  • 21、My husband was killed on September 11, 2001; he worked in WTC, well above the impact floors. On his birthday in March, 2002, I went to the site that used to be the WTC. It wasn't cleaned up yet; in fact it was ugly as hell and smelled about the same, and access was still pretty chaotic. I got to the Century 21 department store across the street, and stood against the wall. I broke down.

A guy who was working across the street at the site which was still a full-on disaster area—saw me and came across. "Who did you lose?" he asked. "My husband," I said, through ugly tears, and I told the guy what firm my husband had worked for, and that it was his birthday.

They guy turned out to be a firefighter. He reached into his front pocket. "This is actually really rare. Not a lot of glass survived; it just vaporized." And he pressed it into my hand.

He sensed my doubt and said, "Maybe it is for nothing. But crying all the day could be for something?"

I still have it. It's not that the guy was giving up a valuable souvenir. It was that he was acknowledging my connection to that little piece of glass, and putting it where he thought it belonged—that, and he needed to give me something that in some small way I could hold onto and focus on, instead of the hurt. This was how he could do that in that one moment.

I was so bound up in my own head that I never even asked his name; he didn't ask mine either. If he's out there now, I want to tell him that the little piece of glass made me start to think that maybe there were things, little things, short moments, small pieces, that last no matter what.

I want to say to him: thanks for that.

【1】Why did she go to the site?

A.She decided to do some shopping.

B.She missed her husband very much.

C.She intended to meet the firefighter.

【2】The firefighter gave her a piece of glass to ________.

    A.honor her husband

    B.lift her spirits

    C.persuade her to leave

    D.remove her doubt

【3】What was her attitude to the firefighter?

    A.Appreciative.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Disapproving.

    D.Reserved.

  • 23、   You might have heard about identity theft: it’s what can happen when a thief gets enough of someone’s information to commit fraud (诈骗). Why should people care about it? Because recovering a stolen identity can be a time- consuming and expensive process. Imagine that someone pretends to be you: they use your name; they even convince businesses that they’re you and they open a credit card in your name, get a cell phone in your name, or buy things using a credit card that has your name on it.

ID thieves can be creative about getting your information. There are some low-tech ways they get it: sometimes they steal garbage, going through it to find personal information, or they steal mail.

There are high-tech ways, too: ID thieves might put software onto your computer without you knowing it — it can happen when you open an email attachment, click on a pop-up(弹出窗口)advertisement, or download some music files. Some software lets a thief see everything on your computer, and record everything you type on your computer.

Unfortunately, even if you’re really careful with your personal information, thieves can still get it. Sometimes, they hack(入侵)into computer systems at stores or schools, hospitals or businesses. They look for personal information to use or sell to other thieves.

It’s pretty easy for you and your family to make it harder for a thief to steal your identity. You can start with the low-tech defenses: being careful with your mail and garbage. Tear anything that has personal information on it before you throw it away. And be sure to take care with your purse, your wallet, or your backpack.

Practice some routine higher-tech defensive plays, too: protect your computer by installing (安装 ) and turning on an up-to-date firewall along with anti-spyware and anti-virus software. Once you are online, be careful you’re your personal information. Some sites might ask for a credit card number, stop and check if they really need that number. When you get email or pop-ups on your computer, don’t respond automatically. Emails that ask you to reply or click a link could be thieves trying to trick you into giving them your personal information. It’s a technique called “phishing”, because the thieves are fishing for your information. Stop and think before you click.

1The purpose of the first paragraph is to tell readers that ______.

    A. people worry about identity theft

    B. it is important to avoid identity theft

    C. it is too difficult to recover a stolen identity

    D. thieves manage to obtain personal information

2The underlined word “plays” in Paragraph 6 probably means  ______.

    A. tasks B. games

    C. exercises D. measures

3Which of the following is an effective way of preventing identity theft?

    A. Take the Social Security card with you.

    B. Click on a link only after considering whether it’s safe.

    C. Enter your credit card number on personal computers only.

    D. Throw anything with your personal information in the garbage.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a warm summer morning. I had just finished reading the grocery specials in the paper. I didn’t really need anything for the next few days. Nothing stuck out as a particularly good deal except the bonus chicken packs.

Five minutes later I headed to the store on my bike: helmet on my head, old pack on my back, and five bucks in my pocket. The temperature seemed to have gone up a little. I locked up my bike and went in. I headed straight back to the meat counter. I grabbed a package weighing slightly over ten pounds, and then headed for the checkout.

“Paper or plastic,” the clerk asked. She gave me a whole lot of change for so much meat and slipped the family pack into a sack, with most of it sticking out the top.

I headed outside, pleased with my purchase and with visions of fried chicken and chicken and rice in my head. Reality set in when the air hit my face. Not warm air, but really hot air. I realized I didn’t have the car, so the chicken would be riding on my back.

Actually, the partially frozen chicken felt cold against my back. In my head I began to count the number of stop signs left before I got home. The signal light turned yellow so I stopped.

For a moment at the signal, it was quiet. Then I heard a woman start screaming. The light turned green but the cars didn’t move. Maybe there had been an accident? I looked behind me even though I never heard any cars’ crunch.

What I saw was a small herd of people coming up the road towards me. There was a man in a suit, a woman with a beach towel, and a few others. I heard someone yell, ‘I’m a nurse. " I looked around again and still, no visible accident. Moving faster, this herd of folks started talking loudly in my direction.

“Were you in an accident” Are you alright?” Who are they talking to, I wondered?

I had no idea what was wrong. I was puzzled!

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

“Look, you are bleeding! Why don’t you get off your bike and take off your backpack?”
