year. A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington, concluded from other men’s work and his own among people in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities.

He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in the summer.

Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking; one reason may be that in the spring man’s mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.

Fall is the next best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking.

【1】According to the passage, the mental abilities of most people________.

A.are different from season to season

B.are the same in all seasons

C.tend to be the lowest in winter

D.tend to be the lowest in fall

【2】What effect do climate and temperature have according to Ellsworth Huntington’s conclusion?

A.A great effect on everyone’s intelligence.

B.Some effect on most people’s intelligence.

    C.Effect on only a few people’s intelligence.

    D.No effect on people’s intelligence.

【3】Which of the following is NOT true?

A.Cool weather is good for thinking.

B.Winter is the second best season for thinking.

C.Summer is a good time to take a long vacation from thinking.

D.Nature’s changes may affect our mental abilities.

【4】When should a vacation be taken from thinking according to the passage?

    A.During spring and fall.

    B.During winter.

    C.During summer.

    D.During summer and winter.

  • 23、Earlier this year, the social media website Facebook announced that it would work with several news organizations — including The New York Times, The Guardian, and the BBC — to place news stories directly into users’ personal Facebook webpage.  Stories published using Facebook Instant will load more quickly and keep the style of the original publisher, who will keep all the advertising income the stories earn — at least for now. The deal shows how important social media has become to news organizations, and is a clear sign of how the world of news is changing — and has been for a while.

When Google News began in 2002, many saw it as the death of the newspaper. It had no human editor. Instead Google used, and still uses, a secret computer program that selects and displays news stories according to the reader’s personal interests. More recently, Associated Press and Yahoo! have been publishing computer-written articles. Both use special software to automatically produce stories about company financial results and sports reports — areas where the quality of writing is felt to be of secondary importance to the accuracy of the data.

Should we be worried about such developments? I think we should. One concern is that facebook, Google and other social media websites see journalism as a sideline, a way of putting people in front of advertisements. It isn’t their primary function — so if it stops making them lots of money, they're likely to stop doing it.

There’s also a concern that computer-written articles are not actually journalism at all, because what a human news team produces is actually quite complex. A well-written news story puts information in context, offers a voice to each side of an argument and brings the public new knowledge.

Though economics and speed of delivery mean readers will probably choose a computer-written story over a carefully shaped article — at least for daily news — I don't think the computers will be writing any in-depth articles for a while yet.

1What is the main purpose of the article?

    A. To report on a new computer service offered by Facebook..

    B. To advise readers against reading computer-written news.

    C. To express concern about recent trends in online news.

    D. To describe the process of online news reporting.

2Computer-written news reports have so far focused on sports and finance because ________.

    A. these are the most popular topics for online readers

    B. there are fewer journalists specializing in these areas

    C. information on these topics is more easily available

    D. writing style is less important than accuracy in these areas

3What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A. Journalism.   B. Advertising.

    C. Facebook.   D. Business.

4In Paragraph 4, which of the following is mentioned as a characteristic of a well-written news article?

    A. The information presented is up-to-date.

    B. The author's opinion is clear.

    C. Different views on the topic are presented.

    D. The language used is vivid.
