二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   As a boy, I wanted to go to the South Pole. As a teenager, I decided I'd like to go to the North Pole too. And yet, I haven't done either. It had taken me 31 years to just make it to the Arctic.

I was traveling with a film crew from Northern Ireland, following the footsteps of Lord Dufferin who, in the 1850s, sailed from Scotland to the Arctic. As an early adventure tourist, he was driven by the desire to see what lay at the ends of the world.

As we sailed north, icebergs of the size of buses floated past our small boat. Finally, we reached our destination—English Bay, where Dufferin landed- and stepped off onto the horseshoe-shaped beach.

This was what I'd dreamt of: standing somewhere so pure and primitive. However, for many early polar explorers, the results were far less pleasant. The south, in particular, was source of extreme danger.

My childhood interest in the South Pole was fueled by the unsuccessful yet heroic adventures of Emest Shackleton. He died in 1922 while preparing for his fourth adventure. The stories of Robert Falcon Scott are also well-known: he and four companions died on their way back from the South Pole.

So why do explorers put themselves at such risk?

Much of it seems to lie in the purity of the challenge. Scott talked of the appeal of a place that had been “unreached and unseen by humans.” “With a view over shining lands covered by ice-sheets of inconceivable extent, you have the feeling of living over the control of death,” said Fridtjof Nansen, a Norwegian explorer.

On the homeward journey the weather turned and we were left for a few days at the mercy of a storm. We experienced a small taste of helplessness when faced with the raw power of nature. We should be grateful for the great explorers’ spirit and stories. I know I am.

【1】Why did the author begin his adventure tour?

    A.To assist a film crew

    B.To realize a childhood dream

    C.To memorize Lord Dufferin

    D.To challenge a world record

【2】Which of the following best explains "inconceivable" underlined in paragraph 7?

    A.Hard to control

    B.Too far to reach

    C.Hard to imagine

    D.Too bright to view

【3】What happened during the writer's journey?

    A.They were trapped in icebergs

B.They were kept off the destination

C.They were attacked by a storm

    D.They were rescued by explorers

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.The Appeal of the Ends of the World

B.The Dream of Traveling to the Arctic

C.The Victory over the Control of Death

D.The Gratitude to Great Explorers Spirit

  • 22、Across the United States, universities and colleges have been looking to become more sustainable (可持续发展的) and more than 600 schools have already planned to become eco-friendly. The EcoDorm, home to 36 students at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, was designed to be sustainable from top to bottom, or in this case, from its rainwater-collection system to its garden. The dormitory is bringing new meaning to the concept of living “green” at college.

At Warren Wilson College, a biological science school with fewer than 1,000 students, the sustainability drive came from the student body. The EcoDorm concept was presented ten years ago by two students; a planning committee firstly suggested using building materials like corncob. Although the architects disagreed with the idea, they came up with other creative solutions: Wood siding was taken from the trees grown in the school yard that were suffering from a disease, and rainwater was collected in an old railway car and pumped back into the house to clean the toilets.

All in all, the dorm uses nearly two-thirds less electricity than a similar-sized traditional building would. But even the most sustainable homes need continued efforts from its livers. And in the case of EcoDorm, students live by their words. Most also take advantage of the dorm’s bio-garden, planting and harvesting fruits and vegetables. “I didn’t have to worry about paper towels being wasted or feel bad about drying my clothes outside,” Jeremy Lekich, the dorm’s gardener, said. “Basically, it has made my life easier.”

【1】 We can learn from the text that the EcoDorm in the US   .

    A. offers students the chances to have a natural living at college

    B. was firstly built by two college students

    C. was designed for saving building materials

    D. is only applicable in few schools

【2】 The second paragraph is mainly about   .

    A. where the EcoDorm was built

    B. when the EcoDorm got its name

    C. what the EcoDorm is made of

    D. how the concept of EcoDorm started

【3】 What can be inferred from the text?

    A. A long-term development calls for students’ efforts.

    B. Students’ ideas should be encouraged at college.

    C. Green living is a new trend at American colleges.

    D. Students can learn to protect the environment through practice.

  • 23、With all of the technology we have at our fingertips, network crime would be at an all-time high. Identity thieves will do whatever they can to get their hands on your personal information, including your bank account, mail or email, credit card and anything they want to know. Many victims of identity theft don’t know they are victims. 【1】

You start getting bills for unfamiliar expenses

Don’t ignore any unusual bills that appear in your mailbox. It might not be simply junk mail. Bills for overdue (逾期) payments could mean trouble with identity fraud (欺诈). In this case, you should call the police right away. 【2】 But it puts you on record as having reported the identity theft and can help in repairing your credit.

You stop receiving your mail or emails

【3】 Not receiving mail or emails related to expenses is a red flag too. This is especially true for items that you receive on a regular basis, like bank statements and bills. An identity thief only needs your name and address to reroute your mail and intercept (拦截) sensitive documents, so make sure to follow up with creditors if your bills don’t arrive on time. This is a reason to destroy documents that have your personal information on them.

    【4】

You don’t have to lose your wallet for thieves to steal your credit card information. If you enter your credit card number while on public Wi-Fi, hackers can gain access to your information and copy your credit card to consume. 【5】 Then get new credit card numbers as soon as possible. These are the times you should never use a credit card.

A.They probably will not catch the criminal.

B.You start receiving mail for a different name.

C.You notice unexplained charges on your credit card.

D.Receiving strange bills is not the only dangerous sign.

E.You receive statements for credit cards you don’t have.

F.However, some signs can remind you that you’re one of them.

G.Contact your bank to report the fraud and have the charges removed.

  • 24、Living through a pandemic (全球流行病) is tiring, but with fewer activities and events happening all year, you’d think it would be a perfect excuse to start putting sleep first. 【1】 So why do you find yourself putting off your bedtime?

This refusal to shut your eyes when you know you should is an actual psychological phenomenon called “revenge bedtime procrastination (报复性睡前拖延症)”. 【2】 As the boundaries between work and home life become less clear right now, revenge bedtime procrastination seems like a way to take back part of your day for low-demand activities, like mindlessly watching Instagram stories or videos on Netflix.

We live in this instant satisfaction culture, Abhinav Singh, a sleep physician from Indiana, says and you expect to fall asleep the second your head hits the pillow. But sleep is a process. 【3】 “I have a four-step routine: shower, journal, read, breathe,” says Dr. Singh. Creating a similar routine for yourself “gives you time to wind down and start to slow your brain down a bit”, he adds.

【4】 Reserve your bed for sleep only, making it a sacred place your brain immediately associates with rest. The more time you spend in bed awake, the less likely you’ll be able to fall asleep when you want to.

Even the awareness of what you’re doing—and how harmful it can be long-term—can help. 【5】

    A.But that’s not the case.

B.Your sleep environment is also important.

C.Putting off our bedtime isn’t as harmless as it sounds.

D.The pillow and sheet are important for you to fall asleep.

E.So instead of resisting your bedtime, prepare for it ahead.

F.The more you know about sleep, the more important you will treat it.

G.People suffering it refuse to sleep early to regain some sense of freedom.

三、完形填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 25、A recent survey in the United States showed that the average family spent more money on its pets than on its children. Although rather shocking, it should not __________ anyone who has seen the doggy parlors(客厅) where loved pets rest. Are Americans unique in treating their little friends in this way? No, the English, too, are __________ to their pets.

This can clearly be seen when we look at pet foods, which often contain more vitamins than human food or, at least, are __________ less nutritious. They certainly cost much. Last year the British public spent two hundred million pounds on pet food alone, __________ veterinary(兽医的) bills or animal furniture. It is difficult not to feel __________ with this when one considers what the same amount could do for victims of starvation and poverty, so it is __________ for me to get hot under the collar when I read an old man left all his money to his dog home.

There are a variety of reasons why I find the popularity of British pets __________. They cause physical problems. An example of this is New York where they have great difficulty getting rid of the mess that dogs leave on the streets. Many people find this funny, but in a number of large cities it is a major problem. Animals can cause disease, too. It is the threat of rabies --- a disease with no known cure --- that has made the English government impose strict __________ on animals coming into the United Kingdom. When the Spanish government recently __________ a number of homeless dogs as protection against the same threat, English tourist immediately wrote letters to the newspapers __________ about mass murder.

Another problem is the __________ of pet owners. Most little children want a dog or a cat, and they continually pester their mothers and fathers until they get one. It is only when the sweet little thing has been brought home that the parents realize how much time and money must be spent on "Rover" or "Bonzo". Then they just __________ it. This brings me to my last point. Pets, which run free, are often not __________ at all. English farmers lose hundreds of sheep a year, killed by someone's pet and you must have read of children being hurt by some pets of their own.

__________, I would only suggest that we have got our __________ wrong and that something should be done about it.
